W a r p i c i t y S p e a k u p : 0 7 / 1 2 / 1 9 9 9 @ 8 : 0 0 E D T We are pleased to announce along with Larry Finkelstein and the Compuserve OS2 Central Forum a SpeakUp about Warpicity on Monday, July 12, 1999 at 8:00PM Eastern (0:00GMT). The session will take place on Compuserve which doesn't use IRC protocols, so please pay special attention to instructions on how to attend this very special event!
Warpicity itself is a thoughtful and interesting approach to software development and distribution. Lynn Maxson's article in the June 1999 VOICE Newsletter regarding Warpicity can be found here: http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0699H/vnewsf2.htm
How to get there:
Compuserve conferencing functions are available to nonmembers running either Netscape 2.02 or Communicator/2 provided Java 1.1.6 or higher is installed and correctly configured.
From http://go.compuserve.com/os2central the server will redirect your browser to a page that serves as the entrance to the OS2Central Forum (The precise URL may vary depending on your location and method of connection.) From, there, click on the "Chat" button to load the Java applet. The Warpicity Speak-up session will be held in conference room 20.
To get there, select 20 Warpicity from the room list and then click Enter to bring up a chat window that will look reasonably familiar.
Users entering through the applet will show up as {Guests}, and will not be able to change their names. For Compuserve members only, this limitation can be overcome by logging into the conference via OS2-CIM, which is bundled in the BonusPak of every edition of Warp 3 or higher. Compuserve membership is not required to simply attend the conference.
This means that this Speakup will not take place on Webbnet! However, VOICE members will be multitasking from our usual Webbnet location to assist with help and realtime instructions on how to access the Compuserve forum.
We recommend that users not familiar with the technology visit the conference site ahead of time briefly to get familiar with the medium.
OS/2 Warp System Requirements:- OS/2 Warp 3 with IAK or OS/2 Warp 4
- Java 1.1.6 runtime correctly configured or higher. (The Java version 1.0.2 provided with the base Warp 4 installation that installs by default into \JAVAOS2 will definitely not work.)
- Netscape Navigator 2.02 or Netscape Communicator 4.04
- Minimum Fixpak 5 for Warp 4
- Minimum Fixpak 37 for Warp 3
We hope everyone interested will attend. Not only would a large attendance encourage Compuserve overall to take greater notice of their OS/2 support efforts, but it also builds stronger links between our community and our friends and counterparts at OS2Central. We'll see you there.
The Speakup will be held on Monday, July 12, 1999 at 8:00PM Eastern (0:00GMT).

- On Monday, June 14th at 8:00PM (EDT) we will host a Speakup session with Brad Wardell of Stardock Systems in WEBBnet IRC, #voice channel. The topic of this Speakup is ..... well, we don't know, yet (But we think it has something to do with the rumoured Warp 5 client). Join us June 14th and find out! Unless Brad requests otherwise (or unless the channel gets too noisy), this will be an un-moderated Speakup.
As always, this Speakup is open to anyone wishing to join, ask questions or simply "lurk". If you can't make it live, we'll post the complete logfile to the VOICE website within 24 hours of the end of the meeting. Also if you can't make it and have a question for Brad, send it to editor@os2voice.org and we will try to get it asked, if time permits.

