More on Windows-free PCs

In Germany we have a bunch of computer stores called 'Atelco' all over the country.

Since their appearance around 4 years ago they never sold PCs with any operating system at all (usually their complete PC systems were mere compositions of separate parts only).

Of course they sell Wintendo stuff as OEM, too, but almost never in a bundle with hardware.

I must admit that for a store like Walmart (they're in Germany, too) this is something one should mention, but German users have had that choice for years (if they knew about Atelco, that is).

I buy most of my parts there, and the stuff they sell is even mostly compatible with OS/2 (at least to some extent).

Normalize 0.7.2

Normalize 0.7.2, a textmode program to adjust the volume of several wav or mp3 files to the same level. Long Description: Normalize is an overly complicated tool for adjusting the volume of wave files to a standard level. This is useful for things like creating mixed CD's and mp3 collections, where different recording levels on different albums can cause the volume to vary greatly from song to song. (Can now adjust mp3 files).

CLP(R) Constraint programming for OS/2

Constraint programming is a powerful technique which has made greate strides over the past 10 years. One of the classic implementations is CLP(R) which can solve simultaneous equations/relations in the Real domain and solve general constraint problems in the tree domain (symbols and terms).

I have just built CLP(R) from the distribution sources using GCC, EMX and the makefile for OS/2 supplied in the distribution. It is simple to build and works great on OS/2. The distribution is freely available for personal and experimental use, from the author: Joxan Jaffar, joxan@comp.nus.edu.sg

New dragtext beta

A new beta version of DragText v3.5 is now available from:

http://www.e-vertise.com/dragtext/beta.html

This beta (v3.F3) extends DT's newest feature -Moving Targets- to the WPS. Now, when you drag WPS objects you can have DT move target windows up and down in the z-order, either automatically or by pressing a key or mouse button. v3.F3 lets you keep unintended targets from popping up by setting a delay before DT raises a window automatically.

v3.F3 also offers Odin support so you can use DragText with your Windows programs, along with various smaller changes & bug fixes.

This beta EXPIRES at the end of April, 2002. Until then, all of its features are enabled and no registration is needed. Please do not post it to hobbes or other sites.

BTW... if you want the beta without the Web page, it's here: http://www.e-vertise.com/dragtext/drgtxtf3.zip

Formerly lclint, a "better lint" for C source code

Splint is a tool for statically checking C programs for security vulnerabilities and coding mistakes. With minimal effort, Splint can be used as a better lint. osFree Technology Preview released

osFree, a noncommercial OS/2-compatible system, sees the light of day. English and Russian versions are available at Hobbes. The project invites new participants, below is the manifesto of osFree team:

The osFree team is looking for developers that could help us build an opensource OS/2 clone.

The OS/2 operating system has served us well during the years we have used it. OS/2 still has its strengths but sadly the developer (IBM) has decided that the strengths do not count anymore. In the end of 2002 all "free" (IBM calls SWC free!) updates will be terminated and in the end of 2006 the plug will finally be pulled.

Soon we will have two choices, migrate to another OS or keep running something that will soon turn really old. eComStation may be a dark horse here, but they are still dependant of what IBM will allow them to do.

Or, is there another possibility ?

In the recent years, open source has made its way into the mainstream computing world. It would be a perfect solution to our problems. Anyone can use the OS and noone will have the power to stop anyone else from enhancing it.

IBM has several times been asked to opensource OS/2 but to no avail. Their reasons have been more or less muddy.

Therefore we propose a mission to clone OS/2!

As you have seen we have already gained some ground with our osFree Technology Preview Edition but we need your help to:

- Implement more, lots of stuff needs to be written: Networking, more drivers, Presentation Manager, WPS and so on.Br>

- Create a good way to share the code (CVS, build environment) and transform the existing code to an opensource compiler.

- Create our own SDK/DDK.

- Build documentation both for developers and end users.

If you are interested, please join our yahoogroup

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/osFree/ and tell us how you can help !

Make 3.79.1 available for testing...

GNU Make is an important program for anyone compiling programs with EMX/GCC. Unfortunately on OS/2 we have had to use old versions of Make for a long time. The most recent of which is v3.76.1, but there are many different releases of this port and they do contain a number of bugs, some different from other releases, so it makes it particularly difficult to accurately report any problems . Now there is a new port of 3.79.1 and it would be nice to get this tested as rigorously as possible, so if you do use Make, please give this new port a test and report any problems so that they can be corrected.

It's available here:-
