I'm very pleased to announce that MKS has accepted an invitation to conduct a presentation at our February 27th meeting: "Software Development Trends in Reducing Risk." This promises to be a most interesting presentation of very latest cutting-edge technology. Please plan to attend the February 27th meeting. Don't miss it!

MKS is a recognized leader in this field. Since 1984, MKS software solutions have been enabling development teams to analyze, build and deploy software systems quickly and reliably for many leading corporate clients throughout the world. Today, more than 10,000 companies world-wide use MKS's tools.

MKS representatives David McMullin (an Episcopal Academy alum) and Steve Knapp will highlight several case studies of pitfalls to be avoided in management of software development projects. It will include an analysis of what went wrong and why, as well as the business impact, and will relate to development on all platforms including OS/2. The analysis will also discuss evolving trends in software development.

Lastly, examples will be presented of ways in which software development can be managed in the most effective and efficient manner, using current best practices in people, process and technology. These will reflect evolving industry best practices which may be applicable to all platforms, including OS/2.

SCOUG meeting Feb. 16: Guiffy

Contact: Tony Butka tony@scoug.com

The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) will be this Saturday, February 16, 2002 at 9:15 AM PST, at Regal Lanes in Orange, 1485 N. Tustin Ave.

Guiffy

What's in a name (pronounced Goofy)? In this case, a lot! Guiffy stands for GUI diFF & suremerge 2-or-3-waY tool, and this month, the tool's author, Bill Ritcher, will be on hand to show us all that it can do. In simple terms, Guiffy is a compare and merge utility for source files, folders, and file trees. It's Java based, which handily makes it cross- platform. It's fast, too.

Not a programmer? Think you don't need it? Come take a look anyway. Ever wonder what you changed in CONFIG.SYS? Guiffy can find the differences and display them, even for those really long PATH/DPATH/ LIBPATH lines. Better yet, it can help you remove some of the differences while keeping the rest. To make this even better, Bill will be offering a club discount for copies purchased at the meeting. Still not sure? Well, members might even win a copy at the award- winning SCOUG raffle.

We begin at 9:15 AM after some socializing with announcements, the presentation, and then a break for more socializing. Follow that with a SIG presentation or two and we're done around 12:30 PM. Don't forget that we'll also have Q&A when folks share their tribulations and solutions, and the aforementioned raffle. The donuts and coffee are free.

OS/2 Help Desk and Networking SIG, March 3rd, 2002, 2 PM PST, Chapman University in Orange:

Should you be in need of technical assistance, take your problem - and your system - to the in-person OS/2 Help Desk that's held once a month at Chapman University. SCOUG volunteers will help you work it all out.

While you're at the in-person Help Desk, find out what the Networking SIG is doing. If networking isn't part of your current strategy, it will be eventually. The SIG meets at the same time and place, and pursues issues related to network configurations and problem solutions.

How to get to Regal Lanes:

From the 55 freeway, exit Katella Ave. heading west. Turn right (north) at the first major intersection onto Tustin Ave. At the next signal you'll find Regal Lanes on your right. It's across from the Toyota of Orange dealership.

There's lots of parking on the south side of the building. Enter from the east entrance of the building (farthest from Tustin Ave.), not the main (front) entrance to the facility. Take the stairs to the 2nd floor; meeting rooms (and restrooms) will be on your left.

Handicapped access is via an elevator by the front door.

OR: Go to http://www.scoug.com/directions.html; there is a map to Regal Lanes, plus a more detailed map & driving directions from Yahoo!

How to get to Chapman University:

There are two ways to get directions:
1) Go to http://www.scoug.com/warpexpowest/sitemap.html
2) Go to http://www.mapquest.com/ and enter the address 400 N. Center Street, Orange, CA.

Come to Hashinger Hall Science Building, room 203. It's on the second floor and there's an elevator for you to bring up your equipment.

Come and join us!

POSSI Meeting Feb 12 !!!!

ANNOUNCEMENT: POSSI MEETING FEBRUARY 12.

At the February meeting of the Phoenix OS/2 Society, we'll celebrate OS/2 and demonstrate how the operating system is successfully running a small business. LUMATURE, in Scottsdale, will open its doors -- including the door to the computer room! See firsthand every aspect of this business runs on networked computers using OS/2.

Lumature, a lighting and furniture store, has been using OS/2 as its only operating system since 1994. Every business function is performed by OS/2 Warp 4 workstations on a network powered by WSeB servers.

When and where: The store is located at 15620 North Scottsdale Rd, north of Greenway, on the west side of the street. Although the LUMATURE showroom closes to the public at 6:00pm, the doors will be open to members of the user group (and operating-system curious visitors!); staff will demonstrate and answer questions.

Want more detail? Hardware and OS/2 software used by Lumature include:

* WISEMANAGER from Serenity Systems, used to remote boot the diskless IBM NetStations from a WSeB RIPL server.
* SMACK! is used to print custom showroom price tags and labels.
* CLEARLOOK word processing.
* PMFAX (network version) has been in daily use for many years.
* INJOY FIREWALL for Internet access.
* PMMAIL E-mail client.
* INETMAIL E-mail server.
* DOMINO GOwebSERVER run http://www.lumature.com/
* SMARTSUITE and STAROFFICE are used to open documents received in almost any format.
* Accounting software is 16-bit DOS, run in a VDM. * HOUSE/2 home automation software.

Experience how every light fixture, table lamp, and wall light in the showroom is controlled from 'virtual' switches created on showroom workstation screens. Using the HOUSE/2, every display fixture can be turned ON, OFF, or DIMMED from the showroom computers. Every light can be addressed individually or as a member of a group. Using an ELO-TOUCH touchscreen monitor in the showroom (with OS/2 drivers) it is very easy to control the hundreds of light fixtures in the store.
