I am relocating as of today (Thursday Feb 27) and will be unable to make keys for new software registrations untill the second week of March. I will have connectivity in our new home in the western US as of Monday but will be spending a week in Phoenix before we settle in LV and get our systems up and running.

I will check in as often as possible in the meantime. Thank you all for your patience support.

Some more changes at consultron.c

I've rejigged my news feeder programs again. They're now running every fifteen minutes, at a higher priority, and I've also boosted the priority of the news server itself. I'd appreciate it if people would test the news.consultron.ca news server and let me know if they are experiencing better performance. Please let me know by posting in

news://news.consultron.ca/consultron.discussion

Thanks a lot!

Regards,

WarpOverlay fix

This is not an official new release. The file is on the authors testcase server. If you have problems with WO you maybe want to give it a try.

http://www.logicsystems.ru/elf/data/WO/WO_FIX.ZIP

WarpOverlay web site: http://os2.kiev.ua/en/overlay.php

[Note: If it isn't broke, don't fix it. There is a readme file (WOVERLAY.NEW) in the package that includes installation directions and a change log. WarpOverlay requires Scitech SDD or SNAP display driver. WarpOverlay is shareware.]

Please participate in survey on operating systems

Dear visitor,

Do you still use OS/2, IBM's operating system? Maybe you've heard of eComStation, a new distribution of OS/2. I'm a student and currently writing an essay (for educational purposes only) on the market potential of eComStation. I need to gather some information to be able to make an estimation of the market potential. I'd like to ask you to help me gather that information.

I've drawn up a survey containing 12 questions concerning the operating system(s) in your organisation or home situation. Would you be so kind to participate in the survey? You can fill it out online; this will take you 10 minutes at the most. Every proper submitter will receive -if desired- a demo CD of eComStation 1.1 representing a value of $6. Of course it is also possible to submit the survey anonymously.

So, whether you're a professional or home user: go to the survey!

http://www.ecssurvey.tk/

On this site you can find more information on the background of the survey, my education and me.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Yours sincerely,
Borre Benjamins

Sophos AntiVirus

I was surfing the web today for information about a Virus I found on a client's computer and discovered a company that has AntiVirus software for OS/2 that I was not previously aware of. Sophos AntiVirus has a GUI and CLI version, both of which are downloadable from the company website (information registration required). The latest version is 3.67 and is dated March 2003, so they seem to be rather up to date. Thought my fellow OS/2 users might be interested in checking it out.

Weasel version 1.63 released

The Weasel mail server has now been upgraded to version 1.63. You can get it from
http://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/os2/Weasel.html
or
ftp://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/Weasel/weasel163.zip

This is a relatively minor update to consolidate some changes following the large changes of version 1.62, and to confirm that SMTP AUTH has been tested.

LIST OF CHANGES

Version 1.63
Don't automatically create a 'postmaster' account if there is an alias, possibly wild, that will handle 'postmaster' mail.
Fixed: crash when loading complicated set of aliases, a crash that appears to be caused by an OS/2 Prf API bug.
Increased the "listen" queue length to 5.
Removed the "routing loop?" from the "no relay path to destination" error message, because there are too many cases where this is a temporary loss of connection rather than a routing loop.
For outgoing mail, increased the timeout on the initial connection attempt from 75 to 150 seconds. This is to accommodate the deteriorating network performance now that so many ISPs are replacing their fast Unix mail servers by slow Windows servers.

OS/2 Wireless Users mailing list

I've set up an open mailing list on my server for discussion of wireless connectivity under OS/2. Topics of discussion include wireless networking (802.11x, IrDA, Bluetooth, etc.) and related networking protocols & technologies (TCP/IP, IPX, routing, etc.) in an OS/2 environment (or connectivity between OS/2 and other operating systems).

To subscribe to the list, send a message to steward@2rosenthals.com with the command

"subscribe os2-wireless_users"

in the body (omit the quotes).

USB Scanners for Tame 0.96

Tame 0.96 will be a PM-Frontend for Sane, it is currently as Release Candidate at our beta testers. It will be officially available as soon

We got the confirmation from our testers and the NLS-files (it will be available in english, german, japanese, russian and swedish).

As there will be a Tame USB version too containing Sane Epson USB (relying on latest sane 1.0.11 build, unfortunately with the bugs in there too, by Maeda Haruyuki) it would be nice to have as many as possible Epson USB Scanners supported out of the box.

If anybody has one of the following scanners please drop me a note staedtler-przyborski@web.de (please _don't_ ask for others, you are only increasing our workload and will get no reply), so I can send you a sane USB build for testing your scanner and getting the scanner-specific settings into Tame.

> EPSON USB-Scanner Product ID
> 0x101, /* Perfection 636U and 636Photo. Not tested.
> 0x103, /* Perfection 610. Not tested.

vCDROM and new vCOMPAT released!

Hi!

VDDs are virtual device drivers for the operating system OS/2 / eComStation. They emulate or restrict access to hardware. They can also add APIs, fix problems or do almost anything in VDMs (Virtual DOS Machines).

Just released a vCDROM replacement that has the full functionality of the original one by IBM, but - It includes all the fixes from vCOMPAT
- It won't trap on some special pointers sent by the VDM application
- Checking input/output buffers for segment overflows
- If a VDM application locks a CD-drive and the session is closed afterwards, the CD-drive is automatically unlocked
- Workaround for OS2CDROM/CD-ROM IFS bug, that doesnt allow getting handles for a drive, if no CD is inserted
- Workaround for a buffer-overflow problem, when using a special FSCTL on CD-ROM drives. - 100% rebuild, 95% assembly
- Larger than the original version, because I didn't do pseudo-optimizations (like the original one) that also were responsible for the ring-0 traps due mishandling of pointers.

New vCOMPAT v0.32b contains the following changes:
- Another CD-ROM specific inaccuracy in VDM. Thanx to Max Alekseyev for pointing this out (This bug is actually just worked around, it's 100% fixed in my new vCDROM resulting in one device header per CD-ROM drive)
- Support for vCDROM replacement (disabling of CD-ROM related patches, which will safe realmode-memory) - Reworked the realmode injector, uses VDD-space and much less V86 memory now

Downloadable from: http://ecomstation.ru/kiewitzsoft/vdd-vcdrom.php
and http://en.ecomstation.ru/kiewitzsoft/vdd-vcompat.php

Source is also available, but only for people that are really interested in. But I won't give out the source for people trying to fix the braindead VDM from Windoze eXPeriment. Thank you.
