SW: The Future of Mozilla 1.8 Suit

12 Mar 2005 19:24:31

From: "Sander Nyman"

The Mozilla Foundation announced some time ago, that the Mozilla Suite
would transition to the Firefox browser, and Thunderbird. For those that
preferred the Suite (myself included), there was reason to hope, as work
continued past version 1.7x, to version 1.8x, and indeed, the Mozilla
Suite remained on the roadmap.

Here is an official announcement (line up tequila shooters, and brace
yourself) on the future of the Mozilla Suite:

Mozilla Application Suite - Transition Plan

March 10, 2005

In 2003 we announced our intention to shift development focus from the
integrated Mozilla Application Suite (commonly referred to as "Seamonkey")
to a new generation of applications -- the Mozilla Firefox browser and the
Mozilla Thunderbird mail and news client. That shift in focus occurred
almost immediately, as the Mozilla Foundation was formed and we hired the
lead developers for Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird. At that time
we also stated our intention to maintain a long-lived, stable 1.7.x
version of Seamonkey. We noted that a number of commercial distributors
ship Seamonkey and will need the means to maintain it for their customers.
There is also a user and developer base that is fond of Seamonkey and
would like to maintain it. We have continued with this maintenance plan as
well, with a 1.7.6 release scheduled for the next few weeks.

In the last few months we have also been releasing a series of 1.8 alpha
and beta releases. The goal of these releases has been to test the changes
to the back-end aspects of our codebase. Most users are familiar only with
the "front-end" of our code -- the actual end user applications that
provide browsing and mail functionality. But underneath this layer of code
is a deep, complex layer of infrastructure that makes things work behind
the scenes. There's no reason for end users to be aware of this
foundation, just as most of us aren't aware of the details of the
foundation of the skyscrapers we visit. But it is critical, and continued
development and testing of this layer is vital to keeping our applications
healthy.

The ongoing alpha and beta releases of Seamonkey 1.8 have suggested that
the Mozilla Foundation itself will be creating a 1.8 final release. This
is not our plan. The 1.8 releases have been for testing our backend. We
intend that the 1.7.x line of releases will be the last long-lived,
maintained versions released by the Mozilla Foundation. There is no doubt
that the series of 1.8 alpha and beta releases have caused some confusion
about whether there would be a 1.8 product released by the Mozilla
Foundation. In addition, a set of people have done a non-trivial amount of
work on 1.8 features, thinking this would be part of an official Mozilla
Foundation release. This has been a major error on our part. These
contributors have reason to be unhappy with us. We can only apologize, at
the same time recognizing that apologies only go so far and can't fix the
error.

Our plan for the Seamonkey suite is as follows:

1. The 1.7.x line will be the last set of Seamonkey products released and
maintained by the Mozilla Foundation. The Mozilla Foundation will provide
infrastructure for those interested in working on the 1.7.x releases,
which we expect will include a number of vendors who provide these
products to their customers. We've committed to support the 1.7 branch
some time ago. If we ship 1.8 we'll need to support that as well, and we
just can't manage supporting that many versions as well as Firefox and
Thunderbird releases.

2. The Mozilla Foundation will provide infrastructure support (CVS access,
bugzilla, development tools, etc) for community members who wish to
continue to develop Seamonkey. This community group may wish to do formal
releases of Seamonkey, much as the Sunbird and Minimo developers do. We
support this. We probably won't use the same naming conventions, as we
need to be clear that this is not a Mozilla Foundation product release.

3. Boris Zbarsky has posted an open letter to the Mozilla Foundation
signed by a set of interested parties, laying out a community transition
plan. We support this plan and will work with interested parties to figure
out strategy. There will undoubtedly be some implementation details to be
worked out (e.g., can we actually use Seamonkey as a formal trademark, how
do we work the tinderbox machines, etc.).

The dedication to the product, the initiative of the developers and the
proposal of the transition plan as a solution are all hallmarks of the
Mozilla community. We support this effort completely.

SW: RexxMail build 20050308.113052 released.

08 Mar 2005 08:46:00

From: "Marcus de Geus"

A new build of RexxMail is available from my web site:

<http://www.degeus.com/rexxmail/>

RexxMail is an object-oriented WPS e-mail client, written in REXX, which
uses the standard WPS user interface. It features an extensive range of
functions and options with full command-line access.

Yes folks, the tradition continues as each new day in the week following a
major update of RexxMail sees a new release that fixes yet another buglet.

Seriously though, some of you reported problems with the creation of the
default RexxMail toolbar during installation. I can now confirm that this
is caused by installing the user mail folders in a subdirectory of the
RexxMail program directory, something which the installation program
should have prevented, but failed to do. The new build solves this
problem. If your installation was successful, you can skip this one.

