Just some information about this list.

FYI, The VOICE News list has been in existence since about June 1997.
According to my count we have sent about 4,496 announcements since it
inception. The VOICE News list is now at 772 subscribers. That is down
just a bit from its high over the past couple years of around 810. There
are currently about 15 subscribers that send back failure messages usually
do to being administratively suspended addresses or full mailboxes which
I will probably begin unsubscribing these soon to cut down on the reject
messages. Any rejection message that says the subscriber is unknown or
not a customer is unsubscribed from the list when I do periodic list
maintenance (about once a month or couple months).

We have implemented a confirmation feature for both subscribing to and
unsubscribing from the list. If you change email addresses please make
sure you unsubscribe the old one when you subscribe the new one. This can
all be done in one email to the list manager. Send an email to
majormajor@os2voice.org with the following in the body of the text:

unsubscribe news your@OLDemail.address
subscribe news your@NEWemail.address
end

You will then receive a confirmation message which you must respond to, to
have the action carried out. Unless you are having problems doing this
yourself, please don't ask the moderators to handle this, as the
confirmation process has added an additional level of complexity to the
process. You can also subscribe/unsubscribe by going to the VOICE Mailing
lists page - http://www.os2voice.org/MailingLists.html but you still have
to reply to the confirmation with either method.

Finally a bit about submitting news items to the list.

Please send all submissions to submit@os2voice.org and not to a
moderators' personal email addresses. Sending it to the submit address
guarantees that the message will get to the correct place and can be
handled by any of the list moderators.

If you have a list of items in your post (eg, features or fixes for a new
release of software), please start each item in the list with a blank
space. Otherwise the formatting may get messed up when the post is
forwarded to the list. You can put a list delimiter like a "-" or a "#"
if you like, but the space is the most important character to start a list
item with.

And a big thanks for not sending any HTML formatted messages to the list.
These are routed to a SPAM folder upon receipt, so if someone has sent any
in the past, I may have missed it, but I don't recall ever receiving one.
I do browse the SPAM subjects before before deleting them, but the volume
is staggering on some days. Text messages only please. :-)

Fixed the last thing that seems to really bug people - and I must admit
that after looking around the non-modal find and replace dialogs are more
common. I was influenced by my development tool (Sibyl/Delphi).

Find/Replace dialogs now non-modal like old E.
First time position is screen center.
Own help file can now be language-specific, as for interface.
Also look in %OSDIR%\lang and %ULSPATH% for language files.


AE is a simple text editor, designed to replace IBM's original OS/2
E.EXE. It mostly behaves the same, except for where behaviour has become
annoying, irrelevant or inconsistent with other systems/programs.

Features
--------

Fixes these Stupid Things About E:
- "Type of file" dialog.
- EOF byte (Hex 1A, Dec 26) added at end of files
- Shift + Page up/down does not select
- Ctrl + Page up/down does something useless
- Refusal to save file if it thinks it isn't changed.
- Requirement for Extended Attribute support when saving
- No File - Exit
- Find combined with replace
- Word wrap switch is peculiar
- No shortcuts for file open etc
- No display of line, column or mode
- Task list entry does not show filename
- Vertical scrollbar blank space at end
- Silly horizontal scrollbar when wrapping

Enhancements (intended to be minimal!):
- Timed autosave as well as "number of changes"
- Print
- If file is read-only, text is (initially) read-only

OT: Linux over weight

I haven't been keeping up with the Linux desktop scene much, but after
reading this story on /. The troubles users claim with speed and
stability are enlightening. One user claims that another is crazy to try
to run Linux on a K6-300 with 128Mb and recommends a 1Ghz+ system with
256Mb. Note that I'm currently running eCS 1.1 on a P300 with 96Mb quite
nicely. Fair warning for all those who feel that the grass might be
greener on the other side.

GOAT is an acronym for Graphics Optical Analysis & Translation. This
program, in conjunction with GOCR (GNU OCR) and portions of the NetPBM

Hi all.

I've just uploaded Pine 4.60 for OS/2 to Hobbes. This is a revised port
that brings the OS/2 version closer to the Unix and NT versions. It has
become fairly stable in testing over the past year or so but nonetheless
it may introduce some new issues that weren't in Pine 4.58.

