OS/2 Service Release GM20
SciTech Version 2.2.0 Build 462
IBM Build Level a.099

This release is available to customers with a software support contract by

additional information.

Installation and Setup

SNAP Graphics/se installs on Convenience Package for OS/2 Warp 4 and
Convenience Package for OS/2 Warp Server for e-business.

To install SNAP Graphics/se:

1. Unzip all the files into a temporary directory, something other than
x:\snap, such as x:\snapinst, where x:\ is your boot drive.

Use the following command and required parameters to unzip the files:

snapse218 -dir -over

2. Run setup sdd from the directory where you installed the files from
above.

3. Reboot your system.
(The system will boot up in the 640x480x256 display mode.)

4. Once the system is running, go to the second page of the 'Screen'
properties tab and verify that your monitor is selected. If "Standard
monitor types" and "Unknown monitor" is selected or the wrong monitor is
selected, then select your monitor Manufacturer and Model from the lists.

5. Go the 'System Properties' dialog box to select all the available
resolutions and color depths.

6. (Optional) Reboot your system.
(You need to shutdown for the changes to take effect. Reboot you system
now or when it is more convenient.)

When you have completed the installation, all the SNAP Graphics/se command
line utilities will be located in the x:\snap directory, where x:\ is the
drive where you have OS/2 located (i.e. your boot drive).

List of Supported Chips

This is a list of the graphics chipsets most recently supported by SNAP
Graphics/se. For a complete list of all chip sets supported, refer to the
readme.txt file in the package. This list refers to the actual chips being
used, not a board level implementation. Thus you will not see any products
from Hercules or STB on the list, but their products are supported because
they use S3, Cirrus, Tseng, etc. chips. Also, any card with less than
512KB of memory cannot be supported by SNAP Graphics/se.

Recent additions include:

* GM20:
o ATI Mobility Radeon X600
o ATI Mobility Radeon X300
o NVIDIA GeForce4 MX4000

* GM19:
o Intel i915G/GV

* GM18:
o Enhanced Acceleration and Zooming Support for Matrox MGA-P650

* GM17:
o ATI Radeon 9100
o ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
o Matrox MGA-P650
o NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 8x
o S3 ProSavage DDR (VIA KM266)

* GM16:
o ATI Radeon 9200
o NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

* GM15:
o ATI Radeon 9000 Pro
o NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440 8X

Supported resolutions and color depths are adapter dependent and will vary
depending on the amount of graphics memory, the chip set driver
implementation, and the monitor selected/detected.

Service and Support

If you have purchased an active contract for Passport Advantage with
Software Maintenance, the terms and conditions of that contract will
determine the services to which you are entitled.

OS/2 Service Releases are available only by contacting IBM OS/2 Technical
Support. For U.S. customers entitled to technical support, the driver can
be obtained by calling 1-800-IBM-SERV (1-800-426-7378) to open problem
record (PMR). Inform the Service Coordinator that you want to receive the
latest SciTech SNAP Graphics/se for OS/2.

For non-U.S. customers, contact the IBM Support Center in your country the
latest OS/2 Service Release.

In addition, you can report suspected Program defects via fax, mail or
electronically (where available). A defect is defined as a code error that
causes one of the following: (1) data corruption, (2) regression of
supported function, major application or device driver compatibility
error, (3) frequent trap or system hang, (4) serious visual problem or (5)
a significant portion of hardware or software environment is non-
functional. IBM will review your defect report and if IBM, in its sole
discretion, determines that corrective code is required, IBM may issue
corrective code in the form of a Fixpak or Program refresh. IBM does not
guarantee that all defects can or will be corrected. Defect support is
planned to be available for the Program until the service expiration date
of the IBM OS/2 operating system product on which the Program is designed
to run.

IBM reserves the right to modify or withdraw the above referenced support
at any time.

Please refer to the OS/2 Defect Support information in the OS/2 Strategy
for 2003 at http://www-3.ibm.com/software/os/warp/strategy/.

SW: Update BZIP2 v1.0.2 for OS/2 & eComStation

17 Feb 2005 19:22:42

From: Paul Smedley

As it appears that either my ISP is having problems (likely) or Hobbes is
having trouble (less likely) I don't seem to be able to complete a
successful upload to Hobbes.

For the time being, the file is available at
http://smedley.info/bzip-1-0-2-os2.zip

Apologies for not checking the file was complete last night - but it was
past my bedtime :)

Cheers,

Paul.

