SW: First alpha release of the IEEE 1394a - Firewire driver for OS/2 a

06 Aug 2004 13:39:28 -0500

From: os2info_NOSPAM_DESPAM@gmx.net

Today, netlabs.org, the OS/2 User Group Dresden and Alexandr Cherkaev are
releasing the first alpha version of the IEEE 1394a - Firewire driver set
for OS/2 and eComStation.

This version does not yet enable you to use external Firewire hard drive
cases, it will only show if your Firewire controller is supported by this
driver! Install the driver and use the included resource manager to see if
the driver did correctly recognize your Firewire controller!

The driver should work with all Firewire Controllers based on the VIA
Technologies Inc. VT6306 chipset. However, Alexandr did a great job and
enhanced the driver so that it should also work with other OHCI compatible
controllers. We have already successfully tested the driver on the
Firewire controller build into the IBM Thinkpad A30p.

Firewire Support for OS/2 and eComStation is a Netlabs.org project.
Because Firewire support is hardware related, it will also be hosted at
os2warp.be. The Firewire pages at os2warp.be are currently under
construction. Once they are finished, they will allow OS/2 users easy
access to the latest Firewire drivers and support information. We are glad
to work together with os2warp.be, the leading web site dedicated to OS/2,
eComStation and hardware.

Mark, interesting update in this regard:

"You are now able to join the beta program and participate in the
development and refinement of this product. Participating will entitle
you to the GA product, once released, for one host platform. The price
for the GA will be $99,- so this will save you $49 right away! The
multi-platform version will be priced at $199,- including all available

SW: Mozilla / Mozilla Firefox User Interface Spoofing Vulnerability

03 Aug 2004 08:00:57 -0500

From: "Mark Dodel"

Just so we are not completely lulled about the lack of exploits on OS/2, I
thought I'd pass on this security alert about Mozilla based browsers that
I saw on Dr. Jerry Pournelle's web site
<http://jerrypournelle.com/view/view320.html#warn> Since it uses
Mozilla's internal programming language this is cross-platform and should
effect the OS/2 versions as well.:

Dear Dr Pournelle,

< http://secunia.com/advisories/12188/ > Here we go again:

"*Description*: A vulnerability has been reported in Mozilla and Mozilla
Firefox, allowing malicious websites to spoof the user interface.

The problem is that Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox don't restrict websites
from including arbitrary, remote XUL (XML User Interface Language) files.
This can be exploited to "hijack" most of the user interface (including
tool bars, SSL certificate dialogs, address bar and more), thereby
controlling almost anything the user sees.

The Mozilla user interface is built using XUL files.

A PoC (Proof of Concept) exploit for Mozilla Firefox has been published.
The PoC spoofs a SSL secured PayPal website.

This has been confirmed using Mozilla 1.7 for Linux, Mozilla Firefox 0.9.1
for Linux, Mozilla 1.7.1 for Windows and Mozilla Firefox 0.9.2 for
Windows. Prior versions may also be affected.

NOTE: This issue appears to be the same as Mozilla Bug 244965. [Moderator
note: It is actually http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22183 ]

*Solution*: Do not follow links from untrusted sites."

SW: Mr. Message (AIM client) 8/1/2004 update

02 Aug 2004 08:39:58 -0500

Forwarded message from Marty on Mon, 2 Aug 2004
05:32:10 UTC Posted on: comp.os.os2.apps

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR
protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and
a variety of other clients).

It has been updated with the following changes:
* Added the ability to add buddies to and remove buddies from the
buddy list (changes are not stored on the server).
* Users who send you an instant message who are not on your buddy
list will now be added automatically so you can track their status
and respond to them.
* Local additions to your buddy list are stored in your INI file.
* Added an icon to the executable so it doesn't look like the default
program icon anymore from the WPS.
* Fixed code to ensure that packet sequence numbers are always in the
correct order to avoid disconnects from AOL when multiple threads
are all attempting to send data at the same time.
* Fixed for an extremely unlikely situation which could result in some
buddies not appearing on the buddy list at startup.
* Fixed translation of ", >, etc. at the end of a line
* Fixed to translate outgoing quotes and <>'s so that other IM users
will see them as you do.
* Fixed a potential problem with string length in outgoing instant
messages which could have caused a crash.
* Fixed the code to set an alias from the buddy list popup menu.

You can download it here:
http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage_bin_08012004.zip
or with the full source code here:
http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage_srcbin_08012004.zip

Please read the README file before running or asking for support. As
always, feedback is appreciated.

SW: Bogofilter 0.92.4, a fast Bayesian spam filter.

01 Aug 2004 17:17:08 -0500

From: "Mark Dodel"

Bogofilter is a Bayesian spam filter. In its normal mode of operation, it
takes an email message or other text on standard input, does a
statistical check against lists of "good" and "bad" words, and returns a
status code indicating whether or not the message is spam. Bogofilter is
designed with fast algorithms, uses the Berkeley DB for fast startup and
lookups, coded directly in C, and tuned for speed, so it can be used for
production by sites that process a lot of mail.
