Computing Devices Canada (CDC), Nepean, Ontario, a General Dynamics Company, has been certified to Software Engineering Institute (SEI) capability and maturity model (CMM) level 3, by a team of independent auditors. This is a significant achievement for the company and provides assurance to its customers that software engineering is being carried out at CDC in an organised, well-defined, repeatable and well-understood fashion.

A major ingredient in the achievement of this success has been an Intranet-Web-based document tailoring utility (DTU), written in Visual Prolog and running on an OS/2 Domino Go Web Server. The utility provides CDC's software engineers with instant access to the company's process documents and policies, and allows them to tailor and generate MIL-STD 498 style documents in a small fraction of the time previously required. It allows them to see examples of existing document sections as well as generic document text for each section. Users can edit the content of the sections, plus "tailor" sections in or out, all while on-line. Once satisfied, they can generate the complete document with keywords customised to their current project.

The CGI programs that drive the server side of the DTU are written in Visual Prolog for OS/2 which provides the development productivity and run-time performance the project demanded.

The Domino Go Web Server on OS/2 easily handles the processing load of the DTU, dispatching the CGI processes rapidly enough to allow rapid interactive expansion and collapsing of document sections by end-users. This activity is a key indicator of response, since it can only be fully handled on the server side (the state of the expanded or collapsed view persists between user sessions).

For more details on the DTU and CDC's SEI level 3 CMM certification, contact:

QuickFix is another of those tools for applying OS/2 fixpacks without obliging you to make a bunch of floppy disks. It differs from other utilities of the genre in that it uses a diskette image extractor which does a CRC verification before applying what could otherwise be junk from a bad download to your perfectly-tuned and functional OS/2 system.

QuickFix is not specific to any particular fixpack.

Improvements over version 1.0 include:

  1. Some sanity checks on directory names.
  2. Now works with OS/2 3.0 as well as 4.0.
  3. Handles all known variants of the fixtools distribution file name (fixt*.exe, cs*.exe, cs*.dsk)
  4. Much simpler user interface. Default values are now presented in editable input fields. Explanations are generally shorter.
  5. Re-use of the archive directory is now allowed (with appropriate warnings).
  6. Detects artifacts from prior fixpack application and (with user approval) can clean up by doing a fake "commit".

NICE/2 v0.04 is out!

Have you ever started a long XCOPY command that ate too much CPU? Have you ever wanted to make Netscape/2 more responsive? NICE/2 is here to rescue. With NICE/2 you can dynamically change priority of many processes in OS/2. As opposed to programs such as SPE that starts a process in a given priority, NICE/2 enables you to change the priority of processes and threads AFTER they have been started.

Highlights of this version:

NICE/2 is available at the NICE/2 homepage:

I just called Lotus (US) and ordered it. 1-800-343-5414, but as with anything to do with Lotus and OS/2, they at first didn't know it existed, then told me it has been out for a while but didn't know how long. She said they only had 16 copies in stock (15 now :-) I verified that this was the update for Lotus Smart Suite for OS/2 Warp 4. Who knows if that is what they send me.

Price was as listed by Walter, $20 for the CD, $5 S/H and $1.20 tax for PA residents.

White Bear Lake, Minnesota -- December 15, 1998

Keller Group, developer of the PMfax and FaxWorks OS/2 products, now has a special LAN version which supports Windows, NT and OS/2 workstations for small SOHO LAN situations. This provides LAN fax sharing at a very attractive price of just $299.

The new product allows "shared mode" use of the fax hardware by up to five other workstations, and the workstations can be any mixture of Windows, NT or OS/2 machines. The fax server can be any OS/2 machine on the LAN. This is ideal for SOHO configurations where privacy, routing and other advanced features of the regular PMfax LAN products are not needed.

"We continue to support the use of OS/2 by the home and small office user," says Mark Ahlstrom, President of Keller Group. "Many customers are now using Windows and NT machines in addition to their OS/2 machines, and this new product provides a cost-effective faxing solution for their office."

All PMfax products are now available for electronic ordering and delivery through the Keller Group web site at http://www.kellergroup.com.

We have released a new version of the CandyBarZ utility! We have had to scale back support for image formats other than bitmaps because of a bug in the MMPM system in OS/2 (multimedia). We have reported the bug to IBM, but they want us to pay to have it fixed. This isn't really feasible for a freeware project, so...

