Retrocade is back!

Found this in the Newsgroups. I thought it may be of interest.

FYI: Retrocade (the speedy and sexy arcade game emulator) is back under active development by Neil Bradley and the rest of the Retrocade core team. The new core is built around SDL for graphics and sound. I'm going to once again take up the gauntlet (pun intended) and try to port it to OS/2. Initially, this is not going to involve porting SDL to OS/2, but as time permits, it may evolve to that.

Keep your ears open!

Serious Vulnerability in Apache 2.0

On August 7, the Apache Software Foundation was notified of a significant vulnerability that affects the Win32, OS/2, and Netware ports of Apache 2.0. It has the potential to allow an attacker to inflict serious damage to a server and/or reveal sensitive data on those platforms. To fix this vulnerability in addition to a number of cross-platform issues (a pair of path exposures and a number of bugs), Apache 2.0.40 has been released. It is considered the best currently available version of Apache, and all users are urged to upgrade.

Security bulletin:
http://httpd.apache.org/info/security_bulletin_20020809a.txt

A workaround is detailed in the above security bulletin.

INIServe version 2.0 released

INIServe version 2.0 is now available at
http://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/os2/software.html
or
ftp://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/software/iniser20.zip
or at Hobbes incoming.

The main reason for the new release is that INIServe now has an official IANA port assigned, namely port 3560. (IANA is the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.) In the interests of conforming to standards, all INIServe users are encouraged to switch to using that port.

INIServe is a tool for remote configuration of OS/2 and eCS applications. It is free and full source is included. Application developers are explicitly permitted to distribute INIServe as part of their own applications, and/or develop their own clients for INIServe, without payment of licence fees or any other restriction. It is my intention to keep INIServe free for as long as it exists.

Apple Releases Firewire Developers Kit

This should be helpful to anyone interested in developing drivers for Firewire devices for OS/2:

Apple Computer has announced availability of the FireWire Reference Platform 1.0 for embedded use in FireWire devices. With its core service architecture and higher-level protocol layers for FireWire, this platform can be used by device manfacturers to rapidly add the high-speed IEEE 1394 Serial Bus to peripheral and consumer electronics products such as digitial cameras, set-top boxes, televisions, and music systems.

The FireWire Reference Platform 1.0 is based on the "TNF" software that was acquired by Apple from Zayante in April of 2002. The platform is designed to run on multiple embedded and real-time operating systems, and provides a rich collection of FireWire services. The core services provide bus management, configuration, transactions, and real-time transfer, generic to any FireWire device. Additional layers support common FireWire protocols such as SBP-2 and AV/C, including a rich collection of AV/C sub-units.

The FireWire Reference Platform 1.0 contains the Core Source and Sample Code. This platform is available for download under an evaluation license.

After the drag, DT will even clean up, restoring windows & closing folders you opened.

If you'd like to try this fully-enabled but time-limited beta, point your browser at:

http://e-vertise.com/dragtext/drgtxtg2.zip

For more info, see

Security vulnerability in Mozilla

Mozilla/5.0 (OS/2; U; Warp 4.5; en-US; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020602 tested and found vulnerable:

+ Overview:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mozilla allows running Malicious Scripts due to a bug in 'FTP view'. If you click on a malicious link, the script embedded in URL will run.
* If the ftp server and the http server are the same address, it is dangerous. Because the cookie may be modified by the attacker.
+ Demonstration:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley/1667/advisory03e.html

[Moderator note: The site states the work around is "Use the latest version of Mozilla 1.1 Beta or disable JavaScript." I'm using a recent nightly drop of Warpzilla so the exploit demonstration doesn't work for me. So I am passing this on without verification.]

Warpstock Austin volunteers update

Randy Loflin has agreed to take on the job of volunteer coordinator for Warpstock 2002. This year Warpstock is going to be held at the Austin Renaissance Hotel in Austin Texas, October 5-6. If you are planning on coming, and you would like to help out at the event, Randy would like to hear from you.

We need volunteers to help man the registration table, the Warpstock booth, act as room monitors, help with the network setup, help with the exhibition hall setup and breakdown. You don't have to be local to the Austin area to help in these areas.

Volunteers who contribute at least two hours of their time during the weekend receive a free Warpstock shirt and the eternal gratitude of those who attend the event. Without the volunteers, the show would not be a success.

If you can help, please let us know by sending an email to warpstock-team@warpstock.org. You can also use the online form at http://www.warpstock.org/2002/volunteer_form.html

Make sure you let us know that you are interested in volunteering and what position you may be interested in helping with. (When you notify us in advance of your plan to help we can make sure we order the correct size and number of shirts, and we can better coordinate the event.)

For more on Warpstock 2002 please see our web page at http://www.warpstock.org where you can find more information about hotel reservations and a preliminary list of scheduled sessions.

