INFO: Update: OS/2 Tinderbox Amazon Honor Page

22 Jan 2005 18:55:57

Just to answer some questions about why there is a request for donations
to purchase a system for Mozilla for OS/2 development.

Tinderbox is part of the Mozilla development process.
http://www.mozilla.org/tinderbox.html "Essentially, Tinderbox is a
detective tool. It allows you to see what is happening in the source tree.
It shows you who checked in what (by asking Bonsai); what platforms have
built successfully; what platforms are broken and exactly how they are
broken (the build logs); and the state of the files that made up the build
(cvsblame) so you can figure out who broke the build, so you can do the
most important thing, hold them accountable for their actions."

IBM has stopped its support of Mozilla for OS/2. Any further development
will have to be from volunteers. IBM no longer provides a machine for
Mozilla apps to be compiled so future versions would have to come from
another source. Mike Kaply was the lead developer for the IBM team. He
has offered to continue to compile official versions of Mozilla based apps
for OS/2 if he has a machine to do so, hense the request for contributions
to purchase a system.

I have no relationship to the Mozilla development team other than as a
happy user of the FireFox web browser. For OS/2 and eComStation to remain
a viable platform we will need current versions of FireFox, Thunderbird
and any other potential Mozilla based applications. For specific
questions related to Mozilla for OS/2 development I suggest you post them
on the Mozilla for OS/2 Usenet group

All funds will go toward creating an OS/2 Tinderbox/nightly machine.

If I get extra funds, they will probably go toward mozilla.org if that's
OK.

We now have access back to OS/2 e-zine. The owners of OS/2 e-zine (BMT

Unfortunately, the forums are still not available but we're working on it.

Until then, please enjoy the much delayed issue, and a new issue will be
out hopefully shortly after.

21 Jan 2005 08:44:48

From: Christian Langanke

Hi,

I just released a new version, including support for 20x20 pixel bitmaps.
I think this should solve all feedback issues, as it is much better
visible.

Also for manual TPC/IP configuration now DNS configuration values can be
specified.

Please see revision history in the INF for details!

bye, Christian

SW: Correction: Single Mouse Device Driver updated on IBM OS/2 DDPakOnline

19 Jan 2005 21:37:07

From: madodelDESPAM@ptdprolog.net

Though the OS/2 DDPakOnline site lists the smouse as updated, the version
linked to from that site is in fact an older version from 07-04-2004.

According to Achain:

New smouse.exe can be found through "IBM Support & Download".
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/search.wss?q=OS%2F2+single+mouse+device+driver
It requres IBM ID (= Passport Advantage subscription) to step inside,
however.

SW: New Larsen Commander Beta #8

18 Jan 2005 15:18:50

From: leifelDESPAM@online.no

Today (January 18 2005) Leif Erik Larsen has released version 1.6 beta #8
of his popular GUI file manager and command shell, Larsen Commander.

Larsen Commander is a powerful GUI file manager and command shell with a
traditional look and feel inspired by the classic Norton Commander. It
combines the best of two very different worlds; - the command line and the
file management panels. Both available at the same time, even in parallel
while one or more commands are running in the background!

Larsen Commander is available at

http://home.online.no/~leifel/lcmd/index.html

New features:

- Further implementation of ZIP file support. The internal viewer can now
view files directly from ZIP files.

- Added various "Self Test" commands to the Help-menu. These are
programatic tests of various parts of the Larsen Commander code. It is
used to verify the stability of Larsen Commander on the target system.
Users don't usually need to care about this. More tests are to be
implemented in the future. These Self Test commands will probably be
available in beta versions of Larsen Commander only.

- OS/2: "Delete to Trashcan" now works. (Puh, that was a hard one.)
Requires XWorkPlace or some other trashcan extension, though. However,
this will probably not work on Warp 3. If it does, please let me know.

- Added acknowledgements to the About-box.

Bug fixes:

- Internal text editor was still unable to open e.g. log-files that are
open by other processes. Fixed.

- Ctrl+W did not always open the WPS Folder in the foreground.

- Holding Ctrl+R down sometimes causes exception "Workerthread already in
action".

