SNAP Graphics for OS/2 beta 1

The first beta release of SciTech SNAP Graphics for OS/2 is now available for download: ftp://ftp.scitechsoft.com/sdd/beta/os2/snap-os2-1.9.9-beta1.exe

This has some new features, as well as some bug fixes (MGL and SMP problems are hopefully all solved).

Please note that this is not a free upgrade. There is a 21 day trial, and you will be required to purchase a new license. I expect that there will be an upgrade price available; licenses should be available for purchase on our online store within the next week.

Supported Graphics Chips for Zooming
------------------------------------
. ATI Radeon, Radeon VE, Mobility Radeon, Radeon 7500
. ATI Mobility Radeon 7500, Radeon 8500, Radeon 8500DV
. Intel i810, i810/DC100, i810e, i815, i845 Brookdale-G
. Matrox MGA-G400, MGA-G450, MGA-G550
. S3 Savage4, Savage/MX/IX, SuperSavage/IXC

Supported Graphics Chips for MultiHead
--------------------------------------
. Matrox MGA-G450, MGA-G550

Additional chipsets will have support for zooming over time; this feature will in theory work on any video chipset supported by Nucleus.

There may eventually be MultiHead support for additional chipsets, but that is something that we cannot promise.

Thanks for your support!

JPEG io-procedure 0.1.0

Chris Wohlgemuth has released the JPEG io-procedure 0.1.0

This procedure is a drop in replacement for the JPEG procedure coming with MMOS/2. It supports base JPEG image files (as the IO procedure provided with MMOS/2) and also progressive ones. IO procedures are used to load and write different image files. For example the WPS uses IO procedures to load images for folder backgrounds or for display in the image viewer.

The actual loading of the image file is done using gbm.dll a free image manipulation library. See credits for more information about it. The JPEG support is based on work of the Independent JPEG Group. See credits for more information.

Antigen for Domino on OS/2

We are releasing a private build of Antigen for Domino on the OS/2 platform. This build (611) contains:

1. All of the multi-platform bug fixes added since the original release of Antigen for Domino OS/2 (build 579).

2. Support for the Norman engine version 5. This is EXTREMELY important, since Norman discontinued support for the Norman 4 engine as of 6/30.

Before upgrading, all program documents that update the Norman engine MUST BE DISABLED.

Please ask all existing customers to upgrade to build 611 as soon as possible. Once installed, the customer will need to adjust the scan engine update path to the following:

http://www.sybari.com/scan_engine_updates/Norman5

The final Norman 4 engine update will still be available in the default location http://www.sybari.com/scan_engine_updates/ so as not to disturb any customers currently evaluating the product.

If a customer attempts to use a Norman 5 update with build 579, it will crash the server. This is also true if a customer attempts to use a Norman 4 update with build 611. This is due to the Norman engine's lack of backward compatibility between the engine versions.

Barring any negative feedback from customers we will be replacing 579 with 611 on the website about August. We will also be removing all Norman 4 engine update files from the web.

The evaluation version of Antigen for Domino OS/2 build 611 can be found at:

RexxMail build 20020711.111601 released.

Sorry folks, but I've just discovered that due to a code version mixup, the RexxMail build I uploaded and announced yesterday contains a bug that will cause execution to fail if the "NewMessage*" switches are used without an argument (which is correct usage, if of little use).

A new build of RexxMail is available from my web site:

http://www.degeus.com/rexx/rexxmail_english.html
or
http://www.degeus.com/rexx/rexxmail_nederlands.html

where you can also view the RexxMail on-line tutorial, readme, history, and changes files.

The distribution ZIP file is also available from the Hobbes repository:

Warpstock Hotel reservations reminder

Just a reminder that the hotel block reserved for Warpstock 2002 attendees is only assured until September 13, 2002. Rooms after that date are as available and not at the guaranteed Warpstock rate of $129 single/double. For a comparison their regular rack rate for the Austin Renaissance Hotel is $217 for a single/$237 for a double room. I know most people don't pay rack rate but the hotel has told us they expect to be sold out that weekend, so its not a good idea to wait until the last minute this year to make your arrangements for attending the event.

Also to get the Warpstock convention rate you have to be sure to use the event code of "Warpstock 2002". You can contact the hotel directly at:

Austin Renaissance Hotel

And if you haven't registered yet, don't forget to save money on your Warpstock registration at our new secure online store: http://bamart.com/warpstockinc Early registration is only $70 thru Sptember 7, 2002.

