SW: Port of GCC 4.0.4 available

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++
From: Paul Smedley
Hi All,
A preliminary port of GCC 4.0.4 is now available.
Seems to do most of the things that GCC 3.4.6 can do - EXCEPT build Mozilla
- that fails build javascript with some 'declaration of C function xxxxx
conflicts with previous declaration yyyyyyy' errors to do with
js_static_assert that I need to investigate.

SW: GCC 3.4.6 port updated 2008-09-30
2008-10-02
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++
From: Mark Dodel
Paul Smedley has updated his OS/2 port of the GNU C Compiler.
http://www.smedley.info/os2ports/
"Mainly due to the fact that GCC 3.3.5 (which is what is currently used by
kLibc) is becoming too old to build the latest Mozilla trunk code, I
started working on building a newer version of GCC.
I've started with v3.4.6 - as the thought was that the amount of changed
between 3.3.5 and 3.4.6 would be comparatively small compared with aiming
for the 'latest' GCC (currently 4.3.2).
The current binary has been used to build several projects successfully -
ie rsync, Apache2, MySQL, Firefox 3.0-cvs, Ghostscript, ffmpeg amongst others
Known issues:
* strange warnings about make cycles when linking
* currently installs into \usr\local not usr
Changes since 20th September build
- Built with high-memory support enabled
- Added support for 'fastcall' calling convention (fixes warnings when
building mozilla)
- statically link stdc++ to avoid using the older libstdc++ contained
within libc063"

http://download.smedley.info/gcc-3.4.6-os2-20080930-patch.zip
REQUIRES: libc063.dll - ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.3-csd3.zip
Please let Paul know if you find this software useful. He needs user
feedback to continue work on these projects. He maintains a bug tracker

Why to use ACPI for eComStation? You should install ACPI for eComStation to:
Common (Notebooks, servers, barebones):
* to initialize PC (the devices are not initialized on boot without ACPI),
* to use multi-core CPU (Core Duo, AMD X2). Especially, if you want run
computer in APIC mode,
* device drivers for eComStation depend on ACPI,
* ACPI provides information about the computer to drivers, applications
and system information utilities.
Notebook, barebone:
* to control power management (suspend/resume/poweroff)
* to reduce power consumption
For developer:
* The main purpose of the driver is to provide ACPI interface to applied
developers.

From: Paul Smedley
Hi All,
Based on the significant fixes for HDA that have been checked in recently
(See
http://svn.netlabs.org/uniaud/timeline?from=10%2F01%2F08&daysback=7&changeset=on&update=Update),
I've been inspired to fix SB Live! support in the Uniaud 1.9.x branch.
This release also included an updated uniaud16.sys based on fixes that have
been checked in since Uniaud 1.1.4RC6.
All users of uniaud are encouraged to unzip this build over their existing
setup and see if there are any regressions, as going forward, this is the
codebase that will be used for Uniaud 2.0.
For new users, install the latest install package for Uniaud 1.1.4 first,
then replace uniaud16.sys and uniaud32.sys with the ones in the links below.

FtpServer is an FTP daemon for OS/2 and eCS. Although the standard OS/2 and
eCS distributions already include an ftp daemon, this one has a lot more
features. In particular, you have much more precise control over what
directories the clients can see.
LIST OF CHANGES since version 1.31
Version 1.32 (29 Sep 2008)
User names may now be up to 255 characters long.
Option to disable logging of SITE MNGR commands.
More choices in how to restrict IP addresses.
Can now restrict IP addresses on a per-username
basis as well as globally.

In my post announcing the Firefox 3.0.3 release, I stated that:
"This release requires IPLUGINW.DLL to use Java (not currently working)"
That was incorrect. This release comes with a newer version of
IPLUGINW.DLL included in the archive. It has been reported that the Java
plugin is working with this version. Please do not use the older version.

