SW: 20041205 kernels on Testcase

11 Dec 2004 16:48:18

Forwarded message from "Scott G." on Fri, 10 Dec 2004 18:21:50 UTC Posted
on: comp.os.os2.bugs

Put up new kernels. Not too much new. Backed out an os2ldr/os2dump change.
Left in the change that leaves out Pentium Pros (sorry to those folks).
Left in some changes to help some P4 systems boot properly.

-Scott

---END FORWARDED MESSAGE---

*** Warning *** Do NOT use these kernels on Pentium Pro systems.

[Moderator note: As always these are not officially supported by IBM
unless they tell you to use them.

Download from <ftp://testcase.boulder.ibm.com/ps/fromibm/os2/>

**** Please send any followup to comp.os.os2.bugs on usenet. ****

Also note that files are only on IBM's testcase for 2-3 days, so if you
want to try these get them now. Make certain you back up any files
replaced and don't try these on a production system. Read any readme file
before applying any changes. If your system is working well, and you have
no problems addressed by these updates, do yourself a favour and don't
mess with this. You have been warned.

The UNI and SMP files are for WSeB/ACP/eCS Pro (SMP kernel) and the W4
files are for post FP15/MCP versions, including eComStation. Only use the
SMP kernel on a machine with more then one CPU.]

From the readme file:

20041105 14.100e
****** WARNING: Do NOT use this version on a Pentium Pro machine.
For the benefit of everyone else, I have temporarily removed a
workaround for a P-Pro chip bug. This will improve performance
under heavy load by a few percent for all other machines by
correctly aligning the IDT entry.

JR20486 More sys3175 during bootup on Pentium 4s (and maybe Opterons?)
with >512mb of RAM

- changedd vmco_s to be 8 bytes instead of 5. This will break tools that
depended on that length and will use an extra 184kb of resident memory.
However, it greatly speeds up some memory management operations.

20041210 14.100g
****** SEE WARNING UNDER 20041105

JR20486 (again): Even more P4-related changes. Athlon64 likely still not
working reliably (or supported).
- os2dump and os2ldr LBA changes in 20041105 backed out
- *Very* small timing hole caused trap 3 in SwitchNPX

HW: Testers Needed! Verizon PCMCIA Internet Card drivers

09 Dec 2004 23:32:45

From: "Mark Abramowitz"

Testers Needed for Verizon Wireless PC5220 PCMCIA Card Drivers

Yes, you heard right! eComStation-OS/2 drivers have been developed for
Verizon Wireless PC5220 cards. This PCMCIA card allows direct access to
the Internet from your laptop at up to broadband speeds on Verizon
Wireless' network.

Be the second or third or ? person in the world to use this card under eCS
(sorry, I'm the first). We need folks to test these drivers on a range of
laptops. So if you have this card, and are using it under the only
Verizon-supported operating system, you can now help us test it under eCS.

This technology is new and emerging, and eCS users will soon be able to be
at the front of the pack.

To become a tester, contact Mark Abramowitz at markaDESPAM@relaypoint.net.
Let us know what version of eCS or OS/2 you're running, and what hardware
you'll be running it under.

SW: Offer for paid port of "DOS Box" to OS/2

08 Dec 2004 09:47:37

From: "Christian Hennecke"

In the OS2.org web forum, Martin Klingenfuß is searching for someone to
port the DOS emulator "DOS Box" (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net) to OS/2.
Mr. Klingenfuß personally offers a payment of EUR 500 and encourages other
people to sponsor the project.

" DOSBox is a DOS-emulator that uses the SDL-library which makes DOSBox
very easy to port to different platforms. DOSBox has already been ported
to many different platforms, such as Windows, BeOS, Linux, MacOS X...

DOSBox also emulates CPU:286/386 realmode/protected mode, Directory
FileSystem/XMS/EMS, Tandy/Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA/VESA graphics, a
SoundBlaster/Gravis Ultra Sound card for excellent sound compatibility
with older games...

You can "re-live" the good old days with the help of DOSBox, it can run
plenty of the old classics that don't run on your new computer!

DOSBox is totally free of charge and OpenSource."

To qualify as successful, the ported application needs to offer the same
features as the Windows version. The developer would have to publish the
source code and, if possible, be available for further maintenance of the
project.

People who want to sponsor the project should donate at least EUR 20 to
make it worthwhile. Mr. Klingenfuß guarantees a refund in case the project
should fail.

OT: IBM's PC business bought by Lenovo.

