PMView v1.05 is now available at:

ftp://ftp.bmtmicro.com/bmtmicro/pmvw105.zip

Localized versions are also available:
German: ftp://ftp.bmtmicro.com/bmtmicro/pmvw105de.zip
Spanish: ftp://ftp.bmtmicro.com/bmtmicro/pmvw105es.zip
French: ftp://ftp.bmtmicro.com/bmtmicro/pmvw105fr.zip

The following bugs and problems are fixed in PMView 1.05.

1. Transform/Size: The "Keep proportional" setting is ignored for all the
fixed sizes.
2. Loading, TIFF: TIFF files with right-to-left line orientation are not
correctly rendered.
3. Loading, TIFF: PMView fails to read some variants of TIFF files with
a tiled image layout.
4. File Open/Save dialogs: A file filter such as "*.JPG" excludes files
with multiple dots (e.g. "TEST.JPG-1.JPG").
5. Shift-PgUp/Shift-PgDn/Shift-Home/Shift-End don't work when using the
keys on the numeric keypad and NumLock is off.
6. Installer: When installing PMView, it is now automatically registered
as the default viewer for Warp 4. (It is no longer needed to run
SETDEFV.CMD to do this).

Best regards,
Peter Nielsen

Dear friends of XFolder,

V0.85 is out. Except for new cool WPS boot logos, there's not much new stuff to it. But I've finally managed to fix those darn status bar crashes that have annoyed so many people, so you might want to give this a try.

Bochs (an IBM 80x86 emulator) is progressing along very quickly, with more features added in every day. The creator of Bochs, Kevin Lawton, is now adding dynamic translation into the Bochs cpu core, which should give it over a 10x performance improvement over the current incarnation.

Bochs/2 for OS/2 Warp, ported by Craig Ballantyne, is also getting additional features rapidly added to it. I have been speaking with Craig, and he has so far added direct printer access, floppy access, with more direct hardware access on the way, such as giving Bochs direct access to the video card. These improvements along with the dynamic translation, should give OS/2 users the ability to run Windows 95/98 fast enough for some tasks. Craig's web site is located at http://www.guisoft-corp.com. Bochs is available for many different platforms such as Windows, OS/2, Linux, BeOS, Macintosh 68k/PPC, and several more ports that have been written since the incarnation of Bochs. The Bochs homepage is located at http://www.bochs.com.

After reading my previous announcement about CopyShop, I realized the old url at www.gate.net/~stidev has the following notice:

--
STI's web page has changed effective February 10, 1999. The new URL is http://www.stiscan.com
--

Please go to this new URL for updated information about STI Twain and related products. (It's not simply a new domain that points to the same site, these are two different web servers, so the content in gate.net is outdated).

Webmasters are also encouraged to change all links to sti twain to http://www.stiscan.com

PR Newswire #1256

Serenity Systems Offers Free PCs to Participating Businesses

Serenity Systems (http://www.Serenity-Systems.com), a technology startup in north Texas, has taken the step that everyone knew had to happen. They are offering "free PCs" to customers who are users of their services. Recently some organizations have developed programs to give PCs to consumers, but this seems to be the first national program to provide PCs to businesses. And the company is not limiting the number of PCs required by participating organizations. However, a business must sign up for a PC desktop services management contract.

According to Bob St.John, Director of New Business Development with the company, "People in our industry appreciate that the cost of acquiring a PC is small compared to the total cost of ownership. That inolves managing users, recovering from failures, and this year the biggest emphasis is on deploying new software to users, a very expensive procedure.

"Software deployment is being driven by Y2K concerns, but the fact is software changes and upgrades have become such a recurring task that there really is no let up to the problem in sight. And Y2K requires hardware and software which both comply with Y2K standards. Our services are directed at those Total Cost of Ownership issues. Frankly, it costs less to provide the PC than to bring the wide range existing systems a company may have into Y2K compliance."

Serenity Systems provides hardware, software and services directed at managing any or all tasks associated with business PCs. This is the ultimate step in the "outsourcing" trend of the '90s which saw companies retaining outside service organizations to install and manage their internal computing environment. In addition to Managed PC Client Systems, Serenity Systems is also Computing Telephony Integration vendor, supplying commercial voice mail and voice response systems.

"Our direction this year is to integrate the business PC and the business telephone, two business tools you tend to find on every desk, but which tend to exist as parallel universes. The biggest favor we could do for computers users is let their phones by managed by the PCs which can provide more function at less cost." said St.John

Announcing TimeKeeper/2!

TimeKeeper/2 is a program that retrieves Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) from a time server using time protocol RFC868 and compares the results to your system time and optionally updates your system time if necessary.

TimeKeeper/2 can even be configured to adjust for Daylight Saving Time if you provide your time zone information in the program settings.

TimeKeeper/2 has a set of predefined NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) servers which are synchronized with an atomic clock. When TimeKeeper/2 is installed, a server is automatically selected for you and may be changed at any time if you wish to use a different predefined server. If you have a preferred time server that is not in the preconfigured list there is an option to add servers.

TimeKeeper/2 is ideal for keeping your system time and date as accurate as possible and makes a nice addition to your Startup folder.

Greetings from Yokohama, Japan.

I have released a new version (beta 0.05) of VNC viewer for OS/2 PM.

This is a bug fixed version of a previous release (beta 0.04). CTL/ALT status windows (on title-bar) does not work correctly with programs customizing the title-bar (such as CandyBarZ, Xit!).

You can get the VNC viewer for PM at:

http://www.sra.co.jp/people/akira/os2/index-e.html

or directly,

VNC is a system to access remote desktops from a local machine. It consists of a remote server and a local viewer (client). This release is the viewer for OS/2 PM. For more details see:

Hello.

I needed to display some STL files, but found nothing that would do this in OS/2. So I built a simple app to solve this.

You can find it on Hobbes in the incoming directory (should move to /pub/os2/apps/graphics/viewers) as stlview.zip

It is quite rudimentary and not a finished and polished product, but it works. It is freeware. Feedback is welcome.

For those who don't know, STL files are 3D models made up of triangles.
