VOICE - General Meeting for 2003-06-07
<WalterOS2> This meeting of VOICE is now in session.
<WalterOS2> I'll keep the log, provided I don't get disconnected too often. Been having that problem with WD a lot lately. :-(
<WalterOS2> However I'm on a different machine now.
<WalterOS2> 2a. Treasurer's Report: Peter's not here, and he hasn't responded to my recent emails.
<WalterOS2> So I guess we're not getting that today. :-(
<wdl> My time's up. Sorry, gotta go.
<WalterOS2> OK, Bill
<WalterOS2> 2b. Status of Warpstock
<WalterOS2> Mark, is there anything you want to say about WS?
<WalterOS2> Is Mark here?
<WalterOS2> I guess Mark isn't around. Maybe we'll hear from him later.
<WalterOS2> BTW, the agenda for this meeting is at URL http://www.os2voice.org/agendas/voice_2003-06-05.html .
<WalterOS2> Item 2c: VOICE2 - The new VOICE server
<WalterOS2> Unfortunately both the people really in the know about that subject are also not here. :-(
<WalterOS2> I can only summarize by saying that a new server is being built at an VOICE member's system in N.J., and the DNS has been changed to a company called EasyDNS.
<WalterOS2> VOICE2, our informal name for the new server is largely built, and as I understand the new DNS have been defined by Peter.
<WalterOS2> Hello Chrissy/Jeremy
<WalterOS2> Is this Chrissy?
<Chrissy> yes it is ... Jer is installing OpenBSD on his puter
<WalterOS2> We haven't heard from you in a long time. :-)
<Chrissy> ohhh I lurk about now and then LOL
<WalterOS2> I am trying to give the assembly a summary of the new server and DNS, and probably telling all kinds of lies. LOL Jer should really be doing this. There's a VOICE meeting going on, and I could really use it help right now.
<WalterOS2> Anyway, back to my attempt at describing things. We have run a few things in parallel, but still have a few problems to resolve, so no attempt has been made to switch machines. That is probably a few months away.
<WalterOS2> Any questions or comments?
<Doug> Is the new voice server it's own machine, or is it shared?
<Doug> Shared with Ken's other business, that is
<WalterOS2> It's a completely separate machine, Ken built for the purpose.
<WalterOS2> Some of the parts are used, however.
<Doug> No problem with that
<Chrissy> Jer says he is on his way
<WalterOS2> That's great!
<WalterOS2> Doug: I just noticed that I skipped WarpDoctor. I'll get back to later.
<WalterOS2> Hi Jeremy
<WalterOS2> Can you see Chrissy's screen?
<Rat-Salad> sorry I forgot about moving the meeting to Saturday :)
<Rat-Salad> yeah I seen Chrissy's screen and realized what was going on here
<WalterOS2> Can you read what I said, and correct anything I said, and then add your own comments?
<Rat-Salad> no, I believe VOICE2 is ready
<WalterOS2> What about the DNS?
<Rat-Salad> now it's just a matter of getting Peter to make the changes with the registrar
<WalterOS2> Have you emailed him yet?
<Rat-Salad> no.. I assumed Peter would see the request on the admin list
<WalterOS2> Maybe we need to hire a bushpilot to go into the woods and find him. :-)
<WalterOS2> Jeremy: Tell me: When Peter makes the changes, that doesn't invalidate VOICE1. How does that work?
<Rat-Salad> no.. VOICE1 will be fine
<Rat-Salad> its just a matter of adding the right DNS records to the zone files
<WalterOS2> Once that is done, we can still access both VOICE1 and VOICE2, right?
<Rat-Salad> yes sir
<WalterOS2> Could you explain to me and maybe a few others who don't understand this stuff as well as you, how this works?
<Rat-Salad> lets see here
<Rat-Salad> what we will do, is assign the name mirror.os2voice.org to VOICE1
<Rat-Salad> regardless if it has a name or not.. VOICE1 will always be accessable through the IP address
<Rat-Salad> I have to eat... I will brb
<WalterOS2> So what will os2voice.org point to?
<WalterOS2> While Jeremy is eating, let's go back to WarpDoctor.
<WalterOS2> Doug: Can you give us the latest scoop on WarpDoctor and what you're doing?
