Hardware: Update: Network scanner for OS/2-eCS

17 Jun 2005 19:42:58

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Ed Durrant

For those interested, there is currently a thread running on the
ecs-technical yahoogroups list related to MFC in cluding the Brother (in
our case MFC620CN however the network side is the same across the models
apparently). (Subject is "3in1 Printers and eCS?")

Also of note are these devices ability to (without computer connection) to
scan and e-mail a graphic direct from the machine in either PDF or JPG
format.

More discussions on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ecs-technical/

Cheers/2

Ed.

The Brother range of Network enabled Multi Function devices allow
documents to be scanned to a storage card (eg Compact Flash), which can
then be read via FTP.

The unit has a network interface (CAT5/RJ45) and can be assigned an IP
address manually or via DHCP. The printer is then available as a network
printer (Warp Server is mentioned in the manual as being compatible), and
a compact storage card (CF, Somy Memory stick, Sd but not MicroDrive) is
inserted, it becomes available via FTP on the same IP address.

When the card is plugged in, any digital photos can be printed directly,
and the entire card is available to be read over the network. Selecting
"Scan" offers the choice of storing on the card, and a PDF file is
generated which can then be read via the usual readers (Adobe Reader 3,
the Innotek versions or GhostView). Manipulation then happens as with any
other PDF file.

An MFC-3820CN has been tested and found very very useful for scanning.
The Network printing, or whether the Fax facility can be utilised over a
network from OS/2 has not been tested yet.

SW: unpaper (1.0.1) now on HOBBES

14 Jun 2005 10:23:05

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: "Franz Bakan"

Hi,

from readme.txt:

Overview
--------
unpaper is a post-processing tool for scanned sheets of paper, especially
for book pages that have been scanned from previously created photocopies.
The main purpose is to make scanned book pages better readable on screen
after conversion to PDF. Additionally, unpaper might be useful to enhance
the quality of scanned pages before performing optical character
recognition (OCR).
....

Written by Jens Gulden. Project homepage: http://unpaper.berlios.de/

I've compiled it for OS/2. It's now available on HOBBES/incoming

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-browse?dir=/pub/incoming

and will later be moved to

ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/graphics/scan/unpaper101.zip

Enjoy

Event: OS/2 and eComStation Developers Workshop - Update 3

14 Jun 2005 08:30:39

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: DevelopersWorkshopDESPAM@DESPAMnetlabs.org

It is now June and there is roughly one month left before OS/2 and
eComStation developers get together in Dresden. Just as a reminder, the
Developers Workshop 2005 will be held on July 9th and 10th in Dresden,
Germany.

New sessions:
We have added two new sessions to the workshop schedule. Adrian Gschwend
will talk about recent developments at netlabs.org. Following his
presentation, there will be a discussion about what can be done to improve
software development on the OS/2 platform. And there is one new session
that is centered around FORTRAN and GUI development, it is called:
FORTRAN/TK: Easy GUI development for OS/2 and Windows. We are currently
working to organize one more session. As soon as this is arranged, you
will see it on the Workshop Homepage. Looking at the session schedule for
the Developers Workshop, we do hope that there are enough exciting
presentation to justify your trip to Dresden!

Schedule:
To give you a first idea how the presentations are scheduled on the two
Workshop days, we have put a first session schedule online. The current
schedule can be found on the Workshop Homepage.

Presentation descriptions:
We have begun to add descriptions to the presentations. As soon as the
remaining speakers provide us with a description to their presentation we
will put it online. For your convenience, here is the list of
presentations:
- OS/2 USB Stack Development Guidelines
- Supporting USB WebCams in OS/2
- netlabs.org - What's up?
- Discussion about netlabs.org and OS/2 Software Development
- Developing cross-platform text-based applications in C using the
OpenWatcom compiler on OS/2
- FORTRAN/TK: Easy GUI development for OS/2 and Windows
- Porting X Applications to PM with Everblue
- Development roadmap for eComStation
- Translating eComStation
- Creating an OS/2 IEEE 1394 - Firewire driver
- Mozilla Compilation and Development Procedures

Information on the Workshop location:
If you are attending the Developers Workshop, you need to know a bit more
about the Workshop location. We have put a couple of images online as well
as a description about how to reach the Workshop Location. We have also
put the complete address of the building online, so you can use it
together with your favorite route planing software.

Last chance to buy Workshop tickets:
Just as a reminder, the Workshop team would appreciate it if you would
register for the Workshop as early as possible. You can purchase your
tickets at the Mensys online shop. We will stop selling tickets through
the online shop on July 4th. This means that after that date, you will
only be able to register for the event at the check-in desk!

Net: OS2 World: Is it time to install wireless network?

13 Jun 2005 08:05:00

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: kimhDESPAM@DESPAMos2world.com

Is it time to install wireless network? Or have you used it already for a
long time or plan to set up in the near future? Well, this is the current
poll we are running to figure out how many that actually runs wireless at
work or at home. The question is not really if you managed to set up your
OS/2 system or not within a local wireless lan; it more of getting an
opinion of how many that actually uses it and by this hopefully also give
some indication to thoose developing tools and drivers for wireless to be
used under OS2.

The current poll can be found here:
http://scripts.os2world.com/stuffed/

old polls can be found here:
http://scripts.os2world.com/stuffed/index.cgi?pkg=poll&action=archived_polls

and if you would like to suggest a poll:
