CW-MM Classes 0.22

Chris Wohlgemuth has relased the CW Multimedia Classes 0.22

These classes are for extending the MM subsystem of OS/2. They integrate the MMIO procedures for MP3 and OGG files written by Russel O'Connor http://www.math.berkeley.edu/~roconnor/ seamlessly into the WPS. A new media folder plays any audio class known to OS/2. CD player with FreeDB support.

This package contains updated versions of the CWAudio classes (now at 0.2.2) so you need only this distribution.

New with V0.2.2:

* CD player with FreeDB support.
* Some minor fixes.

And (something Chris Wohlgemuth forgot to tell everybody ;-) the WPS-Crashes introduced by the Audioeditor and the Memoryleaks have also been fixed.

updated IBM printer drivers (PrintPak 21)

IBM's Web pages will probably be fixed by the time this gets posted, but just in case they aren't here are correct direct URLs for the updated drivers:

http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/free/printerpak/en/omnien.exe

http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/free/printerpak/en/laserjeten.exe

http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/free/printerpak/en/pscripten.exe

http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/free/printerpak/en/plottersen.exe

For other NLS versions, replace both occurrances of "en" in each URL with the appropriate two-letter NLS code. For example, the Brazilian version of the omni driver would end in .../br/omnibr.exe.

I have not been able to find these by FTP.

Free generic preprocessor (html/rexx/ipf/inf/ipfc)

Generic preprocessor with specific support for HTML and rexx. Includes external files and supplies usual #define, #include, #if, #ifdef etc as well as many others such as #import to import data from databases. Can import SQL. Text to HTML. Its syntax is very simple yet the tool is very powerful. It is extendable using rexx, for example "#if GetEnv("FRED") == substr(Var, 2)". Macros support parameters and conditional logic. Create FTP like pages from dir trees (or WPS URL objects), validate generated HTML or rexx, automatically create thumbnails, photo albums. Spell check. HTML example inclusion from file with automatic tagging. As this tool is basically a "Super SSI" there is a "SSI" add-available which simplifies migration to PPWIZARD. "OL_DOC.DH" header for creation of IPF/HTML from common source. Looks to be handy as a XML, XSL and DTD preprocessor. Also runs in Windows, DOS, Unix and Mac OS X.

Most important changes:

- PL Auto display of LVM/JFS fake EBR sectors
- CLONE no size-warning if no parameters given, just usage
- CR '-d' or '-d:0' will use current disk (after VMA -o)
- VMA '-o' option, making it the current disk (for CR -d)

Announcement of the worldwide eCS IRC network

First of all I want to give a BIG thanks and a round of applause to Massimo Sangriso from Italy who came up with the idea to build up the IRC network for eCS. He has invested much time in building the network. The network has been put up so eCS/OS/2 users can have a chat. Maybe drop a question if they can't solve a problem. Or developers who want to talk about a problem and want to try and get a fast answer.....

In the last couple of months there has been worked hard on the eComStation IRC network. There are currently 14 IRC servers in the network active. The network will continue to be expanded.
ITALY irc.quasarbbs.net port 6667 (International Hub) irc.ecomstation.it 6667 irc.itisvinci.com port 6667 irc.dinosoft.it 6667 SWITZERLAND irc.aroa.ch port 6667 NETHERLANDS irc.ecomstation.nl 6667 U.S.A. irc.dacdigital.com 6667 irc.gamezero.com 6667 www.ecomstation.com 6667 RUSSIA irc.rnlease.snc.ru 6667 irc.ecomstation.ru 6667 AUSTRALIA irc.ecs-site.com 6667 BELGIUM irc.celkunststoffen.khlim.be 6667 CANADA irc.ecomstation.ca 6667

You can get an IRC client from hobbes http://hobbes.nmsu.edu. My personal favorite (maybe not the best around), is EZIRC. Which has some easy features. This and other clients can be found at Judy's Warped World IRC page:

http://www.gt-online.com/~bri/irc_clients.html

If you don't want to dive into an IRC client goto http://www.ecomstation.com/ and click on "support/FAQ for eCS". Choose for "Live eCS Chat" and click on "open chat window". Choose your nickname and connect.

The direct URL is:

http://www.ecomstation.com/support-faq_view.phtml?url=content/ecs_community_chat.html

Please note if your browser crashes it could be that you are running a wrong version of Java (1.1.8 or 1.3 should work) or something is wrong with the configuration. The Java applet has been succesfully tested with Netscape 4.61 for OS/2, Opera for OS/2, Warpzilla for OS/2 and the IBM Browser for OS/2. If you don't have an OS/2 box handy and you want to connect, it also has been tested with Netscape 6.2 and Internet Explorer 5.5 under Windows 2000.

