SW: Weasel version 1.70 released

20 May 2004 22:33:31 -0500

From: "Peter Moylan"

The Weasel mail server has been upgraded to version 1.70. You can find it
at
http://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/os2/weasel.html
or
ftp://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/Weasel/weasel170.zip
or at Hobbes:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=weasel170

(Note: the Hobbes search doesn't seem to work for files that are still in
the "incoming" directory.)

There have been many changes since the version 1.68 release - see below -
so all Weasel users are encouraged to update their copies. If you haven't
tried Weasel before, now is a good time to try it out.

LIST OF CHANGES (since version 1.68)

Version 1.70 (21 May 2004)

Support for different languages in Setup. This version
is distributed with English, French, and Dutch
language files, but it is easy to add more.
Setup notebooks now remember fonts dropped on them.
Added new user options: inactive account, forward mail
with or without local copy.
Policy change: if a filter returns a "reject this mail"
decision, we send the reply to the client, and then
send a "421 closing connection" reply, and then we
forcibly cut off the client. This is to protect us
against the increasingly aggressive approach of
junk mail software.
Policy change: rDNS lookup on numeric IP addresses is not
done unless and until necessary.
Policy change: the loopback address [127.0.0.1] is now
automatically a "Trusted" address that is allowed to
send relay mail.
More flexible rules for the syntax of an IP address range.
Added some delays to discourage dictionary searches:
- 2 seconds after POP password error (note that there
is already a limit of 3 attempts to log in)
- 10 seconds before SMTP "unknown user" reply
- 10 seconds after an SMTP RSET command
Indented continuation lines in screen log.
Added initial server response to log.
Extra "End of session" log message to make log analysis
easier.
Added "pipe" to transaction logging options.
"Override filter" option now works even when there are
multiple recipients, possibly with different filters
for each recipient.
Fixed: adjust Return-Path header after calling a filter.
Fixed Setup bug: option to log SMTP users was not
being remembered.
Permit a delivery attempt via backup server if original
server gives 550 or 553 response to RCPT command.
Fixed: failure to try backup relay if the initial attempt
failed on the MAIL FROM command.
Added an option to relay everything, for the case where this
server has no local users and is simply acting as a
front end for another mail server.
Now can change all logging options without restarting Weasel.
Made the log file names configurable.
Added a new reply code 16 for filters, meaning "accept this
message and skip future filtering steps".
Setup changed to fix a "lost users" bug that appeared when
remote setup was used in multidomain mode. Also minor
other changes to Setup.

Net: Dialog Enhancer web site to close

19 May 2004 22:48:07 -0500

From: "Mark Dodel"

http://www.dialogenhancer.com/

"13th May 2004

After a long period of thought and deliberation, I have made the decision
to close the web site down and halt all future development on the products
offered within. Dialog Enhancer has been a large part of my life for 6
years and I have devoted much of my time in pursuit of an enjoyable hobby.

Dialog Enhancer was started whilst I was at university and was born out of
my unhappiness with the way OS/2 Warp looked to the end user. The product
started off with a strong following, boosted by the bargain price point
and unique method of working; it was to top the BMT Micro sales charts on
several occasions. The sales justified the time spent redesigning the
dialogs and I spent many enjoyable nights crafting and getting feedback
from grateful users.

Time has moved on and I am now in full time employment. Much of the spare
time I enjoyed in university has now been swallowed up in other business
interests and I could no longer offer the service to users that they
deserved. It's been a great ride over the years, but now I need to get off
and pursue a new challenge.

After a successful hand-over of Dialog Enhancer improved resource files to
Serenity Systems for integration into eComStation several years ago, I
watching the future of OS/2 develop in a blossoming, strong product. I
have decided to pass over the remaining code for their use. Their
dedicated team of developers, a healthy mix of end users and industry
professionals, have done a stunning job with a product that shows how OS/2
will continue into the next decade. Guys, I salute you.

To all existing users of Dialog Enhancer, I would like to thank you for
your support and hope that you would pass on your encouragement and
comments to the new development team managing the software in the near
future.

Thank you,

Richard

Note, the site will close as of the 8th June 2004."

SW: eRedMan Version 0.9.beta.3

19 May 2004 08:20:40 -0500

From: Herwig Bauernfeind

This is the first public beta release of eRedMan, a pipe redirection
manager for eComStation and OS/2. It is a general pipe redirection utility
(like printmon.exe or print2ps.cmd that comes with ePDF). Its equivalent
in the Windows world is RedMon (although eRedMan is quite different!).

eRedMan is multithreaded and therefore is able to monitor multiple pipes
and associate one program to a particular pipe and execute it, whenever
data was written to the pipe.

It redirects the contents of pipes to a temporary file and calls the
associated program with defined parameters as soon as all the data has
been written to the pipe.

Usage examples:
- As a replacement for Printmon.EXE using older versions of ePDF.
- As a replacement for Print2PS.CMD using newer versions of ePDF.
- Use GhostScript as a printer driver in order to turn your inkjet
printer into a PostScript printer.
- Or more general: As eRedMan can install pipes as printer ports.
Print from any application and process the output using a different
program automatically with having to fiddle with long commandlines
everytime.
- You can do all the above at the same time this without having
to run multiple instances of PrintMon.EXE or Print2PS.CMD

In addition, you get a decent GUI for managing all this.

Known problems and limitations:

Temporary files are placed into the TEMP directory. eRedMan currently has
a very primitive cleanup mechanism for leftover files, so you will not be
able to run this beta for a very long time (weeks or months) without
restarting it once in a while.