From: Paul Smedley

I've just uploaded to Hobbes (currently at
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/bzip-1-0-2-os2.zip) bzip2 compiled for
OS/2 & eComStation using Innotek GCC for OS/2

From the readme:
BZIP2 v1.02 for OS/2 & eComStation

Compiled with Innotek GCC

I recompiled BZIP2 v1.02 as the previous version from a couple of years
ago did not work correctly on files greater than 2gb.

As I wanted to un-bzip a greater than 2 gb file, I have recompiled bzip2
from source with Innotek GCC, and tested successfully with a 2.1gb bzip of
Mandrak 10.1 DVD release.

Note that this release has not been extensively tested.

Contact me with any problems via email at paul@smedley.info

Enjoy!

SW: Possible suggestion for Mozilla homograph vulnerability

15 Feb 2005 22:11:02

From: gnomeDESPAM@DESPAMhawaii.rr.com

Note: Mozilla & Firefox users who do not need access to domain names using
Unicode characters and have the Ad Block extension installed can add the
following regular expression filter to their AdBlock filters:

/[^\x20-\xFF]/

It disables access to web sites using Unicode characters. I would think
that it could be refined to filter out sites that use common homophones.

David

from specified web sites. See https://update.mozilla.org/ and select your

SW: Mozilla Foundation Response to Vulnerability

15 Feb 2005 18:02:56

From: "Sander Nyman"

Mozilla Foundation Response to IDN Homograph Spoofing Attack

Last week, we reported that Mozilla is vulnerable to a homograph spoofing
attack using international domain names (IDNs). Today, Gervase Markham,
acting on behalf of staff@mozilla.org and drivers@mozilla.org, announced
the Mozilla Foundation's short-term response. In the forthcoming Mozilla
Firefox 1.0.1 and Mozilla 1.8 Beta releases, IDN support will be disabled
(bug 282270). For those users that need it, an XPI will be released to
turn IDN support back on (bug 282269).

This is obviously an unsatisfactory solution in the long term and it is
hoped that a better fix can be developed in time for Firefox 1.1. For now,
the Mozilla Foundation (and other browser vendors such as Opera Software)
maintain that the problem is mostly the fault of domain name registries
and registrars that let people register homographic variants of existing
domain names (the ICANN guidelines specifically warn against this). More
discussion of the problem and possible solutions can be found in bug
279099 (please do not add unnecessary comments to any of the bugs linked
to this article).

Update: Gerv has posted a followup clarifying the change and the likely
long-term solutions. He also confirms that there will be a Mozilla 1.7.6
release with IDN disabled. Netcraft also has a nice report outlining the
problem and the temporary solution (note that despite what Netcraft says,
this article is not an official Mozilla Foundation advisory).

OT: News.Individual.NET not free of charge anymore

15 Feb 2005 15:35:41

From: "Frank Beythien"

[Moderator note: This isn't related to OS/2 but a number of OS/2 users
(Including myself) use news.indidual.net for Usenet access.]

[german version deleted]

Dear users of News.Individual.NET,

effective from April 1th, 2005, use of News.Individual.NET will not be
free of charge anymore. The news service will continue as a fee-based
service.

The details:
============

Effective immediately, registration for our news service is only possible
through our web site:

http://news.individual.net/

Registration by e-mail (as hitherto) is no longer possible.

Holders of existing accounts who want to continue using their account need
to convert it into a pay account. This is also only possible through our
web site:

http://news.individual.net/

You will also find all details on payment options, terms of use, and terms
of contract on the web site.

The time until March 31th, 2005, is a transitional period so that holders
of existing accounts will have plenty of time for convenient conversion.
Sign-up for new accounts or conversion of existing accounts made within
the transitional period (before April 1th, 2005) will not cause any
disadvantages:

Contracts concluded within the transitional period will last until March
31th, 2006 (Annual Subscription) or June 30th, 2005 (3 Months
Subscription) without additional costs. Then the contracts will auto-
matically renew themselves for another year or another three months
respectively.

Important notes:

Effective from April 1th, 2005, all non-converted accounts will stop
working.

Users who use the server News.CIS.DFN.DE as part of the DFNNetNews project
are not effected by the changes described above. Nothing will change for
these users, they do not need to do anything.

The fee:
========

The fee for an account for News.Individual.NET is 10 EUR per year (annual
payment), that converts to only 0.84 EUR per month. The price includes VAT
at 16%.

The background:
===============

The tradition of running news servers at Freie Universitaet Berlin goes
back as far as 1989 (historic keyword: "Methan"). The news service was
open for external users ever since: Until 1992, there was no access
restriction at all (as usual at that time). Later, a basic access
management where IP numbers and domain names were added on request was
established.

