NewView 1.41.24

[Moderator note: For those who aren't familiar with it, NewView is a replacement for OS/2's INF file reader view.exe. It allows copy/paste of text from an INF and is generally superior to view.exe in every way.]

Now with 73% more color and font support!

Please visit my page so I can get some idea of the number of downloads:

http://homepages.visp.co.nz/~aaronlawrence/NewView.html

Have a nice day!

V1.41.24
Enhancements:
- Searching for multipart/symbols now works e.g. __os2__ or CAKE_AND_BISCUITS Note: These searches can be slow due to the need to verify exact sequences in the help file.
- Improved the sorting of search results
- Support custom fonts in the file
Note: smallest size is deliberately limited to 8 point
- Direct RGB color editing ;)
- Support text foreground/background colors
- Added a popup menu item to search for the selected text.
- Adding logging of call stack on exceptions. Hurrah!
- Open Special operates like command line
(includes environment var expansion, path searching)
- Improved mouse/keyboard handling:
- Ctrl+Cursor skips words
- Left mouse + shift keeps selection
- Double click words to select
- Left mouse drag + right click copies
- Alt+Cursor always scrolls
- Home/End goes to line start/end
Bug fixes:
- Contents/index decoding fixes
- Cursor positioning around margins
- Selection problem around line ends
- Find in topic faster and less buggy
- Printing to network printers without port
- Less restriction on total length of filenames when opening multiple files (still some probs)
- Better handling of disk errors in file dialog
- Missing space characters in some files
- Crash when deleting notes
- Notes now keep leading and trailing whitespace
Note: a single pararaph note still does not keep it's final carriage return, apparently due to an OS/2 bug
- Doesn't crash if default fonts missing (WarpSans/Helv)
- Fixes to font selection dialog
- Allow run-in images to be aligned (centred etc).
- Put spaces after images if spacing is set (guess).
- Message boxes improved a bit
- Problem decoding margins set to 0
(resulted in very wide text!)
- Flickering when displaying topic with notes

OS/2 User mail list archive

This is just to let you all know that I have finally gotten all of the OS/2 User mail list digests that I have up on my web site at:

http://www.arnold-ont.ca/os2/os2_user_archive.html

This includes most of the posts in digest form starting in October 1999 and going through to December 2000. After that everything is available on yahoo groups. The site isn't searchable at the moment, but at least the posts are available.

If anyone has any more of the digests that aren't on the site I would appreciate receiving a copy for inclusion.

UPS Monitor updated.

New updates of the UPS Monitor series of programs are now available.

UPS Monitor is a utility program to monitor and log power line and battery status for a large number of Uninterruptible Power Sources (UPS). It's main function is to shut down OS/2 or eComStation safely by time or low battery signal during prolonged power outages.

UPS Monitor is available as three individual optimized programs:

- UPS Monitor for smart signaling interface UPSes supports most APC brand models like Smart-UPS and Back-UPS Pro. A rare but potential serious bug has been identified and fixed. We suggest that all users of UPS Monitor for smart APC models upgrade as soon as possible. Upgrade is free for registered users.

- UPS Monitor B supports the simple signaling APC UPSes, namely the Back-UPS and Back-UPS ES series.

- UPS Monitor C supports generic contact closure UPSes including Tripplite/IBM, CyberPower, PK Electronics BlackOut Buster and new, the APC Back-UPS 350/500CS with serial cable 940-0128A. The APC Back-UPS 350/500CS contains a combination USB and simple signaling interface. UPS Monitor C includes support for simple signaling if the mentioned serial cable is used.

More Fixes (related to OS/2) from Microsoft

For an Operating System that Microsoft find it hard to admit exists, they're releasing several fixes to their software to work with it lately ....... Here's another:

OS/2 related fixes in Windows 2000 SP3

The previously released Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows 2000 contains fixes related to OS/2 clients and servers.

First fix is "Windows 2000 Clients Use Multiple Connections When Mapping Drives to a Single Server", see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q302099

This will hopefully clear up the issue of Win2K clients eating up all workstation connections to a WSeB server. We will investigate this further.

Second fix is "Stop 0x00000050 Error Message During Copy from OS/2 Clients", http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q281546

This issue occurs because a request from the client (SMB Move) is not handled correctly.

