SW: Iconomize v0.50

27 Aug 2004 21:07:02

Forwarded message from "Rich Walsh" on Fri, 27 Aug 2004 19:40:15 UTC
POSTED ON: comp.os.os2.apps

I'm pleased to announce the release of Iconomize v0.50.

Iconomize is a unique ini-maintenance tool that lets you eliminate the
single largest source of bloat in os2.ini: duplicate icon data. Running
Iconomize just once can reduce the size of your os2.ini anywhere from 10%
to 25%.

You can download Iconomize from:
http://e-vertise.com/rws/iconomize050.zip

Currently, it is also available from hobbes in the /pub/incoming
directory. Once archived, it will be in /pub/os2/util/wps
Search: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=iconomize
Incoming: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/iconomize050.zip

Iconomize was created to demonstrate the features of Remote Workplace
Server ("RWS"). RWS enables stand-alone programs to interact with the WPS
as though they were part of it. They can query an object's title, paths,
icon, etc.; popup its menu; and more. RWS is an open-source project
licensed under the Mozilla Public License. For more info on RWS, please
download rws050.zip from the sites mentioned above.

SW: Remote Workplace Server v0.50

27 Aug 2004 16:40:02

Forwarded message from "Rich Walsh" on Fri, 27 Aug 2004 06:37:45 UTC
Posted on comp.os.os2.programmer.misc

I'm pleased to announce the release of Remote Workplace Server.

RWS enables a program to invoke any class or object method or any SOM
function in the WPS process without the use of SOM or DSOM. All types of
arguments and return values are supported. Data that is accessible or
meaningful only in the WPS process (e.g. a buffer or object pointer) can
be copied or converted to make it available to the calling process.

On input, objects can be referenced by name, handle, container record, or
hwnd. On output, object pointers can be converted to any of these, or to
a title, path, icon, and more. RWS's object conversion features can be
invoked independently of any method call using RwsConvert. Multiple
objects can be converted from one type of external reference to another in
a single call (e.g. from object handle to title, or from object ID to
icon).

RWS is an open-source project licensed under the generous terms of the
Mozilla Public License. The developer's package, rws050.zip, contains
ready-to-use server & client dlls, complete source code, extensive
documentation, and two demo programs. One of these, "Iconomize" is a
unique ini-maintenance tool that can reduce the size of your os2.ini by
10-25%. You can obtain the package from:

http://e-vertise.com/rws/rws050.zip

Currently, it is also available from hobbes in the /pub/incoming
directory. Once archived, it will be in /pub/os2/dev/wps

RWS is still in its initial stages of development. Suggestions for its
improvement & contributions of code to that end will be greatly
appreciated. In particular, I need assistance to develop a Classic REXX
interface for some of RWS's higher-level features.

Event: Misunderstanding About Hotel Upgrades for Warpstock 2004

27 Aug 2004 16:08:58

From: "Writer Guy"

Warpstock 2004 organzers have just recently learned that there was a
misunderstanding about the price for upgrading to a room on the 9th or
10th floors at the Sheraton Denver Tech Center Hotel. We have been
advertising the upgrade as $15 per night, when in fact it is $30. An
atrium room on the top floor is an additional $10. We apologize for
distributing information with the wrong prices.

Now, the good news. The hotel has offered five upgrades to Warpstock 2004
attendees at the $15/$10 price on a first come, first served basis. To get
that price you need to contact Joshua Garcia at the hotel either by email
(joshua.garciaDESPAM@starwoodhotels.com) or phone (303)874-6140.

What does a $30 upgrade get you? Upgraded rooms have goose down
comforters, robes and a copy/fax/printer. You'll also be able to graze a
hot breakfast (eggs, bacon, sausages, potatoes, fruit, bagels/toast and
cereal/juice) in the 9th floor lounge, and snacks and cocktails from 5:30
to 7:30 in the evening.

If You're Coming to Warpstock, Register Soon!

In the course of sorting out the upgrade information, we also heard that
the hotel will be full during the four days that Warpstock takes place.
This means that when the special Warpstock group rate ends on September
30th, you may pay the hotel's regular room rate, which is $179 a night.
So, if you're planning on coming to Warpstock 2004, make your hotel
reservations now, and make sure you tell them you're attending Warpstock.

Net: Dvorak at it again....

26 Aug 2004 15:50:48

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1636333,00.asp

In a recent column, John D. makes a list of the 10 Worst Software
Disasters. OS/2 is right between Framework's total screwup with the
update to dBase-II, and VisiOn a total vaporware product that he says
forced the preannouncement of Windows.

