Mar 13, 1998, This post about the imminent release of Lotus's Smart Suite for OS/2 Warp 4.0 was found on comp.os.os2.apps:

We went Gold today, begin manufacturing CD-ROMs next week, and will be shipping SmartSuite for OS/2 Warp 4 to vendors the following week (no later than 3/27). Check out the "News" page of the SmartSuite for OS/2 Web site at http://www.lotus.com/smartsuiteos2 (the "News" link is at the bottom of the page). I believe you'll find it says:

"The Global English edition of SmartSuite for OS/2 Warp 4 will ship at the end of March, 1998, followed by the release of:
- German, Global French and Danish editions mid-April
- Global Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, and Dutch editions in early June"

Next, visit our "OS/2 Links" page. There you'll find a list of software resellers who plan to offer SmartSuite for OS/2 Warp 4. Finally, check out our "Downloads" page. There you'll find advance copies of each of the SmartSuite for OS/2 Warp 4 books in Adobe Acrobat format. The README files (Release Notes) shipping with the Suite will be posted later this month.

Does that help?

Mar 12, 1998, News from Chris Graham, of WarpSpeed Computers and author of the Graham Utilities for OS/2:

Re: My new address details.

Well, as you may or may not know, last thursday, we finally managed to more into our new home. No hot water that day, and still a few things to do, but what the hell... <G>

After the first builder going bankrupt (on my 31st birthday of all things!) and the new one giving us just as much hell by not being overly responsive to our position (after 11 years in the same flat/unit the owner of the flat wants to sell so we _HAD_ to move out (but we manager to extend by a week)) we are finally in. [Just an aside to anyone who doesn't know better (both we and the salesman didn't): A 230 Litre hot water server is not really a hot water service that holds 230L. It actually holds about 145L of hot water in reserve - the 230 comes from the fact that it can HEAT 230 litres of water PER HOUR. Not much good to fill a 200+ litre Spa... :-(. So, don't get caught like we did! <G>]

Anyway, these are all of our new contact details.

Mar 11, 1998, The Unofficial Netscape Navigator for OS/2 site- http://people.netscape.com/law/os2nav/index.html has been updated today, March 11th. They announced that some pages are now translated to Swedish and more importantly the site maintainer Bill Law gives some information about Netscape/IBM's plans for the release of OS2 specific release 5.0 code. Bill states: 'This page contains some random thoughts on the topic of what I've cleverly named "Warpzilla." Warpzilla is an OS/2 port of the "freely released" Netscape Communicator v5.0 source code, AKA Mozilla.'

In order to help testers of the Win32Os2 project, a web site has been set up by PowerDale IT Ltd at http://www.yoursite.co.uk/os/2/

It is a database of peoples' experiences with converting applications. Should you have any luck with converting an application, need to check if an application can be converted or want to report that an application does not convert, this is the resource for you.

ps. We are not part of the Win32OS2 development group please do not direct questions regarding the project to our account.

Mar 6, 1998, Dr. Martinus reports on the OS2-L:

There is a survey about which OS you'd like to boot up in the year 2000. The people who maintain the site are anti-Windows, but also not pro-OS/2, so you find quite a lot of Linux and DOS choices. The survey started on 3rd of March. Have a look there, and make your choice:

Mar 8, 1998, From Brad Wardell of Stardock:

Stardock prepares to make Entrepreneur widely available

Near the end of last Fall, Stardock released Entrepreneur 1.0 and it immediately became popular with strategy game fans all over the world. But Entrepreneur was only released in select areas. Due to the game s unusual game mechanics, Stardock was uncertain of how well it would be received and held back its general availability until after it could receive initial feedback.

Entrepreneur is a real-time strategy game in which players start their own companies and must compete against others in a chosen market. By balancing their resources between marketing, researching, and manufacturing, the players grow their hold on the world until they have conquered the vast majority of the market. One Usenet player described it as "SimBillGates" though its emphasis on making tough resource choices makes it similar to Civilization.

