WebSphere EMERGENCY: Application Server Could Stop on July
19, 2001
Dear Friends:
IBM is trying to alert its customers to a potential problem which could affect
WebSphere Application Server. To the best of my knowledge, this alert also applies
to users of WebSphere Application Server for OS/2 Warp (available through IBM Software
Choice).
If you are using the DummyKey Ring provided by IBM with WebSphere, and you have
enabled security, you run the risk of stopping WebSphere on July 19, 2001. Read
on for more information on how to deal with this potential problem.
If you are not using the IBM-provided DummyKey Ring and/or do not have security
enabled, or if you are using WebSphere Application Server for OS/390, please disregard
this notice.
THE PROBLEM: The IBM-provided DummyKey Ring in certain releases of WebSphere
Application Server has a certificate expiration date of July 19, 2001. WebSphere
Application Server releases prior to 3.5.3 or 3.02.4 on all platforms except OS/390
are likely affected. All communications to/from the server will halt when the certificate
expires, if security has been enabled. If multiple servers are tied together for
communications, all servers must have the same level of unexpired certificates in
order to continue functioning.
IDENTIFICATION: The Dummy KeyRing sample certificate expiration on July 19, 2001,
will affect you only if ALL of the following conditions are true:
1. Running WebSphere Application Server Version 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2, 3.0.2.1, 3.0.2.2,
3.0.2.3, 3.5, 3.5.1, or 3.5.2.
==> Verify by looking in the ...\properties\com\ibm\websphere directory. Look
inside the product.properties (3.0.x) or product.xml (3.5.x) file.
2. eFix PQ47370 is NOT applied.
==> Verify by looking in the ...\bin\admin.config file. PQ47370 is not applied
if there is no reference to a PQ47370.jar file. (PQ47370 contains an updated sample
certificate.)
3. The DummyKeyring sample certificate is being used (rather than using your
own secure keyring).
==> Verify by looking in the ...\properties\sas.server.props file. This IBM-provided
sample certificate is not being used if there's no reference to the DummyKeyring.
RESOLUTION: Create your own dummy keyring, as explained in the WebSphere InfoCenter
in Section 5.5.6.1.5: "Example: Generating and Using Test Certificates."
Other temporary resolutions are possible by installing IBM's updated sample keyring
(which has an expiration date of January 19, 2004).

releases as a convenience only, for setting up SSL communications on an initial,

OS/2 Citrix Client updated
The OS/2 Citrix client has been updated to v6.011 as of 10th July 2001.

Version 6.011 English, German and French of the ICA OS/2 Client is now available
to download. Version 6.011 supersedes Version 6.01 of the client and includes the
added functionality of the Citrix Connection Manager, as well as enhanced color
depth and resolution, sound support and 128-bit encryption.

IBM PCI Crytographic Coprocessors: More Info
Here's some more information on the IBM PCI Cryptographic Coprocessors:
1. The IBM official announcement letter is 100-002. (You can find IBM announcement
letters at the following web site:

Click on the "Public Entry" button, then select Announcements.)
2. The IBM list price on the PCI Cryptographic Coprocessor (4758 Model 23) is
$2690. An optional battery for the card is $50. (Again, these are intended for high
security and/or high volume transactions, such as popular e-commerce web sites.)
The software is available at no extra charge.
This price is quite reasonable if you're purchasing a server designed to handle
secure transactions and communications. By offloading the work from the main processor,
you can perhaps buy a less powerful server and still perform more work.
3. These adapters meet the FIPS Pub 140-1 standard for commercial cryptographic
devices. The Model 23 meets level 3 of the standard, and the Model 2 meets level
4 of the standard. You can view a copy of the FIPS 140-1 standard here:

In layperson's terms, both these adapters have been physically "hardened,"
so that they are tamper-proof. If someone gains unauthorized access to the PCI adapter
itself, any encryption keys stored on the adapter will be erased. Level 4 offers
more rigorous tamper protections than level 3.
IBM's 4758 is the first device to achieve the full level 4 FIPS 140-1 certification.
The U.S. Treasury Bureau of the Public Debt uses the IBM 4758 adapter. (When you
buy U.S. savings bonds, the 4758 adapter is involved in helping secure the transaction.)
4. The Model 13 (FIPS 140-1 level 3) is $1700 list, and the Model 1 (FIPS 140-1
level 4) is $2000. These earlier models (still available) have less powerful processors
but can still do plenty of computation. Refer to IBM announcements 199-279 and 197-142
for the capabilities of these adapters.
5. There are export restrictions on some of this technology, depending on the
key length (and encryption strength). The 4758 adapter can be ordered with the appropriate
capabilities. (With changes to U.S. law, export of these products is now easier.)
6. There's an open source Linux device driver for the IBM 4758 PCI Cryptographic
Coprocessor Adapter. Visit this web site for more information:

While obviously this information will not be useful to everyone, I thought some
of you might want to learn more about the rich security features available for eComStation
and OS/2 Warp using this PCI adapter. Be prepared for some really dense reading
(particularly at that last web site). :-)

we'd all be very interested.