Starting with the CIS project (a third-party funded project of DFN) of
ZEDAT of Freie Universitaet Berlin, the news service was expanded by the
feature of registration for individual users in the beginning of the year
1998:

News.CIS.DFN.DE was born. (*)

(*) see Message-ID: <6apqmg$rbe$1@fu-berlin.de>

After the CIS project was finished in mid 2002, the administrators kept
this service alive by maintaining it mainly in their spare time. Since
this was not sustainable in perpetuity, options on how to raise money from
external people and institutions for the provision and maintenance of the
service had to be researched and created. Several approaches to find
sponsors for the service eventually failed, especially due to the lack of
understanding by the potential sponsors for the nature of Usenet.

Since July 1th, 2003, ZEDAT offers - again in cooperation with DFN - news
services to other research and education institutions for money (service
name: "DFNNetNews"). In the course of this cooperation, the server name
"News.CIS.DFN.DE" vested exclusively to DFNNetNews:

"News.Individual.DE" and "News.Individual.NET" are the new server names
under which the service is available for the more than 250,000 external
individual users that were registered since the beginning of 1998.

After a long evaluation and preparation period, the service will convert
to a fee-based service for these external individual users effective from
April 1th, 2005. We regret that it is no longer possible to offer this
service free of charge.

We would be very happy if our service convinced its users of its quality
and of the engagement of its operators during the many years of its
existence so that they decide to stay our users even if the service is not
free of charge anymore.

Besides, we would - of course - like to thank all people that recommended
our service over the years and used it responsibly and carefully in the
spirit of Usenet!

Best regards,
the NetNews Team of Freie Universitaet Berlin

INFO: hobbes support donation update

15 Feb 2005 11:44:00

Forwarded message from David Rocks on Tue, 15 Feb
2005 14:40:40 UTC Posted on: comp.os.os2.misc

hobbes has received about $2000 in donations as of 2/13. The support
from the community is much appreciated. We will probably invest im making
the disk system a little more fault resistant. And we may be able to
move to a 'newer' system this year which will mean some investment in
hardware, as these surplus systems are usually stripped before I see
them. Although I would love to build an 'OS/2' hobbes the staff here is
most comfortable with AIX and RS/6000's and I don't want to make support
of hobbes difficult.

Again, thanx for the support. The attitude here for long term support of
hobbes is very positive and I am confident your investment in hobbes
will keep it going a long time. Back again next year, if needed.

[Moderator note: For anyone still interested in donating, here are the
details from a previous post by David Rocks on this:

"So if you go to ' http://giving.nmsu.edu/ ', select "GIVE TODAY" from
the navigation bar and then select the appropriate donation method. To
target your donation for hobbes under 'Step 1" select 'where the need is
greatest for' and write in HOBBES. If you do send a check write it on the
check also."]

"Odin is the name of the project and software that allows users to run
Win32 (Windows 95 and Windows NT) applications in OS/2 Warp operating
system natively, almost as if they were intended to be OS/2 applications
in the first place. It also makes porting from Win32 to OS/2 easier by
providing a Win32 API implementation in OS/2: the Odin32 API."

This appears to be a Warpin install version of the ZIP version released a
couple days ago. at least the Changelog hasn't been updated since that
release. In fact the Changelog listed during the install has a last
change date of 2005-02-08, but the weekly changelog shows the updates from
2005-02-12. Build is listed as (Version 0.5 Build no.681 - 14Feb 2005)

SW: BackAgain/2 and PMFax no longer sold/supported by Intradyn

14 Feb 2005 13:54:03

From: OS/2 Warp News and Rumours http://www.os2bbs.com/os2news/

Posted on OS/2 Warp News and Rumours: "CDS was acquired by IntraDyn
nearly a year ago. It seems that their OS/2 backup product, BackAgain/2,
was completely discontinued at the beginning of 2005.
http://www.cds-inc.com/support/backagain.html Thanks to Peter Lazarski for
the info."

From the web site:

"Effective January 1, 2005, Intradyn Inc. will no longer sell or support
BackAgain OS/2 versions. There will be no further upgrades or enhancement
for these versions of BackAgain. Those customers now on a maintenance
contract for OS/2 versions will continue to receive technical support for
the remainder of their maintenance period.

In addition, effective January 1, 2005, Intradyn will no longer sell or
support Primafax."

There doesn't appear to be any mention of Primafax (the windoze product)
or PMFax on the site any longer(other then the single line above). There
are still updates for BackAgain/2000 Workstation and Server versions
available for download at http://www.cds-inc.com/support/badown.html