The games lead designer, Brad Wardell, says he was inspired to develop Entrepreneur not by Civilization so much but by a classic game called MULE. "I had been hesitant on developing Entrepreneur because I figured that someone else would eventually create a good follow-on to a game like MULE." Said Brad Wardell, Stardock Systems, Inc. "Though in actuality, the game also has a lot of elements of a lesser known game called Lords of Conquest." To Stardock s relief, Entrepreneur 1.0 has received universal praise from the mainstream print magazines such as Computer Gaming World, Strategy Plus, and PC Gamer. The magazines pointed out the game s addictive game play, outstanding computer AI, and unique strategic elements help combine into making a very good game.

One unexpected chain of events have gone into Entrepreneur s favor: Microsoft and the Justice Department. With the object of Entrepreneur to take over the market using extremely ruthless tactics and one of the computer players called "MitroSoft", Entrepreneur has caught the attention of the general press.

With articles from the Wallstreet Journal, Business Week, and Corporate Detroit and TV mentions on NBC Today and The Nightly Business Report Stardock has suddenly found it has a hit on its hands.

"We re getting a lot of calls from the press about Entrepreneur and how it plays like Microsoft would," said Wardell. "We wrote the game in the days of the OS-wars DOS vs. Windows vs. OS/2 vs. Mac and it did influence our development considerably. All I can say is, Yea, Microsoft plays to win and I m sure there are a lot of people out there who want to play a game in which they crush their opponents in a somewhat real-world scenario." But Stardock hasn't been sitting on its laurels since its original release, it used the time between 1.0 and now to address the feedback received from the early reviews as well as from gamers. While the reviewers praised the game itself, they also pointed out that the game s steep learning curve and very dry graphics might turn off some players. To that end, Stardock worked on enhancing those two areas of Entrepreneur.

Entrepreneur 1.1, due to be generally available on Wednesday, March 11, brings a complete graphics face lift to Entrepreneur (see included screen shots of 1.0 and a similar 1.1 screen shot). It also made subtle playability enhancements to make the game more intuitive to beginners while maintaining the challenge for expert players. The computer players, already considered amongst the best in the genre, have been heavily enhanced and will continue to be enhanced well into the future.

The game ships with a single market module the computer market, to play in. Stardock used the time between 1.0 and now to work on two new markets that will be available in late March. Moreover, the game ships with over a dozen different maps to play on and Stardock plans to release several new maps in the coming weeks.

The free multi-player service that comes with Entrepreneur, Stardock.Net will also get a free Windows client so that users can not only launch multi-player games from within Entrepreneur itself but also launch games from a small GUI client. "With the Stardock.Net client, people will be able to keep a little window up on their desktop and chat with people and wait for just the right game to start instead of having to keep Entrepreneur loaded all the time." Said Wardell.

Stardock expects Entrepreneur to be available in the following stores by March 11 or soon after:

CompUSA (March 11)
Micro Center (March 11)
Future Shop (March 11)
United CD ROM (March 11)
Babbages (Late March)
Software Etc. (Late March)
Fry's (Late March)
Electronic's Boutique (Late March)

Stardock can be reached at 1-800-672-2338. Entrepreneur lists for $49.95, requires Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, or OS/2 Warp to play and 8 megabytes of memory on a 486DX2-66 or better system.

Entrepreneur 1.1 update will be available FREE to all 1.0 users on Stardock's website on March 11.

Stardock s website is http://www.stardock.com

Mar 8, 1998, From a post by Felmon John Davis on the OS2-L:

People who want updates on Opera for OS/2, for MAC, et al., might have a look at http://opera.nta.no/alt_os.html.

Here's the quotation about OS/2:

---- quoted stuff----
OS/2: I leave it uncommented:

"Opera/2 is coming along fine we have about 75% of the code provided to us is now compiling with only minor changes to the header files. 10% are C++ class problems (due to the difference in compilers) - we are working on this. 5% are unsupported API's; the remaining 10% we haven't had time to fully go over yet. We spent a few days doing a down and dirty port to get an idea of the problems involved and are now doing a proper port (with the #ifdef etc..), and will be providing these to Opera within the next few days.

Mar 5, 1998, Here's some good news from Tom Rowe about Lotus's eSuite software which has been reported to only run on NT and AIX.

"I'm in Chicago for a DB2 class, and while here I saw a bit of the WSoD road show. Guess what, Lotus e-suite server running on Warp Server. Guess Lotus's web site is very misleading."