Depending on the number of usages, who will have to restart eRedMan once
in a while. On a PC that is rebooted daily, this should not be an issue.

This will be addressed in the next release.

There is no help system implemented currently.

Feedback is appreciated. This is the first public beta, so this is neither
complete nor bugfree, although it works for me quite well.

Contact me by email in case of problems.

SW: Detect and repair Windows BOOT.INI problems using DFSee 6.06

18 May 2004 16:40:01 -0500

From: "Jan van Wijk"

One new feature was not really highlighted in the DFSee version 6.06
announcement that went out a few days ago:

FIX Windows BOOT.INI file on FAT/FAT32 or NTFS

This may fix many unable to boot problems with Windows, that sometimes
gets very confused when installing other operating systems alongside like
OS/2 with BM or Linux :-)

There is now a DFSee command (and menu-item) that will:

- Find the (first) BOOT.INI file in the selected partition
- Display the default boot-line with partition-index
- Display the CORRECT partition-index according to DFSee

and (optionally):

- UPDATE the BOOT.INI file in-place to use the calculated
partition-index
or any other value you think may fix the problem :-)

A typical run on an NTFS partition without update would look like:

++++++++++ DFSee BOOTINI output sample

Default boot entry line in boot.ini is:

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

The partition-number in the default line is : 2
The partition-number calculated by DFSee is : 2

++++++++++ So no problems here :-)

I think this is a very usefull feature, certainly on NTFS filesystems that
are hard to update once Windows does not boot anymore!

Regards, JvW

Mag: Articles wanted!

18 May 2004 16:04:52 -0500

From: "Christian Hennecke"

Currently, both the VOICE Newsletter and OS/2 eZine are suffering from
lack of submitted articles. OS/2 eZine even wasn't able to publish an
April issue because of this, the May issue is late, and many articles have
been written by the staff itself over the past months.

Please help to ensure that two sources of OS/2 and eComStation information
stay alive and consider submitting an article. It's not that hard as you
might think, and almost everybody has some area of special expertise, be
that programming or how to get certain tasks done in your word processor.
If you don't know what to write about or how to do an article, please
check the article ideas and guidelines of the Newsletter and OS/2 eZine:

Mag: VOICE Newsletter: tips editor wanted

18 May 2004 11:54:52 -0500

From: "Christian Hennecke"

The VOICE Newsletter has lost its tips editor on grounds of ill health.
The rest of the team is too busy to make up for this loss. As it stands
now, we are in dire need of a reliable replacement editor.

If you regularly browse OS/2 forums, mailing lists, and news groups, it
is not much additional work. You would have to gather information from
those resources that you find fit for the tips page, add tips which are
directly submitted to VOICE via e-mail, and compile it in HTML format. It
is really cut and paste for the most part, so please consider volunteering
for this position

SW: FotoGet/2 Version 1.0.3

18 May 2004 06:40:51 -0500

From: Herwig Bauernfeind

This is the general availability release of FotoGet/2 Version 1.0.3, a
freeware utility to ease the transfer of your pictures from your digital
camera to your OS/2 (eComStation) PC. The camera must be accessible from
OS/2 by a driveletter. As you might know already, this is not a device
driver.

Some of the features of the future version 1.1.0, that were easy to
implement, were also built into the 1.0.x line of code. (hopefully without
sacrificing stability and introducing new bugs).

What is new in this release?
+ Reintroduced EXIF rename feature to 1.0.x
+ More error checking when folder and/or subfolders are created
+ New commandline switch /EXIFRENAME:ON|OFF
+ New commandline switch /NLSFORCE:xx to use a specific language if the
LANG variable cannot/should not be used (for whatever reason)
+ Dutch language support (provided by Menno Tillema)
+ Warp4-Style folder icon package (provided by Klaus Staedtler)

What was fixed or changed in this release?
! Folder mini icons also show a camera
! White-on-Red warning text if camera is not found.
! German language file clarified and some more minor items.

Support is provided on YahooGroups.
Visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fotoget/ to check out!

SW: Driver for ENE Technologies Cardbus Adapters

16 May 2004 11:49:26 -0500

From: Paul Smedley

Modified version of the IBM Cardbus driver for Texas Instruments chipsets
to support the ENE Technologies range of Cardbus adapters.

Available from http://smedley.info/ibm2ss14-ene.zip

(Please do not upload to Hobbes or anywhere until I can confirm that it's
working OK)

The following ENE Technologies chipsets *should* be supported:

Chipset Vendor ID Device ID
ENE Technology CB-1211 0x1524 0x1211
ENE Technology CB-1225 0x1524 0x1225
ENE Technology CB-1410 0x1524 0x1410
ENE Technology CB-1420 0x1524 0x1420
ENE Technology CB-710 0x1524 0x1411 or 0x0710
ENE Technology CB-720 0x1524 0x1421 or 0x0720

Note that TI chipsets will not be detected.

Background: I'm about to buy a laptop that features the ENE Technologies
CB-1410 driver. The only OS/2 support for this chipset appears to be in
a commercial Socket Services package that costs 60 Euro. After
investigating Linux support - it appears that the ENE chips are register
compatible with the TI chips, so I found the source on the DDK site, and
made some changes to replace the TI Vendor/Device IDs with the ENE ones.

Note that I haven't been able to test this yet due to lack of hardware -
but interested in feedback to paul@smedley.info!

As usual - I'm not responsible for any damage resulting from trying this
driver - and it probably requires you to install the necessary support via
IBM's cardbus.exe available from SWC or the eCS website - then replace
the installed version of ibm2ss14.sys with the one from this package to
enable support for the ENE chipset!