You can however via the webinterface only connect to the default eCS channel. If you want to reach other channels on the network, download an IRC client and connect to one of the servers directly.

For the OS/2 advocates who would like to know. All servers in the network so far are OS/2 /eCS machines. Possibly some Linux boxes will join in the future.... But our intention is to keep it mainly running on OS/2 of course...

Enjoy

WOL - Power on your ATX PC

With wol you can 'wake up' your pc simply by sending a 'magic packet' over the network. For this I have ported wol.c written by R. Edwards to NetWare and Win32; changed parameter parsing, added file input, so that you can wake up a group of machines from cron; added switch for delay between sending packets; added switch for broadcast address to make directed broadcasts. The NetWare NLM is tested with NW 3.x, 4.x, 5.x, 6.x, the Win32 EXE with W9x, NT, W2K. The source is available as contribution part of the Etherboot package. It runs also on nearly all Unix flavours. The archive wol_gcc.zip contains a NLM and a Win32 command line version, the NLM is compiled with GCC on Linux, the Win32 version with Mingw32-GCC and uses Winsock2. The archive wol_mcw.zip also contains a NLM and a Win32 command line version which are both compiled with Metrowerks CodeWarrior. With version 1.06 now the delay parameter has changed to milliseconds. new! With version 1.10 added new broadcast parameter to make directed broadcasts to subnets. new!

Now also an OS/2 version available!

JMDB (Java Movie Database)1.00 Beta #1

English Version:

============

After one and a half after the previous release, we released on 2002-05-27 the latest JMDB version!

The Java Movie Database (JMDB) is a Java program which stores the Data from the IMDB Text files (Internet Movie Database) in several MySQL Tables. After you have imported the data, you can search for actors, movies, producers and actors. About the movies and people some details are shown. For more details look at the JMDB-Homepage!

There are a lot of changes since the last release (here are some of them):

-JRE crash: more debug infos in the logfile

-new search method WordSearch implemented, so the program searches only for the words and not the exact string entered

-expert result window re-implemented

-"Edit"-menu removed

-fixed a bug in placing a result window when "SameWindow" option was enabled

-all windows have close buttons again

-when the text field in the search window gets the focus again, the whole text is selected

-when "same window" option in search window is checked, the last result window is closed before starting the actual search

-search window bugfix: when "start"-button was default button and the user pressed enter in the text field, the search was startet two times.

-new option "search again" in File menu activates the last search window that was used

-F1 opens help, F3 opens the last search window, F7 creates new search window

-ALT-S in main window is "search window" again (was assigned to the wrong button)

-Setup - FileChooser-dialog added for selecting a directory and files

-codepage problem with german umlauts solved

-connection check at every search - the status bar is updated when JMDB looses server connection

-added latest MM.MYSQL database driver (V2.0.12)

-checked latest OS/2 release of Java 1.3.1 (IBM build co131-20020405)

-updated OS/2 installation script (instos2.cmd) to find both Java 1.3 and Java 1.3.1 versions

One note:

We still have sometimes JVM crases while importing the files, so we would like to hear some feedback from the users so we can finally find and fix it.

You should use for the first couple of times the Debug Version (JMDB-JavaDebug - startos2debug.cmd), because the console is visable, so you can see what's happening.

You should also disable "close window on exit" in the Icon properties.

If the JVM crashes while converting you can see it at the console.

You may wonder what's going on, if nothing happens.

New software releases (sort of)

I have several mostly completed programming projects that simply won't be released this year due to scheduling and health problems, so I'm going to do something unusual. Now available on Mikes Notebook are some short descriptions of projects, along with links to the source code. If you want to hack around with them, they're yours.

I'll answer questions on a 'time available' basis via email. With the exception of W3F, these projects aren't particularly complex - I would classify them as 'quick hacks'. I'm releasing them because I suspect they could be useful to others.

1) The W3F HTML/PHP/MySQL file archive system. I had originally planned to release this project as open source freeware when I completed it, but when I posted a message in the php newsgroup, no one was interested. There's one major function (area delete) unwritten, and a few messed up links in the menu structure, but it works pretty well. (You can see it on catherders). It's not documented.

2)Thumbkin - The image catalog thumbnailer. This is mainly a rexx front end for "Montage", available from hobbes. If you take a look at the photo galleries on catherders, you'll see what it does. This needs to be documented, and it could probably stand to have a user interface...

3) Treesync is a high-speed directory tree synchronizer. I originally wrote it because I move my project files (80K+ files) from my laptop to my desktop and back again on a weekly basis. Prerequisites to using it are: Access to a MySQL server, RexxSQL, and RexxBos. This needs to be documented, and it should be more extensively tested than I have given it to date.

Mikes Notebook is located at http://www.catherders.com/mwcexp.shtml
