The Philadelphia OS/2 User Group invites all interested computer users to attend
the June monthly meeting:
. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27, 2001 7:00 - 10:00 PM
. The Episcopal Academy, 376 N. Latches Lane, Merion, PA
*** JUNE 27th FEATURE PRESENTATION ***
-- ATM Networking for OS/2 - Part 2 --
-- LVM/JFS Demonstration --
Last month, OS/2 member Vadim Kavalerov presented a Part 1 review of ATM networking,
and how TCP/IP can be implemented over ATM on OS/2, including the use of optical
fiber. This month, in Part 2, Vadim will take a look at ATM service classes and
QoS (quality of service). ATM traffic multiplexing and traffic contracts will be
explained, and he will also discuss the reasons why these features present advantages
of ATM cell multiplexing over packet-switching networking technologies such as Ethernet
or IP over SONET. Native ATM application development paths will also be outlined.
As a special added feature, Vadim will do a live demonstration of installation
of IBM's Logical Volume Manager (LVM) and Journaling File System (JFS) features,
which are still rather mysterious unknowns to most of our members.
LVM and JFS are major new features introduced with IBM Warp Server for e-Business
(WSeB) in 1999, and are also now included with IBM's MCP and ACP, as well as Serenity's
eComStation (eCS). Thus these components of high performance OS/2 storage systems
are now available to all OS/2 users at reasonably low cost.
In Barry Mann's REXX Section tutorial this month, everything comes together when
we cover the REXXUTIL functions. These are REXX functions specific to the OS/2 platform.
We will cover file system commands (ADD, DELETE, Directory Search, etc.), Workplace
Shell object manipulation and Extended Attributes. With these tools on your belt,
you'll be able to write an endless stream of useful utilities to install, uninstall,
backup, search, replace, and on and on.
Other agenda items include U/G business matters, OS/2 news, Q&A session,
new releases ~raffles. Free light refreshments.
Philadelphia OS/2 meetings are open and free for OS/2 users, their guests and
others interested in learning about OS/2 and associated technologies.

SCOUG Meeting June 16: DFSee direct from the Netherlands
The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) will be this
Saturday, June 16, 2001 at 9:00 AM PDT, at Regal Lanes in Orange, 1485 N. Tustin
Ave.
DFSee: Direct from the Netherlands!
Display File Systems (DFSee) is a generic partition and file system browser/analyzer.
Jan van Wijk, the program's author, will be here from the Netherlands to show it
to us.
DFSee supports partition tables (FDISK, LVM) (V)FAT, FAT32, HPFS structures,
some NTFS stuff, and it might support different file systems like JFS and EXT2 in
the future. For most purposes, DFSee is a complete FDISK replacement, and at the
moment, is a partial replacement for the LVM utility. DFSee also includes several
"fix" commands solving common problems and a simple sector-editing function
to make other kinds of manual changes. For HPFS and NTFS, it also includes UNDELETE
functionality for files. DFSee is shareware, and you'll find it on Hobbes (currently
it is known as DFSEE339.ZIP).
We'll also have Q&A, a raffle, and then the Saturday SIG meetings:
Sundial SIG: Work continues on their project to keep track of one's liquid assets
using Mesa 2. The target is to make it easy to use with lots of charts and consolidated
information.
Internet SIG or General Interest Group: one or the other will have an illuminating
topic. Check the SCOUG website (http://www.scoug.com/meetings.html)
for the latest information.
The Programming SIG will resume in July (July 21).
Help Desk chats now happen on Wednesday evenings at 7 PM PDT. If you've got a
problem with hardware or software, join the chat and ask for help. For further info,
go to http://www.scoug.com/chat/index.html.
(NOTE: there will NOT be a chat on Wednesday, July 4).
Sunday, July 1, 2:30 PM PDT meetings at Chapman University, Orange:
OS/2 Help Desk: Got problems with your system? Volunteers at the OS/2 Help Desk
will help you solve them. Bring your system and all related components along with
a detailed explanation of your problem.
Networking SIG: Will be providing help to members with various networking issues.
How to get to Regal Lanes:
From the 55 freeway, exit Katella Ave. heading west. Turn right (north) at the

There's lots of parking on the south side of the building. Enter from the east
entrance of the building (farthest from Tustin Ave.), not the main (front) entrance
to the facility. Take the stairs to the 2nd floor; meeting rooms (and restrooms)
will be on your left.
Handicapped access is via an elevator by the front door.
OR: Go to http://www.scoug.com/directions.html;
there is a map to Regal Lanes, plus a more detailed map ~driving directions from
Yahoo!
How to get to Chapman University:

2) Go to http://www.mapquest.com/ and enter
the address 400 N. Center Street, Orange, CA.
