- VOICE will have a General meeting on IRC on Monday April 16th at 8PM EDT (00:00GMT). The main topic is VOICE server services, particularly providing our own secure server for membership payments and hosting Warpstock's website and transaction processing. VOICE is in need of someone with LDGW experience to help with this project if they can spare the time.
Please try to attend if you can. We need more participation in the affairs of our growing organization. We also need to fill our two Board of Director vacancies - President and Secretary. So far we have had only one nomination for Secretary. If you are interested please send a short bio to nominate@os2voice.org along with the position you are interested in.

- A message from Mark Dodel: First off, we have a VOICE General meeting on IRC on Monday April 2nd at 8PM EDT (00:00GMT). The main topic is VOICE server services, particularly providing our own secure server for membership payments. Please try to attend if you can. We need more participation in the affairs of our growing organization.
For more on VOICE meetings and IRC please see the VOICE Meeting Information page or send me an email and I will try to help you.
Speaking of participation, we have a great opportunity for members to help the OS/2 community by nominating themselves for the positions of President and Secretary of VOICE. If you are interested in helping us continue to grow and serve the OS/2 community, and you have the time to help, please give this serious consideration. We need your help, as it is difficult to continue to expand ourservices when we are short-handed. VOICE is an all volunteer organization, dedicated to the education and support of the OS/2 user community. If you are intersted please send a short bio to nominate@os2voice.org along with the position you are nominating yourself for.
The VOICE mail lists have been extremely slow in processing since yesterday due to an inadvertent DOS attack on our mail server caused by a looping bounce message from an invalid email address subscribed to the news list. We are proud of the fact that VOICE1, running Warp Server eBusiness, remained functional despite the problem. We have contacted the ISP involved, but they have yet to fix their problem, and they keep sending the post, hundreds of them every hour. We finally fixed the problem on our end by blocking the loop at our router. The mail lists remained up throughout the ordeal, just running slow. The websites hosted on the same machine continued to be available as well. Another big thank you to our SysAdmin, Abel McClendon, who has been devoting large amounts of his time to keeping our server running and adding new features and services as well.
If you subscribe to a VOICE list, be aware that unless you explicitly subscribe an address in the body of the post, our Mailing list server uses the From address in your post. If that is incorrect or mangled to prevent SPAM, you will be subscribed with an invalid address and any list posts will just bounce. Most only cause a minor headache for the list moderators. This one happened to cause a bigger then usual one. :-(

The VOICE Newsletter will be 3 days late this month. We plan to go live on April 4th. This is due to several hardware problems on the part of the editorial staff, as well as the couple of days lost when our server was in transit to it's new location. The April issue will have articles on:- OS/2 Warp 4 Merlin Convenience Pack
- Emacs 20.6.1 under OS/2 - Part II - Additional Setup
- Using the Toshiba PDR-M4 Digital Camera with OS/2 via USB
- Snakes and Hammers: Ogg Vorbis
- Networking FixPaks under OS/2 Warp
- The Free Files - Vol. 6 We make Music - Part 2
Finally, I received a very nice note of thanks from Dan Casey's parents today.
"Thank you very much for remembering our son Dan with your generous gifts to the Edelweis House. Though I don't know you, I feel a closeness through Dan, for he spoke often of his friends at VOICE. He was committed to that organization, and from the outpouring of email and condolences, he treasured your friendships. We feel the sorrow you have with us, but please know that we are truly comforted by your thoughtfulness.
Should "Warpers" ever convene in Indianapolis, we would love to welcome you to our family.
Most Sincerely,
Marguerite and Dan Casey"

- A message from Mark Dodel: Our server (which we have dubbed voice1) is now online again after a trip from North Carolina to Michigan. A big thank you to our SysAdmin, Abel McClendon, who pulled this off with only 2 days of downtime after we were blindsided with our former ISP closing down for construction work.
Voice1 is now safe and secure with Wilson Rook of Internet Walkabout (http://www.walkabout.org) in New Era, Michigan. Wilson runs a mix of operating systems, and he is quite comfortable running an OS/2 server. A big thank you to Wilson for stepping in to offer us a new home.
So if the DNS change has filtered through to you, you should now be able to access our websites (http://www.os2voice.org, http://www.warpdoctor.org and http://de.os2voice.org) and our mail lists and mail addresses.
We apologize for the inconvenience, and we hope you will bear with us a while longer. If you have attempted to subscribe or unsubscribe from any VOICE mailing lists over the past 2 days, you will most likely have to do this again. If you submitted a mail post to any VOICE address or mail list, you may want to resend it. Some went through some didn't. I am currently beginning to process a backlog of News list submissions. These will take some time as the News list is over 500 subscribers now.
We plan to expand services available to members in the coming months. So stay tuned, and join VOICE if you haven't already. It is the support of our members that makes these services available, including those free to the entire OS/2 community like our monthly newsletter (in both Engish and German), our News mailing list, The Hear our Voice list (help@os2voice.org) and the Warp Doctor site.
If anyone is interested in sponsorship, VOICE can use the revenue at this point to help defray the cost of services, which are currently being provided by Internet Walkabout. We can't continue to expect low cost services though. VOICE has gone without sponsorship for over 4 years now, other then the free site hosting by BMT/Falcon for several years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our members who fund VOICE's activities, and also those folks who contribute time and talent to the newsletter.
If you are ready to add your voice to that of the VOICE community, you can join online at http://www.os2voice.org/membership.html. For information on Sponorship, please see our sponsorship page at http://www.os2voice.org/sponsorinfo.html or contact our Marketing Representative Phil Butler at marketing@os2voice.org.

- From Mark Dodel: This is very difficult for me to write, so I will come to the point. Dan Casey has just passed away after a very short, but very serious illness.
Dan has been President of VOICE for 3 years now and most recently was elected to President of Warpstock within the past month. If that were all, he would be sorely missed, but Dan was a lot more then just a leader of two great OS/2 oriented organizations.
Dan was also one of the most helpful people in our small, close-knit community. He helped everyone that he could, and asked for nothing in return. What always amazed me most was that Dan wasn't an IT professional. He was a building contractor who just happened to love computers and of course OS/2. If he didn't know the answer he usually knew who might be able to help. He was Abraxas or DCasey on IRC. Dan was not one to put on airs, and he always had a kind word for just about everybody.
His passing is a major blow to VOICE, as he has been our strength, and the person either leading a project or helping with it. He was the main force behind our Warp Doctor site and our participation in the past three Warpstock events. He was deeply involved with our decision to purchase our own server. Dan was one of the most prolific contributors to our Newsletter.
At this point I'm not sure what else to say other then I am truly stunned and shocked at this. If anyone wants more information, all I can add at this point is the following:
He will be layed out tomorrow 2/22/01 from 4p - 8p at:Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home
1977 S. State Road 135
Greenwood, Indiana 46142
The funeral will take place on Friday, February 23rd.
Dan requested that any donations go to a fund for homeless children, but the exact details are not yet available. If anyone is interested please contact me and I will pass it on when I find out.