SW: Firefox 3.0.3 (Official) for OS/2 Has Been Released
2008-09-27
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++
From: Sander Nyman <2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net>
Mozilla's Firefox 3.0.3 (Official) for OS/2 has been released. Firefox 3
is Mozilla's next generation web browser based on the Gecko 1.9 platform.
This release fixed a problem where users were unable to retrieve saved
passwords or save new passwords (bug 454708). Known problems in this
release include: Printing to normal OS/2 printer queues is disabled.
Printing operations will instead create a PDF file. PDF files can then be
printed using Acrobat, Lucide, GSview, or Lucide (eCS). For more
information and suggestions, take a moment to review the README.TXT file
included in the archive.
You can download it here:
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0.3/contrib/firefox-3.0.3.en-US.os2.zip
NOTE: This release requires the C runtime DLLs from Innotek. In the
unlikely event that you do not already have version 0.6.3 installed, it is
available with an installer here:
ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0_6_3-csd3.wpi
NOTE: This release requires IPLUGINW.DLL to use the Java (not currently
working) and Flash plugins. Available here:
http://e-vertise.com/warpzilla/ipluginw20050915.xpi
or here:
http://download.innotek.de/javaos2/mozilla/ipluginw20050915.xpi
NOTE: To have both Firefox, & Thunderbird in use at the same time (or ANY
other Mozilla app) they *MUST* be at the SAME version level, or a
mismatched DLL will still be in memory when you attempt to start a second
Mozilla based program. The easiest way to get around this limitation, and
use DIFFERENT version levels of Firefox, Thunderbird, Kompozer, etc., is
with Rich Walsh's Run! utility. It is tiny, and VERY easy to set up. To
make life even easier, I HIGHLY recommend that you download & use the
Internet Application Integration utility from Chuck McKinnis, which
actually contains the Run! utility, and sets it up for you, along with
coordinating your web browser with your email client for "mailto" links,
etc. You can find it here:
http://7cities.net/~mckinnis/code/iai1090.exe
Or, if you'd rather do it yourself, here is the Run! utility:

SW: Firefox 2.0.0.17 (Official) Has Been Released
2008-09-25
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++
From: Sander Nyman <2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net>
Michael Kaply has released Mozilla's Firefox 2.0.0.17 (Official) for OS/2.
This is a stability and security release which fixes 9 security
vulnerabilities, including 4 rated critical, and 1 rated high.
You can download it here:
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0.0.17/contrib/firefox-2.0.0.17.en-US.os2.zip
NOTE: This release requires the C runtime DLLs from Innotek. Version
0.5.1 includes an installer. Available here:
http://download.innotek.de/gccos2/runtime/libc-0.5.1.exe
NOTE: This release requires IPLUGINW.DLL to use the Java and Flash
plugins.
Or, if you'd rather do it yourself, here is the Run! utility:

Firefox extensions (add-ons) that add new functionality are available here:

Firefox themes (skins) are available here:

SW: Workplace Sans True Type font Version 0.5
2008-09-21
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++
From: Mark Dodel
Alex Taylor has updated his Workplace Sans TrueType font to Version 0.5.
http://users.socis.ca/~ataylo00/creative/fonts/#wpsu
"Please read the note below before installing.
Workplace Sans is a light condensed sans-serif TrueType font with Unicode
encoding.
This font has been carefully designed to resemble, as much as possible, the
OS/2 bitmap font "WarpSans". This resemblance is at its best when
displayed on-screen at 9 point/120 dpi, or 11 point/96 dpi.
NOTE:
With version 0.5, I have embarked on a fairly extensive re-tooling of
Workplace Sans. Most of the glyphs are a lot cleaner and more regular in
appearance now (although still not perfect).
I decided to recreate the font file from scratch, and add each glyph as I
redesigned it. Version 0.5 represents the first milestone in this effort.
Version 0.5 of Workplace Sans does NOT support all of the characters that
were included in the previous versions. At present, only the Latin-1
character set (basically, OS/2 codepages 850 and 819) are supported."