For more on Warpstock 2002 please see our web page at http://www.warpstock.org where you can find more information about hotel reservations and a preliminary list of scheduled sessions.

RexxMail build 20020710.130203 released.

A new build of RexxMail is available from my web site:
http://www.degeus.com/rexx/rexxmail_english.html
or
http://www.degeus.com/rexx/rexxmail_nederlands.html

where you can also view the RexxMail on-line tutorial, readme, history, and changes files.

The distribution ZIP file is also available from the Hobbes repository:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=rexxmail

Major changes:

- The "NewMessage*" function now accepts standard URLs of this form: ["][mailto:][][?[&]...]["] in which may be any of the following:
subject=
cc=[;...]
bcc=[;...]
body=
In addition, RexxMail recognizes a non-standard URL parameter, attach=[;...] which may be used to attach one or more files to a new message.

- Removed the "Attach*" functions, which have become superfluous with the addition of the "attach=" option to "NewMessage*".

The additions to the "NewMessage" function enable RexxMail to be used as the standard mailer with programs featuring extended URL user exits, such as the Mozilla web browser. The RexxMail "readme.txt" file includes instructions for using RexxMail as the Mozilla mailer.

Some URLs may contain special formatting characters and codepage information not supported by RexxMail. If this is a problem, note that Oliver Poggensee offers a program that overcomes this limitation. It can be found at http://www.opweb.de . Note also that, contrary to Oliver's earlier announcement, you require a RexxMail build later than 20020622.100854 (e.g. the current release, build 20020710.130203) for this to work.

RexxMail is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License, see

DFSee 4.28 released, the final one ...

I just released version 4.28 last night with some nice improvements, checkout the new '-d' option on the PART command!

This is very likely the LAST 4.xx version to be released, the next one to expect will be 5.00 in a couple of weeks :-)

DFSee is the SWISS-ARMY-KNIFE for disk and filesystem problems. With FDISK-like displays, analysis and recovery, FIX commands, UNDELETE for HPFS/NTFS and imaging and cloning. Details at:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee.htm

Direct download links:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfsee428.zip
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/disk/dfsee428.zip
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/dfsee428.zip

Most important changes:

- NTFS initialization, avoid infinite loop on damaged MFT
- PART autoPid, previous partition selectable as 'part 0'
- CREATE autoPid, created partition selectable as 'part 0'
- CREATE use '-d:disknr' on autoshow commands that end in '-r'
- PART new '-d:disknr' restricts output to a single disk
- PART new '-?' option or '?' parameter will display usage
- RESIZE textual updates; fixed -max limit rounding bug
- LVMSET easy navigation using 'd' and 'x' commands afterwards
- LVMSET now has an LVMSHOW alias and shows size in Mb too
- LVMSET added -s option to synchronize size & LSN values
- LVMSET allow -v- and -p- to delete volume and partition name

Check DFS*.TXT files for details

Registering DFSee will give you the right to use all 4.xx versions and get support plus a reasonable amount of assistance by email. 4.xx registrations can be upgraded to 5.xx when available.

But even more important, it enables further development of DFSee!

Medical Image Processing and Analysis

For those interested in a high-powered image-processing system that runs under OS/2, the National Institute of Health's Image-J JAVA software runs very well under OS/2. The software can be found at:

There is an enormouse number of advanced plugins at:

http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/plugins/index.html

I've only tried a couple which I needed for a DICOM image application problem but the rest may work just as well. You will need to unpack the EXE file and run the ij.jar file. The 'run java' app mentioned earlier is a great starter;

Programmers Editor

The Programmers Editor was specifically designed for editing source code. This means that it does the common tasks of line-oriented editing quickly and easily. It does not mean that the editor understands programming language syntax. That is left to the programmer.

Some of the features of the editor follow.

It is a console application, not a GUI.
Designed for Personal Computers.
Uses the function and alt-keys effectively.
Simultaneous editing of many files.
Copy and paste between files.
No limit on file size.
Very fast search and replace.
Not customizable, but the commands are intuitive.
Tab and Enter keys are for movement in replace mode.
In insert mode, tabs are space-filled so any tabsize can be used portably.
Option to use the tab character if needed, as required in UNIX makefiles.
Has some limited binary file editing capability.
The editor is very small, about 100K bytes.

