Boca Raton, Florida Solution Technology, Inc. (STi) has been awarded a contract by the Upstate Medicare Division of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York (UMD) to replace a non Year 2000 (Y2K) compliant DOS/Windows/NetWare imaging system with a fully Year 2000 compliant OS/2 based imaging system.

Solution Technology will be delivering the award winning Image Edition for OS/2 to be hosted on a quad processor OS/2 Warp Server. OS/2 Warp clients will be on user workstations. STi's solution will preserve UMD's existing investment in scanners and optical jukebox through enhancements to be installed in Q1 1999. Image Edition supports high speed scanning with their existing Fujitsu scanners through STi's TWAIN for OS/2 drivers. Additionally, Image Edition is being enhanced to permit hosting Image Edition's optical indexing databases on IBM's DB2 Universal Database (UDB). This will permit UMD to directly access imaging information from other applications. Finally STi is crafting a migration/reuse strategy to be able to use already imaged data from the existing non-Y2K system without requiring rescanning. The new system is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of the first quarter of 1999.

"STi was sensitive to our implementation time table and met all of our requirements for our solution," said Roger Perkins, Team Leader, Systems Programming for UMD.

"We worked closely with the Upstate Medicare Division to preserve their existing hardware investments and to provide a complete OS/2 and Y2K compliant solution within the time frame they requested." said Kent Swan, President of Solution Technology.

Solution Technology, Inc. is a leading supplier of components for image analysis, data-entry and document management applications. Other barcode, forms reading, image data-entry, and departmental document management products for OS/2 and NT are available for use in the transportation, banking, distribution, and insurance industries among others. Product and pricing information can be requested by calling (561) 241-3210 or by visiting STi's web site at http://www.stiscan.com.

TWAIN for OS/2 is a servicemark of Solution Technology, Inc. Image Edition is a trademark of Ovation Data Services. OS/2, Warp, and DB2 are trademarks of IBM Corporation. Other marks are owned by their respective companies.

In a post in support newsgroup, people from SciTech annonuced that they are taking pre-orders for SDD/2 now, since next Alpha is not ready yet and the first one is about to expire. They also posted a list of what is changed and improved in their current build:

--------------

Dear OS/2 Beta Tester,

We have been working very hard on getting the next beta release of SciTech Display Doctor completed, and ready for testing. However the next release probably won't be ready for a week or so we are in the process of running our QA tests on all our new chipset drivers. Many of you who have been testing the product from the start, probably know that the 21-day trial period is about to expire. Until we get the next beta out, you will have to uninstall the product and revert back to your original display drivers.

However there is another option. Later in the week we will be opening our online store for taking pre-orders of the OS/2 version of the product. You can also order the product starting tomorrow if you email/fax/phone in your order using the OS/2 order forms. You can download the order

forms from:

ftp://ftp.scitechsoft.com/sdd/order-os2.txt
ftp://ftp.scitechsoft.com/sdd/order-os2.wri

Due to popular demand from our international customers, we have changed the pricing structure for the OS/2 product so that you can order an electronic only version for $36.95, or order the version with disk and manual for $39.95. If you order the disk and manual, you will be sent a registration code immediately, followed by the disk and manual for the GA release of the product.

So, why not show your support for SciTech's OS/2 products and pre-order your copy of SDD/2 today!

New News:

Some of you are probably wondering what have we been working on, and what stuff has been fixed in the coming beta. Well the following partial list should satisfy your curiosity:

We're looking for a "few" developers that would like to try a self-extracting installer. If your needs are basic and this looks like something that would be useful to your situation, please let us know. We will only let a few of these out for now so this will not be a widespread test.

The setup tool will:

The installer is based on the same installer used for WarpZip. It leads your user through the installation page by page. Dare I say "Wizard style" It installs your app and cleans up back to it's original file. It will:

It will not:
(I can do these things but just haven't yet)

If these are not limitations that concern you then let us know. We will be selecting only a few people to work with it for now. If you are a freeware author please do let us know. We are very much interested in your feedback too.

We do have, what I would consider to be, a pretty novel idea on how this thing will be made available when it is ready.

Sorry to all beeing too late.

But as fax102.lzh - the free command line communication solutions fax, answer, pcm2wav and PMfaxview - had over 600 downloads in only 3 days the developer Dr.Pollack has pulled fax102.lzh from his ftp-site.

This has to be done cause Dr.Pollack has to pay for every download (about 50 cents) to his provider and he isn't that rich to pay the success of his Freeware. I'll hope he will find a solution for offering fax*.lzh for free again.

Refreshes Planned for February via Software Choice

The following Netscape products for OS/2 Warp are planned for a refresh on Software Choice sometime in mid-February:

Netscape Communicator 4.04 for OS/2 Warp

Netscape Communicator 4.04 for OS/2 Warp with Strong Encryption

OS/2 Plug-In Pack V.2.1.

The intent of this refresh is to fix many of the non-severe but annoying defects that users have encountered. It will also include support for 16 colors to accommodate older hardware and servers.