08 Dec 2004 08:33:10

From: "Mark Dodel"

Forwarded message from Brad BARCLAY on Wed, 8 Dec 2004 03:45:10 UTC

Posted on: comp.os.os2.misc

Hey Everyone:

Well, it happened:

http://news.com.com/IBM+sells+PC+group+to+Lenovo/2100-1042_3-5482284.html?tag=st_lh

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/12/08/0314207&tid=136&tid=187&tid=98&tid=1

IBM's PC business has been bought out by Lenovo of China for $1.25
billion USD (Lenovo is also taking on IBM's debt). IBM is getting a
18.9% stake in Lenovo, and Lenovo gets to use the IBM and Think names for
the next five years.

Only time will tell what this means for OS/2 users. IBM could in theory
continue to sell PCs under its brand name that are manufactured by other
companies (IBM has been doing this for some lines for several years now),
in which case it could mean little or nothing.

Mag: OS/2 e-Zine Next Issue available

08 Dec 2004 08:09:52

From: os2editorDESPAM@yahoo.ca

The next issue of OS/2 e-Zine is up. Yes, I know, technically it's over a
month late, I couldn't wait for final edits on a few articles any longer,
so it's a short one this month. The December issue will likely be shorter
too, unless I get a last minute deluge of publish-ready articles. (As the
last OS2 VOICE newsletter alluded to, sometimes the submissions take a
real effort to prepare, especially "dirty" HTML).

This month we have:
- Golden Code Development's Java 1.4.1
- Keyboard Input from A to Ä - Part 2
- Redeveloping a web site with PPWizard (Part 5): Cascading Style Sheets

We keep going! We'll go away only when OS/2 does!

Net: Warpstock 2004 Survey reminder

07 Dec 2004 15:02:39

From: "Gordon Snider"

Sorry for the spam, but I really believe this deserves some attention...

There are only a few days left in which to participate in the Warpstock
2004 post event poll. For us to get an adequate gauge of what's been
right, wrong, or just needs changing, it is imperative that we get as
many responses as possible. From the initial poll announcement:

The Board of Directors of Warpstock, Inc. would appreciate feedback on
how you feel we have done putting on Warpstock in North America. We want
to hear from you whether or not you attended Warpstock 2004 or previous
Warpstock events.

If you came to Warpstock in October, was there anything you particularly
liked or disliked about the event? If you did not attend, was there
anything we could have done to change your mind? We want to know so we
can plan for an even better event in 2005 -- and beyond.

Please take a few minutes and tell us what you think by answering our
post-Warpstock poll before December 15, 2004 at
http://www.warpstock.org/cgi-bin/vpp1.cmd?pollname=postws2004

In the near future, we will follow this poll up with at least one more to
obtain more specific data related to organizing the next event.

If you want to find out more about Warpstock please visit our web site
http://www.warpstock.org where you will find information about our
organization and the past eight Warpstock events.

SW: NVU 0.60 uploaded

06 Dec 2004 12:05:20

Forwarded message from "Peter Weilbacher" on Mon, 6 Dec 2004 01:42:53 UTC
Posted on: news://secnews.netscape.com/netscape.public.mozilla.os2

Hi all,

I am pleased to announce availability of NVU 0.60, compiled for OS/2,
from the builds webpage in my signature (you may have to explicitely
reload the frame to get the new content). NVU (pronounced N-view) is the
next generation Mozilla webpage composer, developed mainly by Daniel
Glazman.

Tell me (mozilla at weilbacher.org) if you see problems on OS/2
especially if you do not see them on another platform. And take a look at
the file ReadMe.OS2. Have fun with the new version!

[ I hope the German translation is coming in the next days from Thorsten
Fritz, keep an eye on <http://www.mozilla.nightrat.net/nvu/>. ]

Changelog from 0.50 to 0.60 (from
http://www.nvu.com/download.html):
* still based on Mozilla 1.7.1
* rulers completely rewritten to fix big bugs and allow simulation
of vertical text in the vertical ruler
* Site Manager completely rewritten to allow editing of more than one
site at the same time and fix a lot of bugs
* Site Manager can now display the system's default icon on Windows and
linux (KDE only for the moment)
* Hiding and showing again the site manager now preserves its contents
* dragging an image from a linux file browser and dropping it onto Nvu's
editing area now inserts the image into the document. Other files
generate a link. In the past, only the text "file://..." corresponding
to the url of the object was inserted into the document
* too many bug fixes to list them all

Known Issues
* internal links to the help viewer don't work well and often launch an
external browser
* the -edit command line option still does not work correctly. v0.7
should be based on Firefox 1.0, that will solve this problem.