<Doug> The warpdoctor project has been divided into 2 phases (does everyone already know about that?)
<Doug> The first phase will address all browsers viewing the data, but only allow input/change by browsers using the WD plug-in
<WalterOS2> That non-JS browsers sounds tough. Is it?
<Doug> as an aside: browsers are divided roughly into three categories: 1) no JS capabilities, 2) JS capable, 3) running the plug-in
<Doug> You could actually divid non-JS type browser into graphical and non-graphical. I am hoping there isn't too much we have to do to also handle the text based browsers
<Doug> The issues that remain for phase 1 are:
<Doug> 1) finishing a small part of the database engine - it currently has a bug in the semaphores
<Doug> 2) finishing the input/change screens
<Doug> 3) testing with Apache v 2
<Doug> I hope that the first two items can be completed in the next few weeks
<Doug> If Apache v 2 doesn't work correctly, then we will have to punt
<Doug> ** end ***
<WalterOS2> Could you tell everyone why we are going to upgrade to Apache 2.0 as part of the WD project?
<Doug> On my server apache v 1.x has a problem where it creates processes that never go away. Some of those processes cannot be killed even with a process killer such as watchcat
<WalterOS2> Is it really necessary?
<WalterOS2> OK, I'd forgotten that. :-)
<Doug> IBM web server doesn't have that problem, but turned out to have a different problem that only seemed to show up with Mozilla type browsers
<Doug> I am currently using Lotus Domino Go web server, which seems to be running just fine.
<WalterOS2> Thanks, Doug.
<Doug> However, we want to use Apache, if possible, because RS and others are familiar with the configuration files and parameters
<WalterOS2> OK, there was another item, I forgot to put on the written agenda.
<WalterOS2> Here it is:
<WalterOS2> 2f: New Membership Forum (on Mensys)
<WalterOS2> Has anyone tried it, yet?
<WalterOS2> The URL is http://shop.mensys.nl/cgi-bin/db2www/mns_art2.d2w/report?catname=VOICE .
<WalterOS2> Or use the link on the VOICE web site at http://www.os2voice.org/membership.html
<Hawklord> First time I have seen VAT charged on a membership fee...
<WalterOS2> I highly recommend you use that rather than BMT Micro, because the response time on that setup can be a month or more.
<WalterOS2> Hawklord: If you select an entry, and press "Order", you find that the price is 21.48 Euro (excl. VAT).
<WalterOS2> So I don't think for memberships VAT is charged. I'll email Roderick, but I probably won't get a response until he gets back from vacation in July.
<Hawklord> It is, but never mind, the amount is small.
<Hawklord> I paid right now for the first time :-)
<WalterOS2> Please let me know what kind of electronic feedback you get. And thanks.
<Hawklord> I think the money will be put to good use.
<Hawklord> Strange, the web page shows EUR 21,80 + 4,14 VAT, but the email shows just EUR 21,80. So I think you're correct after all.
<WalterOS2> Now, you should get an entry on your next CC statement, and Peter should automatically get a copy of your email.
<Hawklord> Who is Peter?
<WalterOS2> Actually, I'm not sure what information Peter gets in his email.
<WalterOS2> VOICE's treasurer.
<WalterOS2> email actually goes to firstname.lastname@example.org
<WalterOS2> However Peter has been treasurer for as long as I remember. :-)
<Hawklord> I'm a registered Mensys customer, so they have my personal details.
<WalterOS2> Mine too, I believe.
<WalterOS2> 3. Other business
<WalterOS2> Is there any other business you would like to discuss.
<WalterOS2> Questions and comments about preceding business is also welcome. :-)
<WalterOS2> Are there.....?
<WalterOS2> If not, does someone want to move that we adjourn?
<Hawklord> That is, the meeting is over?
<Doug> move to adjourn
<WalterOS2> Hawklord: Adjourning a meeting does that yes.
<Hawklord> OK with me.
<WalterOS2> However, people can always stay after and chat informally.
<WalterOS2> All in favour of adjourning the meeting, please type Aye.
<WalterOS2> Everyone must be asleep.
<WalterOS2> All opposed to adjourning the meeting, please type Nay.
<WalterOS2> Motion is carried.
<WalterOS2> Meeting is adjourned.