In particular, either the bugs are getting harder or I am getting stupider
because there are some bugs that I wasn't able to fix between 4.58 and
4.60 being released:

* crash when composing mail if IMAP addressbooks are present but
unopened (also a 4.58 bug)

* crash when accessing Unix-format mailboxes (I have one report of
this working okay but it doesn't work for me)

* intermittent crashes with very large mailboxes (also a 4.58 bug)

* SSL/TLS is untested

Some people may prefer to stick with Pine 4.58 until Pine 4.6x gets
smoothed out, but 4.60 is working fine for everyday e-mail for me.

Because of the problem with Unix-format mailboxes, I haven't yet made a
binary distribution of the UW POP3 and IMAP servers though they can be
compiled using the source code patches available from the OS/2 Pine site.
If anyone is interested I can send you the executables privately. I will
make them publically available once I have fixed the Unix-format bug.

Serenity Systems Announces Beta of VM Application

LEWISVILLE, Texas, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Serenity Systems International
(SSI) has announced an open (public) beta program for its Serenity Virtual
Station (SVISTA) product, a virtual machine application for Intel based
PCs. The software being tested runs on Linux, Microsoft Windows, and IBM's
OS/2. A FreeBSD version is planned for later this year.

SVISTA supports running of different operating systems, or multiple
instances of the same operating system, as "guest desktops" inside the
virtual machine. This provides the user with the ability to access
multiple desktops on the same computer at the same time.

"We learned a great deal from our recently completed Early Support
Program", said Bob St.John of SSI. "And now it is time to take the program
to the next level. An Open Beta, available to the public, will teach us
more about our products. And we expect to learn a great deal more about
our users and customers and their product requirements through this
program, as well."

Though the beta program is structured to support individual users, SSI
will also support evaluation programs with qualified Channel Partners and
enterprise commercial accounts. According to St.John, "We believe there is
significant value in our terminal services product. Applications which
deploy and provide access to the SVISTA virtual machine to users across a
network. However, we see these products, and the Titan management product
family, as services offerings, not as 'shrink-wrap' products. So, we are
interested in testing with in-house IT groups and fee service
consultants."

The terminal services products deploy SVISTA to a local workstation or
provide users with remote access to a desktop running on the terminal
services system. This can be accomplished on Linux, providing access to
Microsoft Windows, OS/2, or even Linux desktops. It can even be used to
extend the functionality of Citrix implementations.

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR
protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and
a variety of other clients).

It has been updated with the following changes:

* Sound clips tied to IM events (will be configurable later)
* Mobile IM buddies are now handled properly
* Buddy list bugs fixed for member IDs the same across different groups
* Fix to recognize "<" and ">" in IM text
* Fixed login procedure when a user information packet is received out
of sequence when expecting to receive the buddy list
* Adjusted version number reported to AOL to get rid of the "forced
upgrade" message on startup
* Created README.OS2 file

This is the second public beta release of eRedMan, a pipe redirection
manager for eComStation and OS/2. It is a general pipe redirection
utility (like printmon.exe or print2ps.cmd that comes with ePDF). Its
equivalent in the Windows world is RedMon.

eRedMan is multithreaded and therefore is able to monitor multiple pipes
and associate one program to a particular pipe and execute it, whenever
data was written to the pipe.

What is new is this beta?

Added: A preliminary Help system support
Changed: Make 9.WarpSans the default font everywhere.
Changed: Removed all artificial brakes (put in for debugging purposes)
in pipe monitor code (this prevents loss of 2nd job if it was written
to
the pipe shortly (2 Seconds or less) after the previous one.
Fixed: Make sure context menu gets the focus when it is opened (it
should work now with a sliding focus feature, too).
Fixed: Disallow "Remove" if no pipe configured

Known problems and limitations:

* Printing to a pipe which is associated with GhostScript, that is
configured to write to LPT1, while VPC is running causes a SYS3175 crash
in PMSPOOL.EXE. This is under investigation. More feedback is required
here.

* Temporary files are placed into the TEMP directory. eRedMan currently
has a very primitive cleanup mechanism for leftover files, so you will
not be able to run this beta for a very long time (weeks or months)
without restarting it once in a while, depending on the number of usages.
On a PC that is rebooted daily, this should not be an issue. Feedback is
appreciated (although there was almost none for beta 1).

coolfm is the full featured FM tuner application for eComStation.

There are only 9 cities in the world with working FM stations
(according to the list of cities known to coolfm).

ePDF 2b15 has been released.

ePDF is a free PM tool for PostScript to PDF conversion,
which uses GhostScript as back-end. With ePDF you
are able to create PDF files with user definable
document informations and bookmarks from any
application which supports printing.