Warpstock, Inc., is a North Carolina corporation. The Warpstock annual conference is a gathering of OS/2 users, developers, and vendors from around the world for the purpose of education and advocacy. More information is available at the Warpstock web site: http://www.warpstock.org

d) IBM Turbo 16/4 Token-Ring PC Card driver mismatch in Convenience Pak II

In Convenience Pak II (MPTS WR_8705), the IBM Turbo 16/4 Token-Ring PC Card driver (ibmtokcs.os2) is version 3.42 (55864 Bytes) instead of version 3.46 (54328 Bytes) which has been shipped with Aurora and Convenience Pak I. Release 3.42 does not support the "LAA-Feature" where specifying a locally administered address (LAA) within protocol.ini prevents OS/2 (in fact, netbind.exe) from delaying the boot process when no IBM Turbo 16/4 Token-Ring PC Card is inserted or when no valid Token Ring connection is available. This will be fixed with the next MPTS FixPak (WR_8706), which is supposed to be released next Month.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

f) SingleMouse Driver

IBM has released a new package supporting Mouse and Trackpoint devices for OS/2 on June 24 that is downloadable from the OS/2 Device Driver On-Line Pak site. The packages (TrackPoint II and IV) are highlighted as updated and new. The driver package provides you with the most current support for Mouse and TrackPoint devices. In the past there were two separate drivers - generic mouse driver MOUSE.SYS (automatically installed during OS/2 installation) and optional TrackPoint driver MOUSE2.SYS (located in the \OPTIONS\TP4\ directory on your OS/2 installation CD-ROM). The SingleMouse package combines the functionality of both these drivers into one. Now all mouse and TrackPoint related preferences could be changed in the Mouse object in the System setup folder. This is a required update for ThinkPad T30 owners to fix problems with TrackPoint that may stop working after suspend/resume with CP2 drivers.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
i) Wireless PCMCIA & mPCI still in the works

The OS/2 driver for the IBM High Rate Wireless LAN PCCard is still in internal testing and requires some rework before it can be released.

After that driver being released, we will start working on the mPCI Wireless Card used in IBM ThinkPad T23 and higher models (using a Prism 2.5 chipset).

We are sorry for the delay and the inconvenience this may cause.

That's it for now. Stay tuned for the next NewsFlash.
Warm regards.

Olympus digital camera USB support

A patch file has been uploaded to hobbes, to allow latest USB mass storage drivers (version 1.3) to read/write also from Olympus cameras. This patch removes the signature check that causes the current driver to fail.

It is not a full driver, but only a binary patch over the original file: it must be applied to latest USB drivers released on 9th July.

Antiword 0.33

Antiword is a free MS Word reader for Linux and RISC OS. There are ports to BeOS, OS/2, Mac OS X, Amiga, VMS, NetWare and DOS. Antiword converts the binary files from Word 2, 6, 7, 97, 2000 and 2002 to plain text and to PostScript TM. On MS Word document readers Microsoft Word only exists on platforms supported by Microsoft itself. On other platforms, reading Microsoft Word files is usually difficult, sometimes expensive and often impossible.

I am busy writing a Microsoft Word reader for Linux and RISC OS. This Microsoft Word reader is called Antiword for reasons explained in the documentation. Antiword is a work in progress and many features are still being developed. However, Antiword is usable on all but the most complex Word documents.

SNES9x 1.39 OS/2 release 13 is available

SNES9x is a fast and accurate Super Nintendo emulator. The OS/2 port of SNES9x has been updated with the following changes and enhancements:

=> Drag and drop ROM support

You will now be able to launch SNES games by dragging the ROM image and dropping it on your SNES9x window. If a game is already running and a ROM is dropped, the current game will be shut down and the dropped game will run.

=> Drag and drop saved state (*.S9X) support

After starting a game, you can now drop your saved state file (*.S9X) onto the SNES9x window and the state will be restored. Note that this does not check if you are loading the correct state for the currently loaded game. This is currently your responsibility. This feature will allow you to load in a saved state with any name, so you can now effectively use multiple saved states. Although the state will always be saved with the same name as the ROM, you can copy it to other names and load it up with the drag and drop method.

=> Fully customizable keyboard (due to DualMode library update)

Every key can be remapped and time-dependent programs can be assigned to them, like rapid fire functions and even more complex moves like Street Fighter "Dragon Punches" or your favorite fight game's combo moves.

=> SNES9x is now tolerant of complex window shapes

Those of you who use Sit-O-Chirari or other such enhancers that make use of oddly shaped windows will not have a problem with SNES9x crashing in DIVE.DLL anymore.

=> Configuration dialog window changed

Window was resized so that it fits better on machines running their desktops at lower resolutions.

PLEASE READ the ReadMe.OS2 file included in the archive thoroughly before attempting to run SNES9x.
