-- PPWIZARD: NATIVE OS/2 REXX TOOL --

The April meeting will continue our REXX activity, but with a somewhat different emphasis. In lieu of our usual REXX tutorial session, REXX guru Barry Mann will conduct a presentation/demo of PPWizard, a cross platform native OS/2 REXX tool that runs on any platform supporting REXX. PPWizard has many useful and valuable features, and provides an excellent vehicle for demonstrating the power and versatility of REXX.

For example, anyone who has maintained a website with more than a few pages is eventually frustrated & overwhelmed by the number of error-prone details that must be managed. The trick is to use a tool such as PPWizard to separate the website style and content. With PPWizard on the job, its a snap to change nagging little details such as an eMail address, phone number, or navigation bar that appear on multiple pages.

This month, using our own phillyos2 website as an example, Barry will discuss the maintenance of websites using native OS/2 tools. For new or budding webmasters, don't worry, there will be a crash course in HTML and using the EPM editor. All levels of webmaster will pick-up some tricks as you look over Barry's shoulder while he walks us through the phillyos2 website. PPWizard will also be equally useful for the editing and maintenance of the personal websites which are made available to subscribers by most ISP's.

Other agenda items include U/G business matters, OS/2 news, Q&A session, new releases & raffles. Free light refreshments.

Philadelphia OS/2 meetings are open and free for OS/2 users, their guests and others interested in learning about OS/2 and associated technologies.

There is a VOICE General meeting on IRC on Monday April 16nd at 8PM EDT (00:00GMT). The main topic is VOICE server services, particularly providing our own secure server for membership payments and hosting Warpstock's website and transaction processing. VOICE is in need of someone with LDGW experience to help with this project if they can spare the time.

Please try to attend if you can. We need more participation in the affairs of our growing organization. We also need to fill our two Board of Director vacancies - President and Secretary. So far we have had only one nomination for Secretary. If you are interested please send a short bio to nominate@os2voice.org along with the position you are interested in.

SCOUG meeting April 21: SNMP, auction, and more

The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) will be next Saturday, April 21, 2001 at 9:00 AM PDT, at Regal Lanes in Orange, 1485 N. Tustin Ave.

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), Special Auction, and more!

Ah, were it really simple! Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a tool for monitoring and configuring devices that are part of a network by communicating with them over the network itself. Come find out about SNMP from our very own Dallas Legan. He recently presented a tutorial on SNMP to the Unix Users' Association of Southern California (UUASC). His presentation to us won't be quite as technical, but you'll come away understanding the basics.

There will be a special auction! We will auction off a CD-ROM jukebox to the highest bidder. The jukebox is a commercial-quality 100-disk capacity changer with a SCSI interface CD-ROM drive. It is all in one piece and works. SCOUG purchased the unit with the idea to convert it to a CD-RW drive and use it to burn the SCOUG CD of the Month in mass quantities. Unfortunately, we were unable to create a mounting bracket that would support the CD-RW drives we had available. So we are now making the jukebox available to a lucky SCOUG member. As an added bonus, Rollin White will provide code that makes the changer operate with OS/2. This is in addition to the Windows code that came with the unit. Come to the SCOUG meeting ready to bid!

Also, we have club business to consider. We also expect to hear a lot more about what's being done to quantify and resolve the club's legal status and responsibilities. This month's President's Message (http://www.scoug.com/os24u/2001/scoug004.pres.html) will give you some background and information before the meeting.

We anticipate also that SCOUG's annual elections will take place during the meeting. Information about the elections will be updated as it becomes available; check at http://www.scoug.com/elections.html.

Programming SIG: Terry Warren will continue with (and possibly finishing) his overview of TCP/IP.

OS/2 Help Desk: Got problems with your system? Volunteers at the OS/2 Help Desk will help you solve them. Bring your system and all related hardware and software, along with a detailed explanation of your problem.

Networking SIG: Will be providing help to members setting up a peer network and connecting their local LAN to the Internet via a cable modem connection, DSL connection, or a dial-up connection via an ISP.

How to get to Regal Lanes:

>From the 55 freeway, exit Katella Ave. heading west. Turn right (north) at the first major intersection onto Tustin Ave. At the next signal you'll find Regal Lanes on your right. It's across from the Toyota of Orange dealership.

There's lots of parking on the south side of the building. Enter from the east entrance of the building (farthest from Tustin Ave.), not the main (front) entrance to the facility. Take the stairs to the 2nd floor; meeting rooms (and restrooms) will be on your left.

Handicapped access is via an elevator by the front door.

How to get to Chapman University:

There are two ways to get directions:
1) Go to http://www.scoug.com/warpexpowest/sitemap.html
2) Go to http://www.mapquest.com/ and enter the address 400 N. Center Street, Orange, CA.

You can park in any of the University lots for free on Sundays, but if you part on the street, watch the signs carefully or else risk getting a parking ticket.

Come to Hashinger Hall Science Building, room 203. It's on the second floor and there's an elevator for you to bring up your equipment.