Best regards,

Marcus de Geus

SW: DFSee 7.xx CDROM availability

07 Mar 2005 12:13:38

From: "Jan van Wijk"

In case anyone missed it, DFSee version 7 is available
as a CDROM offering as well, with a nice updated label.

Just as a reminder, anyone who bought a full version 6 or 7
or an upgrade to version 6 or 7 in 2005, is considered a
regular DFSee 7.xx user (you have the registration :-)

So you also have the right to buy the:

'CD-ROM only for registered 7.xx users'

Which is just 13 Euros plus shipping, available
(and in stock) from the Mensys webshop at:

http://shop.mensys.nl/dfsee

Again, this applies to version 6 ONLY when bought in 2005!

Of course, if you have the right hard and software,
you can also burn your own CDROM, and add your 7.xx
key to that using the tool provided with the ISO:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfsee7xx_iso.zip

And to make it a good-looking one, also get the labels
and print one directly on the CDROM (or CD sticker):

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/cdlabels.zip

These are the updated version-7 CD labels ...

SW: Mr. Message (AIM client) 3/6/2005 update

07 Mar 2005 09:50:15

Forwarded message from Marty on Mon, 7 Mar 2005
10:07:29 UTC Posted on: comp.os.os2.apps

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR
protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and
a variety of other clients).

It has been updated with the following changes:

* Added REXX plugin interface for each Mr. Message event.
Can control Mr. Message through "ADDRESS MrMessage" in a REXX script.
See ReadMe.REXX for more information on this interface.
* Added support for message acknowledgements.
* Fixed the typing notification icon changes, so that the notification
is reset to "nothing typed" immediately after an IM is sent. * Fixed to
stop sending a "nothing typed" notification after sending an
IM, since it is assumed on the receiving side.
* Fixed the IM popup window so that the "Send" button is disabled when
there is no text immediately after sending an IM.
* Fixed printing the garbage to the debug log if the name of a sound had
changed while the sound was playing.

To download, please visit the new official Mr. Message web page:
http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage

If anyone has any new suggestions for the new REXX interface or has
written some REXX scripts that they think can be generally useful, I'd

love to hear about them.

I will continue to post updates to USENET as well as updating the web
page.

SW: RexxMail build 20050307.090252 released.

07 Mar 2005 06:57:25

From: "Marcus de Geus"

A new build of RexxMail is available from my web site:

<http://www.degeus.com/rexxmail/>

True to the tradition established with previous major releases of
RexxMail, the build I posted yesterday contained a glitch in the
installation program that rendered it inoperative. I thought of blaming
one of the cats (useful creatures at times like this), but it looks like
it must have been me resting my elbow on the Enter key for a moment while
taking a phone call or something, which is not the smartest thing to do if
you're running a last-minute code check prior to release. My apologies to
those of you who took the trouble to download yesterday's release.

SW: RexxMail build 20050306.113510 released.

06 Mar 2005 10:18:01

From: "Marcus de Geus"

A new build of RexxMail is available from my web site:

<http://www.degeus.com/rexxmail/>

RexxMail is an object-oriented WPS e-mail client, written in REXX, and
based on the standard OS/2 (eCS) WPS user interface. It features an
extensive range of functions and options with full command-line access.

It's been quite a while since the last public release of RexxMail (well
over a year, in fact). The reason for the long delay is that I have been
recoding and reshaping the program, as well as adding lots of new
functionality. The message redirection functions have undergone a major
overhaul and now permit filtering on any combination of header and body
content, and can call any external program as well as move messages to any
location. In addition, the documentation (Reference Guide and Tutorial)
has been expanded considerably.

The list of changes and additions is too long to reproduce here, but be
aware that this is a major rebuild, so if you are using a previous release
of RexxMail, please take the time to read the documentation, and the
update instructions in particular, very carefully.

If you are not a RexxMail user, and if you are looking for software that
will let you create and send personalized messages, with different file
attachments, from a script or command line, you have just found it. If you
want a program to collect mail for different users, and depending on the
contents of the incoming messages, automatically run different programs
and drop messages or attachments in different folders anywhere on your
system, look no further. RexxMail will even set the icons of different
types of mail messages to your specification so you can see at a glance
whether anything requires your immediate attention. In addition, it lets
you keep track of the program's actions through a full set of error,
action, and mail logging functions, each of which can be independently
controlled (from the command line if you like). Oh, and if you just want
to send and read mail, RexxMail lets you do that too.

Best regards,

Marcus de Geus