Cryptographic Coprocessor for eComStation and OS/2 Warp
IBM offers a very special product for supporting high-capacity web servers called
the IBM 4758 Cryptographic Coprocessor. This PCI adapter works with a variety of
operating systems, including eComStation and OS/2 Warp. The IBM Common Cryptographic
Architecture (CCA) is supported on these operating systems, providing a wide variety
of encryption-related programming services.
Using this adapter, you can dramatically increase the throughput of SSL-based
secure transactions for banking, e-commerce, and other tasks. Support software is
available to access the cryptographic services on this adapter (and offload encryption
calculations from the main processor). For example, it would be interesting to add
support for this coprocessor to Apache running on eComStation or OS/2 Warp.

ZxMail refreshed to v1.0.3 and modifed minimum requirements.

Fixed I recompiled the code without optimization, since optimisation made a bug
in the pop3 server.
The minimum requirements have been modified. previously the 32bit stack was required.
changed this for v4.02y of the stack (as reported by inetver) it may be possible
to run with a lower version of the stack, but v4,02y is the minimum level known
to work. basically if you have the file so32dll.dll in the mptn\dll dir then ZxMail
should work.
Styler/2 1.6.4 released
Finally, Alessandro Cantatore has released an updated version of his incredible
WPS enhancer, Styler/2, aka SmartWindows. A special edition of Styler/2 with minor
features is a major part of the coming eCS' new look and feel, so if you want some
eye candy plus tons of functional enhancements right now, you should take a look
at this. Moreover, with this version Alessandro has put several language specific
versions on Hobbes, which cover English, Italian, Russian, and German. Besides this,
the enhancements over the prior version are as follows:
* Various minor bug fixes, performance improvements and updates. Hopefully some
previously misbehaving applications now should work correctly.
* New titlebar bitmaps
* A new titlebar button theme by Don Eitner
* A new close titlebar button by Marco Cassili
Alessandro is currently still working at Styler/2 version 2. He's completely
re-writing it, and a first alpha version of Styler/2 v.2 should be available in
few days.
I am running Styler/2 for about two years now and I surely never want have to
miss it again! Please note that Styler/2 is Shareware and will disable itself after
the trial period has exceeded. Please consider supporting the Styler/2 development

Confirmed Speakers at Warpstock 2001
Aside from the fact that you'll never hear the words, "OS/2? What's that?",
the biggest reason for coming to Warpstock 2001 is to attend presentations from
OS/2 experts around the world. To whet you're appetite, the Warpstock 2001 Event
Team is pleased to announce several prominent speakers for this year's Warpstock
conference.
In alphabetical order:
Gregory Bourassa will talk about XML in "XML processing on the OS/2 platform."
Topics include an overview of XML and its applications, a survey of OS/2-compatible
tools, and an example of creating and using an XML document.
Rainer Feuerstein will show you how to make your own CDs that can boot and load
OS/2, even the WPS, in "Bootable CD-ROM's". Topics include support for
LAN Requester and multiple configurations. This presentation is a must-see for all
CD burner owners!
Patrick Gleason will show you how do implement proper multithreading in your
Internet-enabled software in "Design of Multithreaded Internet Applications".
Examples include a web server, an SMTP server, and a telnet client.
Achim Hasenmueller brings us up-to-speed with the coolest OS/2 tool in "ODIN
- update and tips ~tricks." He then proceeds to show you how to decrease server
downtime in "Co-StandyServer for e-business". If you're curiosity isn't
yet piqued, then you definitely need to attend, "The Super-Secret-Project".
Richard Hawkins shows you everything you need to get the Internet-to-go in "Introduction
to Wireless LANs (802.11b)." This presentation is a must-see for any laptop
owner. Developers would behoove themselves to also see Richard in "Perl for
Programmers", an introduction to the Perl scripting language on OS/2. Last,
but not least, learn what it takes to support OS/2 in large-scale implementations

Uwe Hintz helps you connect printers to your LAN in "External Printservers
and OS/2". The presentation concludes with recommendations.
Oliver Mark talks about the latest versions of OS/2 client and server in "Convience
Pac 2" and "WorkSpace On-Demand V3" (with Oliver Stein). Anyone interested
in learning about these new releases from IBM should definitely attend.
Alain Rykaert helps you implement large-scale roll-outs of OS/2 in "CID:
Software Distribution" and "LSMT: LAN Server Management Tools". Both
presentations cover several tools written by Alain that automate the roll-out process.
Darrell Spice, the OS/2 gamer's best friend, talks about emulation software for
OS/2, including the numerous gaming system emulators that he himself has written.
Oliver Stein talks about the latest hardware support available in "OS/2
Device Driver Update." This important presentations brings you up-to-date on
which new devices are supported under OS/2. Mr. Stein also helps his co-worker Oliver
Mark in "WorkSpace On-Demand V3."