Worse, there's nothing from anyone in the replies (since I read them a day
or so ago) saying that the OS is not dead.

Warpstock will send him a press pass.....

Mark - filename should of course be jfs20040825.zip since Scott hasn't
yet invented time travel :P

[Moderator note: Someone must have renamed the file since the announcement
as I downloaded it with the incorrect name and didn't notice the time
machine factor. The correct URL is
ftp://testcase.boulder.ibm.com/ps/fromibm/os2/jfs20040825.zip Which I
just checked and the file is there. As to time travel, give Scott enough
time and he will work it out. :-) ]

Net: 4th RFD: comp.os.os2.ecomstation

24 Aug 2004 08:27:13

Forwarded message from on Tue, 24
Aug 2004 02:33:57 UTC Posted on: news.announce.newgroups

REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group comp.os.os2.ecomstation

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a
world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup comp.os.os2.ecomstation. This is
not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time. Procedural
details are below.

Newsgroup line:
comp.os.os2.ecomstation Serenity Systems operating system eComStation.

CHANGES from previous RFD:

Topic guidelines moved from Rationale to Charter.

RATIONALE: comp.os.os2.ecomstation

The newsgroup 'comp.os.os2.ecomstation' would be a forum for
discussing issues related to the use of the eComStation operating system,
a licensed version of IBM's OS/2 from Serenity Systems Intl.

Currently, the comp.os.os2.* newsgroups are used as a resource for asking
and answering questions regarding all OS/2 versions, including
eComStation. OS/2 is the major operating system upon which eComStation is
based, however eComStation has gained sufficient interest to support its
own newsgroup.

In addition, the general audience for questions regarding eComStation and
Serenity Systems differ from the audience interested in general IBM OS/2
questions. Therefore, it seems appropriate for eComStation to gain its
own newsgroup for eComStation-specific questions.

While several unmoderated online fora dedicated to eComStation do exist
and have a large amount of traffic, experience shows that the lack of a
unified forum hampers the development of a decent discussion.

The only other unmoderated newsgroups that offers some room for such
discussions today are in comp.os.os2.*. However, eComStation differs
significantly enough from the base OS/2 that discussions regarding it may
not be relevant at all to the general OS/2 user. Discussions involving
eComStation have comprised a significant portion of the traffic in the
comp.os.os2 hierarchy to the point where it may be distracting for the
eComStation user and general OS/2 user alike.

The separation of eComStation issues from general comp.os.os2.* topics
will hence avoid user confusion and avoid disagreement on the general
relevance of eComStation in relation to OS/2 which was felt to be
unsatisfactory by all parties.

CHARTER: comp.os.os2.ecomstation

comp.os.os2.ecomstation is an unmoderated newsgroup for discussion of the
eComStation operating system and related technologies.

Appropriate discussion in the group will involve eComStation and other
eComStation-related products (including Serenity Virtual Station.) Some
examples of topics that should be posted to
comp.os.os2.ecomstation:

- General questions regarding the installation and operation of
eComStation
- Questions regarding eComStation specific programming
- Discussion of eComStation related technologies
- Questions regarding application software and hardware support -
eComStation user advocacy and debate

Posting guidelines:

1) Posts must be related to the discussion of eComStation, which includes
all the modern aspects of operating eComStation as well as related topics,
but excludes general OS/2 topics, unless a direct relevance to eComStation
can be made explicit. Topics which are relevant to
the broader audience of OS/2 users may be better received in the
appropriate
general category OS/2 group. Original and interesting criticism of
eComStation is welcome.

2) Posts should not be made if they contain personal attacks, incitement
to retribution (i.e. flames and obvious trolling), or general hostility.

Clearly inappropriate postings include:
(1) Personal attacks;
(2) Discussion that isn't about or related to eComStation
(3) Multiple messages that all say the same or very similar things;
and
(4) Overly speculative postings and postings that are "not even
wrong."

3) Posts may include links to websites or personal pages that contain
relevant and on-topic information about eComStation.

4) Posting of binary files is prohibited. Short segments of source code or
quotes from papers may be posted; however, large projects and complete
papers should be archived elsewhere, and a link to the download site
included in the post.

END CHARTER.

PROCEDURE:

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase of
the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroups should be
raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue for a minimum of
21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this proposal is posted to
news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For Votes (CFV) may be posted
by a neutral vote taker if the discussion warrants it. Please do not
attempt to vote until this happens.

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.

This RFD attempts to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation
guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "How to
Format and Submit a New Group Proposal". Please refer to these documents
(available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have any questions about the
process.