Future plans include a new themes system, that will allow people to put together themes and share them with others! You can find the new beta at the OS/2 Netlabs on the CandybarZ page.
http://www.netlabs.org/candybarz

It should be available at hobbes soon!
Happy Holidays!

The German publisher C.E. Fischer is looking for programmers who can program in OS/2. They are currently on a new GUI for OS/2, which shall integrate a number of applications. They are also looking for people who can develop drivers. If anyone is interested, please contact CEFischer@t-online.de.

For some tasks German knowledge is probably required, but i guess for many parts it is not essential. You can certainly contact them in English. If you want to have a look at their web-page (in German): http://www.cefischer.de/.

The Larsen Commander program has reached its fourth public release, which is version 0.94. Point your browser to:
http://home.sol.no/~leilarse/lcmd/index.html

if you are interested in taking a look or download it.

Some facts about Larsen Commander

Larsen Commander is a 32-Bit OS/2 Presentation Manager based File Manager with built in command line and scrollable console monitor. It has a default look and feel that is designed with inspiration from the grand old Norton Commander for DOS and the great File Commander for OS/2.

Changes since the previous public release

Add: New section "[NoneConsoleProgs]" in LCMD.INI contains a list which programs should always be launched in a new session. See LCMD.TXT for more info.

Add: Use SHIFT+F7 to goto the previous directory of the current file panel. This feature makes it very snappy to jump between two "working" directories.

Imp: The standard message box of LCMD now shows the message text in a multiline text entry field with a vertical scroll bar so that all the text can be seen (by scrolling it) in case it is too long.

Imp: Rewrote some parts of the program launcher code. Larsen Commander is now, at least in theory, ready to support launching and management of more than one child process at once. I will, however, limit the number of active children to only one until further notice. This is mostly due to the extra risks for serious unknown bugs as a consequence of the relative complex code.

Imp: System command interpreter no longer assumed to be CMD.EXE. Is now fetched from the COMSPEC environment variable as it should.

Imp: The "Choose Drive" dialog is now much more snappy to pop up after the first time it has been used.

Chg: Now compiled for the 80386 processor rather than for 80486. This has no practical effects to the speed of Larsen Commander at all, but it caused the size of the EXE-file to be reduced by about 10 KBytes before compression.

Chg: The ALT key must now be released before 250ms after it was pressed to get the menu bar activated by keyboard. This used to be 500ms until now.

Chg: Some cosmetic changes on the size of the three dialogs: Command History, Directory History and Directory Cache.

Chg: Changed the icon on the MOVE button of the toolbar. I think this new one is a bit more intuitive. The old one looked like an icon for creating a shaddow object.

Fix: Enlarged the stack of the filename reader thread of the file panels to prevent a "stack overflow" that sometimes did occur upon startup on some systems.

Fix: In some very rare situations the toolbar buttons did execute their respective command when mouse button was released even if the button was initially pressed on some other window than the Larsen Commander window.

Fix: The "Free Drive Space" item in the INFO panel was almost never updated within a Larsen Commander session. Now updates upon every directory reread.

Fix: Did not react when user tried to adjust the height of the file panels by dragging the bottom frame of the panels in full "screen" mode.

Fix: Sometimes crashed due to insufficient stack space when showing an error message during a copy or move progress.

Fix: When move or copy only the current selected file or directory then the selection annoyingly changed to the file just obove the originally selected.

Fix: Finally fixed the serious bug that Larsen Commander did not prevent the user from trying to copy or move a parent directory into it self or any of its descendant subdirectories.

Fix: Some of the columns in the FULL mode sometimes was calculated to be to narrow.

Fix: Some PM programs was unable to start from the command line, including the Larsen Commander executable it self.

Fix: Could not view (F3) or edit (F4) a file while a child program was being run from the command line, until the child program terminated.

Fix: If a program was launched by pressing enter on a program file object in a file panel when a child program was still executing in the command line, then the command line did not restore back to its normal color when the child program finished.

Fix: Tab characters was not expanded in the console monitor.

Fix: Text "Flat Toolbar Buttons" in options dialog View->Style was cut on some screens.

Fix: If the console minitor contained any selected text then the selection was annoyingly extended whenever any new text was appended to it.

Fix: Only the first mouse click was handled by the toolbar buttons if mouse was not moved between two or more clicks.

Fix: Removed som painting bugs from the toolbar window.

Fix: Failed to edit (F4) or view (F3) files that was contained in a directory which name contained one or more spaces.