- Default width of the filename column was not always correctly
calculated in FULL mode.

- GUI message GM_DISMISSDIALOG was not sent to child components of e.g.
GTabbedPanel. Causing various problems with the options-dialog for option
pages depending on that message. For instance, the file filter options was
silently ignored. Fixed.

- "Free drive space" in info-panel and statusbar cell was never updated.

- Size of "small" files miscalculated by one byte.

- Attempt to move or copy a file that was already removed by some other
application in the background was silently ignored. Now displays an error
message with "Skip" and Abort" buttons, where "Skip" is the default.

- OS/2: Every time a file was dragged from LCmd over a window where
DragText handles d&d, DragText gave a beep to indicate an error. Thanks to
Rich Walsh for pointing out this bug.

- Windows: Listbox items painted at corrupt y-position when a horizontal
scrollbar was visible.

- Unstable directory cache. E.g. Typing "cd attempt" could match while
"cd att" did not match. This is now fixed and speed optimized.

- Windows: Thin border around current selected file item was sometimes
painted with a dotted line.

Improvements:

- Dramatically improved the speed of reloading filename items when
current file panel directory contains a huge number of files and at least
some of them was tagged/marked.

- Further implementation of ZIP file support. Command "Calculate Dir
Size" now works within ZIPs.

- Polished the file delete progress dialog somewhat.

- Improved exception handling in background worker threads.

SW: GCC 3.3.5-beta4.

17 Jan 2005 15:19:41

From: madodelDESPAM@ptdprolog.net

A new beta level update of GCC is on Netlabs FTP site
ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/GCC-3.3.5-beta4.zip

GCC is a distribution of the GNU C/C++ compiler suite and associated
utilities for the IBM OS/2 platform.

Innotek website for GCC for OS/2:
http://www.innotek.de/products/gccos2/gccos2general_e.html

"If you have any questions regarding the compiler we recommend to join the
UnixOS2 mailinglist:

http://unixos2.org/pages/MailingLists.html

There is also a web interface at gmane.org:

http://news.gmane.org/gmane.os.os2.unixos2 "

The ReleaseNote.os2 for this release states:

"GCC v3.3.5 / LIBC v0.6 - Beta 4:
--------------------------------

Thanks to Lorne, Froloff and nickk for sending me patches,
debugging problems and testing fixes.

New features:

o Added st_dev and st_ino calculation for fstat and stat.

o Added most of the wide string functions.
N.B. the stream functions are still missing.

o New functions:
SafeDosStartSession(), wcscat(), wcschr(), wcscmp(),
wcscoll(), wcscpy(), wcscspn(), wcslcat(), wcslcpy(),
wcslen(), wcsncat(), wcsncmp(), wcsncpy(), wcspbrk(),
wcsrchr(), wcsspn(), wcsstr(), wcstok() and wcswidth()

Bug fixes:

o settimeofday() year problem.

o Some underflow/overflow problems tested for by many
Configure scripts was fixed by using a 64-bit time
type internally.

o fxsave/fxrstore problem in fork(). (This isn't tested
because lack of (reliable) obsolete hardware.)

o Fixed fork() and DosLoadModule problem in child.

o nl_langinfo(CODESET) now returns something useful,
adding a few ascii codeset aliases at the same time.

o Bug in socket inheritance over exec/spawn.

o Missing semphore and signal blocking when processing
external signals.

o Two rmdir errno problems, and made it fail on symlink.

o Fixed incorrect monetary locale for the "C" locale
after setlocale call.

o Fixed signal queue node leak.

o Fixed missing release of signal semaphore and signal
unblocking in a failure code path.

o Fixed a few filehandle conversion bugs in os2_select.

o Fixed libsocket to set errno to ENOSOCK when given a
filehandle instead of a socket. Previous was ENOSYS.

o Corrected NP_NBLK define in os2emx.h.

o Export __mcount stub. LIBCxx.prf export non-stub.

o Added missing libdl stub libraries (dlfcn is in libc
as of last release).

o Fixed missing WNOHANG handling in the wait functions.

o Adjusted the ECHILD and EINVAL errnos usage in
the wait functions to match the waitpid() spec.

o ???

