I'd just like to announce I've just ported gifsicle 1.10 to Os/2.

Gifsicle is a gif manipulation software that let you play with gif animations, colors etc. I think that if you work with gif files it's worth the download...

You can find it on my homepage (English -> Project section) :

Remember to visit http://www.quasarbbs.com the association that hosts my site :)

Maccasoft has released Internet Gate 1.43 for OS/2 (and other operating systems). Internet Gate is a dial-on-demand proxy server that allows several PC's in a network to access the Internet through a single PC (either through dial-up, LAN or cable modem access). 1.43 fixes a problem I reported where a client machine cannot access links off of certain pages (Netscape, Yahoo) on the Internet. The evaluation version will only allow one PC to connect through the proxy. Different licensing fees exist depending on how many machines you need to connect.

A new year and a new version of the DFSee program! For those of you that don't know DFSee yet, DFSee is a display, analysis and recovery tool for disks and filesystems.

Started as an HPFS-tool for OS/2 only in 1994, it now covers:

Because of the targeted use for DFSee it is a command-line and text-only utility (no GUI). At the moment OS/2, Win-NT and DOS (+ Win9x) versions exist, allowing use from bootable diskettes as well.

Version 2.82 of the DFSee disk-analysis and repair utility adds several new features and some bug-fixes like:

You can allways get the latest version from the WEB-site mentioned below. It is usualy available from HOBBES, LEO and other sites too but with some delay ...

Look for DFSee ...

The Sound Blaster AWE64 Under OS/2 page previously maintained by John LeMay has been incorporated into my OS/2 site. The page has been reorganized into one page containing both the OS/2 and WinOS2 drivers and setups:
http://www.islandnet.com/~rharvey/os2/awe64os2.html

Andrea Penna is currently working on an Italian translation of the page and of the drivers support documentation which will be linked from this site when it is complete.

To contribute changes or additions to the page please contact rharvey@islandnet.com with AWE64 in your subject line.

New and interesting projects for the Open Source enthusiast:

Latte (http://www.latte.org/)

Latte is a tool which makes writing HTML pages in a text editor easier by providing LaTeX-like tags which are converted to real HTML automatically. It's released on a variant of the GPL and it's available for a variety of platforms, but not OS/2. Perhaps there's a C++ programmer out there who wants to make an OS/2 version?

Jabber (http://jabber.org/)

First announced on Slashdot. An open-source messaging application that's compatible with ICQ, and uses XML. Any interested developers?

A refreshed Novell Netware client version 2.12 is available at:
http://support.novell.com/products/os2nc212/patches.htm

Both a diskette version and full download are available. Also note in the text "Technical support for this product will cease after the year 2000". I am unsure what this actually means and given that the only file I can see that has been refreshed is a text file this may well be the last Netware client for OS/2.

Prolog Develpment Center (PDC), the developers of Visual Prolog have just announced availability of their full Professional product as freeware for home and educational use. This fulfills their promise announced at Warpstock 98. The product is a fully functional Prolog compiler which cross compiles GUI and text-mode programs for OS/2 and all flavors of Windows. Also included are SCO Unix and Linux compilers which work for the text-mode programs. Imagine writing a GUI program under OS/2 and compiling it for Windows without any changes! I do this all the time; you have to try it to experience how cool it really is! You can even compile the Win32 stuff under the OS/2 development environment, and run it on a nearby Windows machine!

The freeware product is for now being delivered on CD for a $30 media and handling charge (shipping is included, not extra). They will be posting the product on their Web site shortly, but it is 200+ Megs, so the disk is well worth it.

Any programs you develop while learning will remain fully functional when you choose to purchase the commercial licence. The only functional difference will be that the freeware version puts a freeware notice in your executable, so we all remain honest about selling products before paying for the commercial developer's licence.

Have a look at their announcement at:
http://www.pdc.dk/vip/vipinfo/freeware_version.htm

I have just released version 0.47 of njPipes, my unoffical port of the CMS/TSO Pipeline product to netrexx and java. I have added a few new stages to make using pipes from java easier. Next on the todo list is to make pipes into java beans. This will allow a java programmer, using almost any IDE, to leverage NetRexx and njPipes with just pipes knowledge.

I have also enhanced the faq.txt file in the njPipes directory. Feel free to feed me questions to add to the faq.

If you are upgrading njPipes be sure to check the changes documentation. It may be necessary for you to recompile any stages you have created.

Please send questions, suggestions, stages you have coded, bug reports or comments to:
tomlins@cam.org

Luck,

Ed Tomlinson (tomlins@cam.org)

January 4, 1999 madodel@ptdprolog.net (madodel@ptdprolog.net)

I just noticed this win-OS/2 Year 2000 fix posted at IBM's Network Computing Software (NCS) Support News site:
http://ps.boulder.ibm.com/pbin-usa-ps/getobj.pl?/pdocs-usa/fixnews.html#y2knew

It's dated December 17, 1998.

"New WINOS2 fix for Year 2000, APAR=JR12296 Applies to Warp 3 prior to FP40 and Warp 4 prior to FP10

Symptom is the day changing from February 28 to March 1 in the year 2000 in the WINOS2 Control Panel Date/Time program. The code did not recognize that 2000 is a Leap Year. The fix file is MAIN.CPL."

The URL at the site is missing and searching on the APAR returned 0 results. It appears from the comment that it will be included in fixpack 10 for Warp 4 and fixpack 40 for Warp 3.0. I have sent feedback to IBM letting them know the link is missing and if I ever hear back from them (hopefully before February 29th, 2000 :-) I will update the news list.