SP3 is available for download at http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp3/default.asp

LVM toolkit 1.3

Recent versions of OS/2 use the Logical Volume Manager (LVM), a powerful replacement for FDISK. The functionality of LVM is contained in LVM.DLL, a.k.a. the 'LVM Engine'. This toolkit makes that engine available for any application developer to use as a public API. This makes it possible to write (for instance) a completely new user interface for LVM. Documentation and sample programs are included. New in version 1.3: some minor documentation updates and corrections to LVMAPI1.INF (diff file is available on website).

f) WarpIN and XWorkplace v0.9.20 have been released

WarpIN and XWorkplace have both been updated to V0.9.20.

WarpIN v0.9.20 fixes a few bugs that were still in V0.9.19, such as the XShadow breakage. In addition, this is the first attempt at getting WarpIN to do proper CID installs from the command line.

XWorkplace v0.9.20 is the most feature-rich freeware Workplace Shell enhancer on the planet. Even though V0.9.19 was pretty well received, a few bugs were still to be fixed for V0.9.20. In addition, some new icon features like lazy icon loading, icon sharing, and shadow icons have been added. Besides, a bunch of cosmetic changes were made. As usual, be reminded that this is not guaranteed to be stable (as the version number indicates anyway).

Note: To install XWorkplace, you also need WarpIN v0.9.14 or higher.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
g) DFSee v5.0 has been released

Display File Systems (DFSee) is a generic partition and filesystem browser/analyser. DFSee supports partition-tables (FDISK, LVM), (V)FAT, FAT-32, HPFS-structures, some NTFS and JFS stuff and it might support different file-systems like EXT2 in the future.
DFSee can be used
- as a replacement for FDISK and partially LVM,
- as an undelete program for HPFS and NTFS volumes
- as an analysis and recovery tool for most used filesystems.
- as a simple but powerfull binary (or HEX) display and edit tool DFSee v5.0 can be downloaded from http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/dfsee500.zip (will be moved to http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/disk/dfsee500.zip soon).

DFSee will also be presented in detail at the next Warp Community Update Workshop (see section a).

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
h) Updated USB Basic Device Support Package (OHCI/UHCI/EHCI)

New presentations for Warpstock 2002

Time is running out on our sale on registration at the Warpstock Store on BAMart (Bank of America eStores). You only have less than 3 weeks to register at the reduced rate! Don't Delay Register Today!

http://www.bamart.com/warpstockinc.html

Time is also running out on reserving a room at the 4 star Renaissance Hotel in Austin. Our block of rooms and rate is only assured until September 13th. The hotel is expected to be completely booked that weekend due to weddings and such, so make sure that you have a room and that you can enjoy all the after-hours discussions that are so much a part of Warpstock as the presentations and giveaway.

Four new presentations have been added to the Warpstock 2002 schedule:

* Migrating from NetBios to TCPbeui, by Oliver Mark.

* OS/2 Device Driver Programming - What You Don't Find In The Books, by Daniel Engert.

* Remote-booting eComStation from eComStation, by Micho Durdevich.

* Remote-booting Windows And Linux from eComStation, by Micho Durdevich.

Also note this important scheduling change as well:

* Java 2 Standard Edition, release 1.4 by Greg Shaw.

Find out how this very important announcement is going to effect you.

While IBM is reviewing it's storerooms for OS/2 stuff to giveaway, take a look at all the speakers they sent us! We will be the first event where you can talk to Greg Shaw from Golden Code regarding the Java 1.4 release which should make OS/2 J2EE compatible. We all need to know where Mozilla is going, so Mike Kaply of IBM and Achim Hasenmueller of Innotek will tell us how this important development will proceed in the future.

If you use ATAPI/IDE devices and were unable to install OS/2, the chances are that you owe a debt of gratitude to this person: Daniela Engert author of the very popular 'DANI' device drivers that have made OS/2 compatible with hundreds of computers that IBM didn't support. Daniela is making her second visit to Warpstock in the US, and this time she will be telling us about her experience in developing OS/2 device drivers. Even if you don't program device drivers, you should come on down and say thanks to Daniela. We also expect Timur to continue his regular device driver series.