Todos before LIBC06.DLL:

0. Fix all bugs. :-)

1. Reimplement opendir in BSD style (+fchdir).

2. Shared IPC structures for XSI msq, sem and shm.

3. Missing job pgid functions.

4. Port GLIBC intl/*. gettext is a pita! because it's
passing FILE pointers around between different LIBCs.
objdump is constantly broken between LIBC versions.

5. Figure out the EA exclusive read access trouble.

6. Calc ino_t on file creation and store it in EAs.

7. Some sysctl() required for coreutils + a bit
of tcpip additions.

8. adjtime() implementation."

SW: PMM2TB: Conversion PMMail to Thunderbird

17 Jan 2005 14:21:39

From: Kenn Yuill

As you can see from the header, this note was posted on the PMMail-List
from Blueprint Software Works
and may be of interest to
some readers. I cannot comment on the efficiency of this utility as I
have not tried it.

-------- Original Message --------

Hi,

I wrote a small tool named PMM2TB to convert all PMMail messages and the
address book to a format Thunderbird (and Mozilla) can import.

It's free, give it a try:

SW: PMSheet German version

16 Jan 2005 20:50:25

Forwarded message from jasper on Sun, 16 Jan 2005 19:04:15 UTC Posted on:
comp.os.os2.apps

FYI,

PMSheet is translated into german and can be downloaded from it's
homepage.

http://home-5.worldonline.nl/~jdekeij/pmsheet.html

Jasper

---END FORWARDED MESSAGE---

"PMSHEET is a file explorer like program, showing at the left a directory
tree and at the right the images in the selected directory. The images are
shown as thumbnails. The size of the thumbnails can be varied in three
different sizes, small, medium and large. A very important property of the
program is that almost any action can be done by the keyboard thereby
minimizing the dependancy of the mouse. Each thumbnail uses a maximum of
10 kb. The program support the standard drag & drop of OS/2 Warp, even the
tree at the right accepts dropped files. This makes it easy to maintain
your image folders. On the images simple functions can be applied like
rotating, zooming and slideshow of sellected images etc. The program comes
with online help. Last but not least, it is freeware.

Supported formats

Format Description
GIF Compuserve Interchange format

TIFF Tagged Imgae File Format

Net: OS/2 e-Zine down

16 Jan 2005 20:22:25

From: os2editorDESPAM@yahoo.ca

The next issue of OS/2 e-zine should have been up a long time ago already,
but our servers seem to be down. (You can still access the current issue,
but no forums and I cannot upload the new issues).

Hopefully this is temporary. In the meantime, I will upload a .ZIP copy to
hobbes whenever FTP access to _that_ comes back up! (My FTP is not broken,
I can FTP anywhere else).

If anyone wants a copy _right now_, I'd be happy to e-mail you one. :-)

Thanks for your patience.

SW: eRedMan Version 0.9.beta.8

16 Jan 2005 10:21:52

From: Herwig Bauernfeind

This is the next public beta release of eRedMan, a pipe redirection
manager for eComStation and OS/2. It is a general pipe redirection
utility (like printmon.exe or print2ps.cmd that comes with ePDF). Its
equivalent in the Windows world is RedMon.

eRedMan is able to monitor multiple pipes and associate one program to a
each pipe and execute that program, whenever data was written to the pipe.

What is new in this beta? Quite a lot.

+Added: GhostScript Printer Assistent to help users when setting up a
GhostScript driven PostScript printer queue for a non-PostScript printer.
By doing so you will (probably) be able to overcome printing problems
with OpenOffice for OS/2.
+Added: Optionally detach programs (and thus run them invisibly in the
background)
+Added: Intelligence to help user when configuring eRedMan with ePDF.
+Added: /SETUP:ePDF switch to configure eRedMan automagically for ePDF.
+Added: /MAKEOBJ switch to create an eRedMan object in the startup
folder.
*Changed: Added a lot of stuff to the help file (so finally it should be
useful).

Known problems and limitations:

* Usage in conjunction with VPC is still problematic, although not as
serious as it was with previous releases. This is under investigation.
More feedback is required here.

Feedback is appreciated. Contact me by email in case of problems.