A M e s s a g e F r o m P i l l a r s o f t
The promotion and support of OS/2 is important to us at Pillarsoft. Our primary goal as a company naturally would be to receive a return on our investment of time and resources but we also realize the importance of our involvement in the community of people that make up the OS/2 user base.
To show our support in a way that we believe is helpful to the OS/2 community at large, we will be offering what we hope will be a nice incentive to all users of OS/2 to take an active part in it's destiny.
The talk of a new client has been bandied about lately and personally, I believe it will become a reality. I also believe that one thing we must do as a community is to bolster the support system for new users and possibly for those who may be returning.
My personal involvement with VOICE has led me to believe that it can be a very important cog in that wheel. VOICE, in cooperation with Dirk Terrell/Falcon Networking is attempting the resurrection and extending the usefulness of what was once known as the Warp Pharmacy. VOICE has also been active in setting software authors up online for Q&A sessions with OS/2 users and many other projects helpful toward the promotion and support of OS/2. It is a great organization that I believe will become stronger with your participation.
Rather than stand at the pulpit and preach the merits of active membership, we will attempt to do something of substance for anyone willing to become an active part of VOICE. For the month of June, we will be giving a free registration of DeskTop Backup to every new or renewing member of VOICE. There are two prerequisites:- You must join or renew your VOICE membership between the dates of June 1, 1999 and June 30, 1999. VOICE membership is $25 at BMT Micro
- Attend a scheduled VOICE virtual meeting on IRC and notify any VOICE officer that you are there and have joined or have renewed your membership during the month of June.
The secretary of VOICE will notify us when memberships and renewals are officially received and any officer can verify attendance at a meeting. The registrations will be sent out after both of these prerequisites are met.
We hope you will take advantage of this offer.
A b o u t D e s k T o p B a c k u p
DeskTop Backup is a simple tool that works with InfoZip's Zip (v2.2) and Unzipsfx to build a self-extracting zipfile containing your essential desktop and other configuration information. There is no magic or slight of hand concerning it's use and one can do the same work from the command line along with the InfoZip utilities. DeskTop Backup merely makes it a bit more automated and will also help you decide what files may be important to archive.
DTB will also help find and list important files on your drive so you are able to do a more detailed backup than the standard OS/2 system desktop archive will give you.
You may add to the "suggested" file listings or do a separate setup of your own important files and directories as well. Such as? Well... maybe you want to do an archive of business correspondence or maybe back up a development directory every so often. You can do them on demand or automatically as well.
Saving several distinctive backup setups to be performed on demand or automatically is easily handled by DTB. You can also scan the chosen drive for existence of suggested files whenever you feel an update of the information is needed (new files important to your desktop may have appeared since the last setup).
As usual, we try to stay away from cryptic scripts etc so "AutoStart" backups are simple point and click setups that update your situation automatically with just a mouse click. You can also save multiple archive setups and recall them at will as well as setting the scheduler to run automatically at startup to archive by "days between archives" or "day of the week."

- On April 5, 1999, VOICE will hold another IRC SpeakUp session with Sundial Systems. The topic of this discussion will be Sundial's latest product, the Rover Pack.
"Rover Pack -- our new desktop navigation and enhancement product. It's the result of bringing Orange Hill Software into the Sundial family and is based on their previous Workplace Solution (and Icon Central) products. It's got all the great tools of those products plus a whole new set of additional features.
Why "Rover" and what does that have to do with anything? Well, Rover, your trustly retriever, "fetches" desktop objects for you without you having to know where they are. And it takes the form of a small window that "roves" around your desktop to always be at your side... but not in the way of getting your work done.
Rover also provides a direct link to the other tools included in the product... so we've chosen to name the entire package after it -- the Rover Pack."
-- Randell Flint, Sundial Systems
As always, the SpeakUp will be held on the WEBBnet IRC network in the #voice channel at 8pm US Eastern (5pm US Pacific, 0:00 GMT on Tuesday). - Come to Warpstock '99 - Date and Location to be Announced on Saturday, March 20, 1999.
With two excellent bids, the Warpstock, Inc. Board of Directors was faced with a very difficult decision, but after almost a week of debate, a host city for the Warpstock 99 conference has been selected. The hotel and exhibit hall locations have been secured and we are now beginning to move forward on plans for Warpstock 99.
"VOICE has been extremely supportive of the Warpstock conference in the past, and we're counting on their continued support," said Larry B. Finkelstein, President of Warpstock, Inc., "We decided to give them the honor of hosting an IRC Speakup session to publicly announce the Warpstock 99 host city."
The VOICE Speakup session has been scheduled for Saturday, March 20, 1999, at 1 P.M. EST. This time was selected to accommodate the interested parties in Europe and the rest of the world. The host city will be announced and members of the 1999 host team, along with members of the 1998 host team and the Warpstock, Inc. Board of Directors, will be available to announce the plans and field questions from the audience. So get your questions and suggestions ready. This continues to be an event "by and for" the OS/2 community, so your input and valuable suggestions are always welcome.