Fix: "Calculate Dir Size" sometimes did never say "Finished!" if multiple file and directories was tagged.

Fix: The exception dump in the console munitor that alwas occured the first time an external program was run from the command line, is now removed.

Fix: Sometimes crashed when selecting "Previous Command" from popup menu of command line.

XFolder V0.83 beta is out. I did not announce the previous V0.8x versions on WarpCast (at least I didn't announce them myself) because quite serious problems occured on many systems. V0.82 proved to be stable though, and V0.83 beta now contains a number of minor bugfixes to that version.

So if you'd like to get rid of V0.71 that's still running on your system or if you were disappointed with previous versions, this one might be for you.

Please note though that people reported compatibility problems with ObjectDesktop V2.0. You might need to deregister the Enhanced Folder feature in that software to get XFolder to work.

This is still a beta, even though it's fairly stable. Please read "bugs.txt" on my homepage for details.

Long awaited for, the MySQL 3.21.33b binaries for OS/2 are being uploaded to Hobbes (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/) - and next I'll be uploading it to the MySQL guys at TCX (http://www.tcx.se/).

UDFs support is compiled in but largely untested. An install script is not yet done... unless you have some unix-like shell installed. Otherwise read the INSTALL.OS2 provided by Rocco Caputo (thanks!). Brush it up with infomation from the mysql.inf document.

This build of MySQL for OS/2 is a lot more stable - it is recommended that people trying out the older build upgrade to this build.

Interesting files:

mysql2-3.21.33b-bin.zip
This file has the already compiled server and client tools. Also included are the C headers and libraries for both multi and single threaded compiles. Plus, my own Pascal sources for Virtual Pascal - these compile for both OS/2 and Win32 platforms (and may work with other 32bit Pascal compilers) and include a nice Class interface for those who are fans of OO programming.

mysql2-3.21.33b-src.zip
This is big - it's a copy of my source tree complete with makefiles. Also included is the texi2ipf perl script to aid creating the OS/2 Info Viewer (INF) files and all of the latest OS/2 specific fixes are in. Diff files will be available soon (email me if you really want it).

pthreads004.zip
The latest version of my POSIX thread library for OS/2. This is required for compiling with UDF support. Otherwise, pthreads003.zip is sufficient for compiling mysql2-3.21.33b. If you already have an earlier version of pthreads installed, delete the pthreads.a file from your /emx/lib directory.

This is my last word on 3.21.x (except if any major bugs are found)

I shall now be working only on 3.22.x and applying fixes to that...

Sidenote:
I shall be going on holiday next week - so any further updates are unlikely until 1999.

Have a grrreat Christmas, everyone...

Yup, yet another update for ThermoProtect :)

Now ThermoProtect V1.08 is available on http://hobbes.mnsu.edu/pub/incoming/tp-108.zip

and later it will be moved to http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/mboard/tp-108.zip

Freeware now and forever! :)

Changes inculdes:

*Added a small delay after initialization of the chipset, this should prevent some abnormal readings in the fan's highest/lowest reading.

(below are for V1.07)

*Sometimes the program will mistaken a W83781D as a LM78, thus it was not able to read the extra two thermal input, this problem is now fixed. Users of V1.06 are encouraged to use their current version if ThermoProtect detects their chip properly, since this update does not inculde much in the way of features.

*A few more optimized routines, or rather, the removal of some garbage in my library code... :)

Error/Bug Reports:

If this program is giving you a Vendor ID but saying that it can't identify the chip... please do the following...

*MAKE SURE you do have a environmental monitoring chip of some kind.
*Check if the output from ThermoProtect is making sense or not (ie +5V entry showing +8V is NOT making sense... :) )
*Check your motherboard manual and record down the model and the make of the monitoring chip.
*Record down the Vendor ID.
*E-Mail me the data... :)

Hi there,

I Just downloaded the Macromedia Shockwave Flash file format reference and the Comm/2 SDK And realized that it can't be that difficult to port the plugin.

Now I'm looking for a few developers with some spare time to help me with the port.

Since the SDK is VA C++ v3.0 ready this seems the platform of choice. I'm looking for people with experience in:

-Audio/Graphic compression and decoding
-Gpi experience

I Will make a web page available as soon as this project starts.

Also if there are already people taking effort on this please let me know !!

Give me a mail if you're interested in helping not if you're interrested in the result, that is long from here ;-)
