The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) will be next Saturday, Mar. 20, at 9:00 AM PST, at the IBM offices located in Plaza Tower, 600 Anton Blvd., Costa Mesa, on the 2nd floor.

Elections Mix with WiseManager

First, get ready to vote by reading the candidate's statements (located at http://www.scoug.com/os24u/1999/scoug903.2.elections.html) and listening to their speeches. That's right, along with a presentation we'll hear from each of the candidates for SCOUG's Board of Directors. And, of course, we'll elect our favorites.

Along with the elections, Kim Cheung of Serenity Systems (http://www.serenity-systems.com) will astound you with his presentation of WiseManager, a must-see application that blows away all preconceptions about network installation and management. WiseManager is a utility package for managing diskless PC's. All the PC's boot from the server and operate under Warp 4 - using the same applications as they do in regular OS/2. Most OS/2, Windows 3.1, DOS, and Java applications can run without any modifications to the base package. You can find out more about it by reading Kim's article about WiseManager on the VOICE web site:

http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0299H/vnewsf4.htm

Then it's on to Q&A, when you'll have an opportunity to get those pesky computer problems resolved. The raffle will follow, and, last but not least, come the Saturday SIG meetings:

General Interest Group - may look at the new Netscape release.

Programming SIG - will begin its' look at REXX as a tool with OS/2 applications. They'll start by using REXX to "glue" two applications together. Then in a subsequent meeting, they'll look at what is involved in adding REXX support to your own application.

Afterwards: Continue talking about the wonders of OS/2 over lunch.

Monday, Mar. 22, 7 PM PST meetings:

The Networking SIG and the OS/2 Help Desk will meet at Heritage Christian High School in Anaheim. This month the Network SIG will assist our new meeting location host update his classroom lab's OS/2 Warp Connect peer network to the current fixpak level. They'll also set-up and execute a remote attended update and discuss how to do a CID update. In another room, the OS/2 Help Desk will work with folks to solve hardware and software problems.

When, where, and how to get there:

SCOUG will be meeting on Saturday, March 20, at 9:00 AM (PST) at the IBM offices located in Plaza Tower, 600 Anton Bl., Costa Mesa, CA, on the 2nd floor. From I-405, exit onto Bristol northbound (one exit NW of the I-405/Hwy 55 interchange). Turn right on Anton Blvd (the first signal north of I-405). Go east 2 signals and turn right (you will see a TGI Fridays' on your right). Park in the open-air lot to your left. Plaza Tower is on a diagonal from the open-air parking lot.

For the Networking SIG & the OS/2 Help Desk on Mar. 22:

The Heritage Christian High School in Anaheim is at 2530 W. La Palma Ave. It is on the south side of La Palma Ave. (about 200 ft. E of Magnolia) on the property of Grace Baptist Church. There is a 2-story office building close to La Palma Ave. with the address of 2528 up near the roof. Turn in (south) there. Drive all the way to the back and park along the chain-link fence.

NOTE: There is a lot of freeway construction north of the school on I-5 and the 91 freeways; some on/off ramps may be closed and/or have detours. Check the SCOUG web site for updates, and leave yourself plenty of time to find our new SIG meeting location. Further information (including driving directions) can be found on the SCOUG web site at http://www.scoug.com. The driving directions also include maps for the general meeting that you can print off as needed. We hope to see you there!

           *** FEBRUARY FEATURE PRESENTATION ***
-- BASICS OF WEB SITE CREATION --

February's main presentation will focus on web site creation.
John Davey, Webmaster of the Philadelphia OS/2 SIG, will discuss
the basics of web authoring and will demonstrate the use of the
HomePage Publisher 2.1 for OS/2 to create and publish web sites.

HomePage Publisher is the premier WYSIWYG web editor for OS/2 and
is used by many of the major OS/2 sites on the web, including our
own Philadelphia OS/2 SIG website. John will highlight the new
features added to HPP since it was last demonstrated it two years
ago, such as the Smart Publishing feature which makes on the fly
changes to a site fast and easy.

John will also discuss the way to get a web site up and running
inexpensively, based on his recent "Frugal Webmaster" series of
articles in the PACS DataBus newsletter.

If you ever wondered how a web site gets started and developed,
be sure to join us on February 24.

Other agenda items include SIG business matters, OS/2 news and new
product announcements, a brief "How-To" or "Neat Feature" member
presentation, Q&A session, software raffle, etc. An OS/2 system
will be on hand for demos of OS/2, Java, Internet, etc., as time
may permit. Free light refreshments will also be available.

Mark the date and time: Wednesday, February 24, at 7:00pm. If you
want to hear about all the new and exciting developments, or have
questions about OS/2 Warp and Java, this is the place to see OS/2
in action and get all the answers to your questions. OS/2 SIG
meetings are open & free for all OS/2 users and guests, and all
others interested in learning about OS/2.