Available for Win32, linux, and OS/2.

There is no charge for the Programmers Editor.

Updates to the Notebook/2 site - April to June 2002

Hi,

I want to inform you about recent updates to the Notebook/2 site. I still have to catch up with a lot of various input I received over the past months.

Added the Compaq Presario 18XL584, which has a PIII at 1000 MHz. The machine works fine, only DOS support wasn't working. This may be solved by now, since the SDD final is out.

Updated info for the IBM Thinkpad 560X

Uploaded info on the IPC TopNote F219, a Celeron/E with 800 MHz machine. It runs with eCS, but there is no sound support.

Uploaded info on the Kapok 3300B, a Pentium III 550 MHz machine. It works, but hasn't been tested with PCMCIA-support.

Added the IBM Thinkpad X22, PIII 800 MHz. Seems to work fine, built-in Lucent modem, USB and IR haven't been tested yet.

Added a link to the driver page for Crystal audio chipset CS4299 from IBM - designed for the IBM Thinkpad X22, may also work for others with this chipset?

Updated links on my index.htm page to Sibyl and Virtual Pascal.

Some people informed me that some project is going on regarding universal audio support for OS/2. Hope this will be completed soon.

Cheers!

Sequential Utilities

I have made a set of sequential copy and rename utilities available for download from my web page at:

http://www.cottagesoft.com/~dwhawk/other.html

SEQREN.EXE a sequential rename utility
SEQCPY.EXE a sequential copy and rename utility
RENMV.EXE a combination rename & move utility

These three programs can be used to automate the backup of critical files at boot time or before starting a task that would destroy or modify critical files. They are not intended to replace a system backup to tape or other removable media.

SEQREN gets the rename parameters from a file and applies them to file names received from a pipe, redirection, or to a single file specified on the command line. The utility will check the destination file name for a conflict with an existing file and increment the sequence number until there is not a conflict. Since the utility renames the source file, the source and destination must be on the same drive, but they may be in different directories.

The resulting actions are logged in the file RESULTS.LOG in a format that makes it easy to restore the original file.

Along with the sequential rename utility, there is also a combination rename and move utility. It is like the OS/2 REN utility in that it does not work between drives. But unlike REN , the source and destination files may be in different directories.

SEQCPY gets the rename parameters from a file and applies them to file names received from a pipe, redirection, or to a single file specified on the command line. The utility will check the destination file name for a conflict with an existing file and increment the sequence number until there is not a conflict. The souce and destination may be on different drives.

The resulting actions are logged in the file RESULTS.LOG in a format that makes it easy to restore the original file.

The parameter file HOW.TO has 4 lines
1: basename
2: extent
3: starting sequence number
4: OK - without this line the utility operates in test mode
and only writes to the log file RESULTS.LOG

Usage example:

The working name of the utility is seqren.exe. The curent directory is m:\pipe_rename

The contents of the parmeters file HOW.TO is: source
.c
99
OK

files to be renamed located in the root of drive M:

M:\c.cc
M:\C_DEL.cc
M:\seqren.cc
M:\pipeout.cc

The command:

dir /F m:\*.cc |seqren

Contents of the file RESULTS.LOG

renmv source099.c M:\c.cc
renmv source100.c M:\C_DEL.cc
renmv source101.c M:\seqren.cc
renmv source102.c M:\pipeout.cc

The log file contains the commands to undo the action.

The utility renmv.exe does a rename or combination move & rename. Edit RESULTS.LOG and paste the appropriate lines to a CMD file and execute it.

In addition to the sequential rename utility, I have created a sequential copy utility (seqcpy.exe). It gets the copy parameters from a file and applies them to file names received from a pipe or redirection. The utility will check the destination file name for a conflict with an existing file and increment the sequence number until there is not a conflict.

The resulting actions are logged in the file RESULTS.LOG in a format that makes it easy to restore the original file.

It works very much like the seqren utility, except that the original source file still exists after it has been copied.

Note: These programs do not accept wild cards and only renmv.exe will accept source and destination file names from the command line.

NOTE: I have tested these programs on my pc under Warp 3 and they worked as expected. However, I suggest that you create a couple of test directories and copy some files into one of them for testing. That way you can verify that the programs work as expected on your pc.