I'd like to announce that I've just uploaded to Hobbes (/incoming, to be placed in /os2/util/misc) my simple and small command line string replacing utility called ReplText/2, which I've boastingly labeled version 1.0. I use it myself in conjunction with Kai Uwe Rommel's powerful 'forall' utility (until I've implemented this functionality myself) to apply the same changes to a set of files (like all the files for a website). This version of ReplText/2 is freeware. I'll probably add version with a graphical PM interface soon.

I've put up a web page at http://home.ivm.de/~schroeder/os2 for this and future OS/2 apps I might develop, one of them being a simple directory replication scheduler (early screenshot about to follow shortly).

I'd just like to say that my free PPWIZARD program has had some major enhancements and a bug fix to the reordering of database fields facility (from comma/tab delimited files etc).

For those that don't as yet know PPWIZARD is a generic preprocessor, although most people use it only for HTML. It is also great for rexx code, you can now create header files contain code which you can if you wish conditionally generate (maybe you require different error handling for a particular common routine). It is generic in that it can be used to process any "text" files in any languages, if PPWIZARD's default processing gets in the way then there are many #Option's to change it.

For more information (and to see online examples) on PPWIZARD have a look at:

http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~dbareis/ppwizard.htm

Some of PPWIZARD's commands are #include, #define, #import, #if, #ifdef, #evaluate, #AsIs, #AutoTag. When using #define or in other areas where PPWIZARD wants a name these names can use international characters such as those that European languages use.

Example of importing a comma delimited file into a html table (the default action), using all defaults. This example will use a filter to remove a record and we want the first first name to be in upper case:

 #define IMPORT_RECORD_FILTER
\
  if Column.1 = "Wendy" then
\
Remove='This is "Wendy" record'; ;;Don't want
this record \
  else
\
             Column.1 = translate(Column.1);    ;;Make column
#1 upper case
 #import ImportMe.CMA CMA "" "First
Name" "Surname" "Job"

Some of the recent changes are:

For more information on the changes, have a look at:

Version 1.7 of WarpNote has been released. Again, the program has been refined to meet user's needs as close as possible while still small in size and compatible with each and any system extension one might have installed.

WarpNote replaces the "hardware" sticky notes that many computer users still use by offering "software" sticky notes on the OS/2 desktop. The program is highly configurable, e.g. font and color settings can be set up for each note, and allows the user to take notes at any time and come back to the text written down with a single click on the mouse.

WarpNote comes with a complete set of scripting commands that allow automatic operation for almost any purpose. A birthday reminder is included as an example program.

See a review by Diane Gartner on her Land of Beyond site at:

http://www2.crosswinds.net/hartford/~os2/index.html

The WarpNote website is http://www.geocities.com/rodeodrive/2048/warpnote.html

The WarpNote package (only 85 kilobytes) can also be downloaded from the BMT Micro ftp site at ftp.bmtmicro.com/bmtmicro/wnote17.zip.

Aviar, Inc. releases Ver. 1.01 of Oz., its voice-activated CMMS. Oz. works under Aurora Pittsburgh, PA -- Aviar, parent company of Ounce of Prevention Software, announced today that, it has released Ver. 1.01 of its Oz. of Prevention System for the OS/2 platforms. Oz was fully tested and runs well under IBM's new Warp Server for e-business (Aurora) with DB2 Universal 5.2.

Included in the new version are Barcoding capabilities. Using this feature in Oz., the printed Work Order containing the Bar Code symbol for the WO Number can be taken by the Maintenance workers to the Parts Room when requesting the needed parts. There, the Parts Clerk can swipe the Bar Code symbol on the Work Order and the Bar Code symbol on the Part label. The Parts Clerk can manually enter the quantity of each part. The Bar Code device then can download a text file to the \Oz\BCFiles folder at the end of the day.

When you run "Process Bar Code Files" program, the Parts Inventory will be reduced by the quantity of each Part used. The Parts are automatically attached to the Work Order, so the task of WO Completion becomes almost painless. The format of the Bar Code files is customizable in the Oz "Preferences" section. The new version also adds the Work Order Number to the Storeroom Request Screen. When a WO Number is specified, all the information concerning the Equipment is filled in automatically. Parts requested this way are reduced from Inventory instantly, and the Parts are automatically added to the "Parts" section of the completed WO. This makes the WO Completion process significantly easier.

Version 1.01 also provides an almost mind-boggling selection of Cost Reporting options - 629,300 different reports. John Urbaniak, Aviar's President, was quoted as saying: "No other CMMS on the market has such reporting power!"

Mr. Urbaniak further stated that he was pleased, after testing, to find that Oz runs extremely well under Warp Server for e-business (Aurora). He said, "Aurora is easy to install, fast and reliable. We believe our customers will benefit greatly from the speed and power of Oz running on Aurora. One of the purposes of a CMMS is to save companies money in their maintenance management operations. With Oz and Aurora, they will also save time."

Oz. is featured on Aviar's webpage: (http://www.oops-web.com) and is being sold both as a turnkey system and software-only directly through Aviar's Sales Department.

Aviar, Inc. was founded in 1983 by Dr. Urbaniak to provide top-quality PC software for commercial and industrial users. Aviar's OOPS! was first released more than 10 years ago and is still in use by companies around the world. In recent years, the company has placed most of its focus on development of speech-activated systems.
