It's been a while since the last XFolder version has been
released, but here is version 0.60 beta with lots of new
features. (Obviously, I have not ceased development of
XFolder, but I wanted to get these features done before
releasing the next version. Some people seem to have been
worried about XFolder's future already...)
The new version is available at:
http://www2.rz.hu-berlin.de/~h0444vnd/os2.htm
For those who are not familiar with XFolder yet: XFolder is
a collection of WPS replacement classes, adding a number of
those features to your Desktop which you've always missed (I
hope). Most importantly, you may freely configure your WPS
context menus without having to work your way through the
"Menu" settings pages. Moreover, XFolder adds hotkeys for
the most used folder functions.
New features in V0.60 beta:
-- XFolder can remove many more OS/2 default menu items.
-- All of XFolder's functions now work on the Desktop and
drive objects too.
-- Folders can carry their full path in their window
titles, which is now configurable INDIVIDUALLY for each
folder.
-- Auto-scroll folder Tree views to make appearing items
visible, i.e. if you expand a folder tree view, XFolder
scrolls the window exactly to the point to make as much of
what is appearing visible.
-- At last, there is an easy way to change the order of
XFolder context menu items: these are now displayed
according to the order in Details view.
-- Netscape is now started via my new "Netscape DDE
Interface", which is included in the package. Instead of
always starting a new Netscape instance for each URL to
open, which takes ages, this tool simply passes the URL to
Netscape by using Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE), and the
already running Netscape instance will open this URL. This
works for local files as well as Internet addresses, so you
might just as well use this tool as your default browser for
URL objects...
-- Extended Shutdown: XFolder now replaces the OS/2 default
shutdown sequence in order to allow cancelling shutdown,
displaying its progress, and skipping applications which are
not closing. You can also automatically reboot after
shutdown has completed.
-- Restart WPS (integrated into Desktop): does the same
procedure, but instead of shutting down, only the WPS will
be restarted. There have been a number of utilities allowing
to do this, but none of them (as far as I know) saved the
WPS's state before restarting it.
And lots of bugfixes and little enhancements. XFolder is now
fully multi-threaded too.
I hope this feature list makes up for the long wait for the
next XFolder version.
Note however that this is (again) a BETA VERSION. I am
releasing this version into the public to get feedback; it
is running fine on my system (and it is doing so every day),
but I cannot predict if any conflicts occur with whatever is
running on your system. XFolder has become quite complex by
now, and there may be sideeffects.
In a word: Make a WPS backup before installing.
Thanks for your interest, and feel free to drop me a mail
for comments and suggestions.