We have also narrowed down our search for where to have the Warpstock Saturday Night Social. It should be Texas-style BBQ! And because we should be traveling a bit out of Austin, and the places are small, we will NOT sell more than 50 tickets to this event, so book it soon at our e-store.

If you want to learn the latest information about OS/2 and eComStation, then come to Warpstock 2002, which this year is taking place in the home of OS/2 development. Warpstock will take place the weekend of October 5-6, 2002 in Austin, Texas at the Renaissance Austin Hotel. You can find the complete presentation schedule as well as event registration and hotel reservation information at our web site: http://www.warpstock.org.

Warpstock, Inc., is a North Carolina corporation. The Warpstock annual conference is a gathering of OS/2 users, developers, and vendors from around the world for the purpose of education and advocacy. More information is available at the Warpstock web site : http://www.warpstock.org

Why is Warpstock Europe 2002 in the Netherlands somewhat different!

Location and lodging

Reading the header you may wonder what makes this years Warpstock event so special compared to all other ones. Well, let me explain it to you! As a matter of fact each Warpstock conference is special and no one in particular. However the only thing which could be different to your experience is the location! This time the organization team has chosen a lovely Youth Hostel at Arnhem in Holland. You will find its cosy atmosphere only at your own home and last but not least it's situated in a very nice wooded environment. So, you will not be lost in space and look to no end for big concrete lecturerooms with very high ceilings this time. The purpose of all this is to give you as a participant the right facility to exchange knowledge and to get in touch with other (famous) OS/2 enthusiasts. If you never have been at a Warpstock event in the past, this year it's really worth a try.

If you prefer to stay at the Youth Hostel during the event, you can check out availability and make an online booking request on http://www.njhc.nl/english/start.cfm?id=6. The organization team has made some reservations in advance, so you have to check in as "Warpstock participant".

Booking requests for a real Hotels in Arnhem and its surroundings can be made at http://www.bookings.nl.

The money

Another reason why you should come over to Holland and visit Warpstock Europe 2002 on the 8th - 10th November, is to save money. All prices are including a delicious lunch each day of your stay and an early registration for three days will be 30 Euro only!!! Furthermore there is already a bed & breakfast at the Hostel for 22 Euro (about 22 US dollars).

You will find everything about the online registration and prices on the Warpstock Europe website http://warpstock.os2.org/en/registration and on http://shop.mensys.nl/catalogue/mns_WarpStockEurope2002.html

All prices mentioned here are only relevant to online registration until 1 week prior to the event. Of course, you are allowed to check in at the registration desk on the event itself, however it will cost you more money. Actually, this means that all prices after the 1st of november will be raised with 5 Euro.

This is quite clear if one considers for one thing that registration during the event takes a lot of time and for another that it would be very convenient to us to know the amount of visitors in advance.

So, if you want the right lunch at the very right moment, do your Warpstock registration on line.

Easy way to get there

Holland is a very small country, so there is no need to travel so much.

If you travel by:

Plain - please go to Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) and from there it's most convenient to travel by train to the city of Arnhem. You can get information about trains in Holland from http://www.ns.nl/domestic/index.cgi. You will arrive at the Arnhem Centralstation and from there take bus nr 3 to Alteveer/Burgers Zoo and leave the bus at "Rijnstaete Hospital" busstop. Finally, you have to walk a little wile, following the green NJHC "Alteveer" signs.

Car - take the highway A12 towards Arnhem and leave the highway at exit nr. 26 to Arnhem-North. At first follow the signs to the so called "Burgers Zoo" and when you see those typical green NJHC signs along the road you have to follow them. On http://warpstock.os2.org you will find a nice picture of this sign.

Train - from Germany and Swiss etc. you have many possibilities. One of them is to take a train to Cologne and from there the International ICE train to Amsterdam. Take a look at http://www.bahn.de for those special ICE trains to Amsterdam which stop in Arnhem too. If you are traveling from France or Belgium, the easiest way for you is to travel via Bruxelles, Rotterdam and Utrecht to Arnhem. The special "Thallys" train to Amsterdam, which stops in Rotterdam, is an excellent choice in that case.

See you on Nov 8th - 10th at Warpstock Europe 2002 at Arnhem, The Netherlands!
