Ogg Vorbis for OS/2

Brian Havard, author of File Commander/2 and maintainer of the Apache/2 recently (01-01-07) has ported the Ogg Vorbis codes to OS/2: "Ogg Vorbis is an audio compression format similar to MP3 but free of patented algorithms and fully open source. While still in beta it is of a usable quality but not highly optimised so CPU usage is a bit higher than that of typical MP3 encoders ~decoders. On my K6-2/450 using PM123 (analyzer turned off), playback uses 20% CPU (MP3 uses 16%). Encoding time using oggenc is around 2x play time."

The WarpUP! CD January 2001 is available!

WarpUP! contains everything to update any version of OS/2 Warp 3 or 4 with the latest fixes(*). Along with fixpacks and patches release by IBM, WarpUP! contains handy utilities, updated installation diskettes, and various hardware drivers.

The WarpUP! engine scans any OS/2 Warp computer and builds pages in a browser. These "web" pages allow single click launching of installs, services, and relevant documentation for each product on the CDROM.

It's the easiest way to understand and update any OS/2 Warp computer.

WarpUP! comes in two flavors. The Client version has fixes for Warp 3, Warp Connect and Warp 4. The Server version adds Warp Server 4 and Warp Server for e-Business fixes in addition to all the WarpUP Client files.

Check it out ... Save your sanity when servicing OS/2 Warp!

* Note: WarpUP! cannot upgrade your system to the new Convenience Pak Warp 4.5. This version of OS/2 is only available through Software Choice or eComStation.

Warp 4/WSeB/MCP/ACP Kernels updated

On Jan. 12, 2001 IBM OS/2 Fix Distribution released updated kernels. They contain fixes since xr_e002/xr_m015/mcp/acp:

File versions :

WSeb/ACP SMP (D is debug version)

SMP0111.ZIP
SMP0111D.ZIP

WSeB/ACP Uni/MCP (D is debug version)

UNI0111.ZIP
UNI0111D.ZIP

Warp4 (D is debug version)

W40111.ZIP
W40111D.ZIP

New function:

1.Support for >64m memory using int15 func e820. Note, this support is enabled ONLY for Intel Pentium Pro or later, or non-Intel Pentium-class machines. This is done in an effort to prevent problems on older PCs.
2.The presence of \os2\boot\os2norev.$$$ suppresses the display of internal revision during boot.

Bug Fixes

JR13335: Some VDMs won't run, complaining of too-long command lines
JR15194: XCOPY fails with SYS1186 or SYS1192 on (at least) MO drives
JR15038: Trap 8 in h_DeviceHelpDM running an app from a tcpbeui drive
JR15229: Files left open after ERROR_TOO_MANY_OPEN_FILES returned to app
PJ27676: Causes hangs on some systems running UNI or W4 kernels
PJ27554: Hang or (on allstrict) trap 3 on SMP (only) during beeps
PJ27678: SMP kernels could not be RIPL-booted. As part of this, there is a new config.sys parameter I13PAGES= available. Adding I13PAGES=1 to config.sys (note, no SET) reduces the memory usage of the mini VDM processes used by ibm1s506.add and the GRADD drivers. This becomes important in RIPL-boot situations. PJ27677: SMP systems hang with multiple threads of same process entering a critical section (affects ADSM client)

See README in the zip for Install Instructions.

Disclaimer: These interim fixes will be supported by IBM until the next fixpack is available or until superceded by a newer interim fix. At the discretion of IBM, you may be required to revert to GA (i.e. MCP/ACP/fixpack) code to pursue specific support issues.

Santa Clara, Calif. - Theta Band Software, an OS/2-only ISV, is pleased to announce that its two flagship products, WarpCharge and MM Pack, will soon be released under an "Open Source" software license. This means that the products will be free for personal and business use, and the source code will be available.

Theta Band Software has chosen the Open Source route to promote the use and further development of these products in the OS/2 community. These products are unique OS/2 applications, and we felt the time was right for their public release. Effectively immediately, these products are no longer available for purchase. The binary releases of these products are now available free of charge at http://www.thetaband.com/download/index.html. The source code is not available yet; however, we expect to release it in the first quarter of year 2001 under the GPL and/or Berkeley (BSD) license. Theta Band Software invites interested parties to email us at info@thetaband.com to express any specific license requirements.

I've been working with Leon Zetekoff of Solutions Techology (http://www.stiscan.com) on a couple of things. Briefly, I want STi to work on device drivers for eCS-OS/2, including TWAIN and USB.

Second, I want to develop some eCS verticals using STi products and DB2 for document management and image management. This vertical product will be positioned to consultants as part of the channel partner program. STi is currently installing a 10 seat eCS network to do document and image management for a small municipal group.

As part of our agreement, STi and Serenity Systems intend to include the STi Applause application in the eCS GA product at no charge to the eCS user. Upgrades and support would be available directly from STi.

Applause is an excellent entry level image utility, http://www.stiscan.com/imaging/applause.html which includes STi's Consumer Driver Pack which includes drivers for HP, Fujitsu, and Epson scanners.

>From a value perspective .. if the eCS user is interested in supporting a scanner, this is an excellent value. The Applause Image Utility has a suggested retail price of approximately $80.

I'm pleased to add this feature because I believe more and more users desire the ability to do image and document management on their PCs, getting images ready for use on web sites and html documents. It is also the perfect complement to PMView, which has significant features for editing these images.

Bob

Two new sponsors have joined the DVD Driver contest at

http://home1.gte.net/vzn05zki/contest.htm

David Del Col has donated an impressive list of developer's software and references.

William Pociengel has donated $50 with a pledge to donate up to $50 more in matching funds

I do not directly solicit any sponsors but I am happy to accept the participation of any member of the OS/2 community.

I am still looking for contestants. If you are a programmer and you are interested in possibly doing this project, please mail me.

Thank you,

The Odin team is glad to announce a major step forward in the development of our Open Source Win32 environment

Thanks to the help of IBM, we have been able to replace the GDI part of Open32 by a library from IBM called WGSS50. This is an Open32 subset for graphics also used for the IBM Netscape Communicator 4.04 and 4.61 ports to OS/2. We have gotten a slightly improved version of that library for distribution with Odin.

Compared to the original Open32 library, WGSS50 contains a large number of problem fixes and performance improvements that were done by IBM during porting of the Netscape 4.x browsers to OS/2.

Starting 2001-01-10, all Odin builds will be based on this library which is provided in binary form for distribution with Odin. You might see some improvements already, especially when using Scitech Display Doctor or other GRADD based drivers but all the integration work done so far has been concentrated on making it function equally well before releasing it. We expect to be able to make a lot of progress in the graphics area shortly.

Serenity Systems has extended the upgrade pricing for Warp 4 users for the remainder of the first quarter, 2001. This pricing now expires on March 31, 2001. According to Kim Cheung, Executive Director, "We wanted to give Warp 4 users a reasonable window between the GA of the product and the expiration of upgrade pricing. By extending to the end of March, we anticiapte a window of approximately two months."