Mar 5, 1998, From IBM's Update News site http://ps.boulder.ibm.com/pbin-usa-ps/getobj.pl?/pdocs-usa/java114.html

Important Java 1.1.4 Install Information

If Java version 1.1.4 for OS/2 is installed over OS/2 FixPak 6, some files will be overwritten and downleveled.

To avoid this, please install Java 1.1.4 prior to installing this FixPak, or please reinstall this FixPak after installing Java 1.1.4.

The above warning is included in the WARP 4 FixPak 6 ReadMe. The same warning will also apply to later WARP 4 FixPaks. The files that are overwritten include the changes made for EuroCurrency support.

Mar 5, 1998, Some news of new functionality in the recently released FixPack 6 for Warp 4.0 and FixPack 35 for Warp 3.0 from IBM's Update news site - http://ps.boulder.ibm.com/pbin-usa-ps/getobj.pl?/pdocs-usa/newfp6.html and http://ps.boulder.ibm.com/pbin-usa-ps/getobj.pl?/pdocs-usa/newfp35.html

NEW FUNCTIONS added to FixPak 6

It is our policy not to include new function in FixPaks. However, as with any policy there may be exceptions. If any exception occurs in the future, we will communicate them to you in the README.1ST of a FixPak.

PARTITIONED REMOVABLE MEDIA SUPPORT

With the popularity of the new SCSI Syquest Syjet 1.5 GB portable and Iomega Jaz 1 GB and 2 GB personal hard drives, OS/2 Warp extends the support of these removable hard drives with caching HPFS and FAT file systems. These large removable drives are ideal for file transfers, backups, archiving confidential data and on-line storage. By updating your OS/2 system to Warp V400 FixPak 6 you will be able to fully exploit these large drives and manage your data efficiently and effectively. For Warp Server Advanced HPFS386 support you additionally need LAN Server SelectPack IP_8508. HPFS386 is not supported with any LAN Server products prior to Warp Server. The following are new features:

Ability to divide removable media into multiple partitions (Iomega Zip ATA drives are
supported with single partition media only)
Ability to format with either HPFS or FAT
Ability to exploit caching performance
Ability to use HPFS long file names
Ability to have drag/drop capability through the Workplace drive icon
Operating system protection to safely eject media through software eject utility
Assignment of drive letters to end of drive lettering chain to prevent floating drive letters
Single drive letter will be assigned for media if the drive is initialized with no media present
Ability to predetermine a fixed number of partitions to use for removable media
Enabling of vendor supplied media protection utilities

See README.RMS on the first FixPak diskette for additional information.

EUROCURRENCY

The European Monetary Union is creating the euro as a new common currency for Europe. As part of this effort the European Commission has introduced a new character which represents the euro. This character looks like an uppercase C with two horizontal lines through it. The euro will come into existence on January 1, 1999 for use in banking. Euro notes and coins will be issued starting January 2002. See http://europa.eu.int/euro for details.

The OS/2 basic support for Euro consists of adding the euro character to fonts, codepages, and keyboards. The euro is added to all display and ATM fonts. It is added at codepoint 0xd5 to codepage 850 and 857, and to codepoint 0x80 in the Windows codepages. The euro is added to all western European keyboards and the US International keyboard. It is placed at ALTGR-e or ALTGR-4 on these keyboards. The euro is not supported in WinOS2.

Feb 21, 1998 - From a post on Warpcast:
I'm proud to announce the first LIMITED beta test for GIMP/2.

We need some testers:

- you MUST HAVE a running XFree86 installed! Please do not mail us if XFree86 is not installed on your computer!

- you should know GIMP (the Linux version). But I think most of us don't know it yet, so you should be at least very interested in exploring the GIMP/2! We have to check a lot of things, and be sure that you _will_ find bugs in this version!

- you have to contact the programmers, so you should be able to describe the problems you've got with the GIMP port!

If you think you are able to support us in beta testing, please send a mail to ktk@netlabs.org. I will tell you more details about the limited beta test.

For more informations about GIMP, please visit http://www.netlabs.org/gimp.html

(For new users: GIMP is a great image-manipulation program, it's like Photoshop, but it's FREE!)
