HW: Tim's Warped Bargains: HP Color LaserJet 2550L $299.98

07 May 2005 12:05:24

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Timothy Sipples

Dear Bargain Hunters,

The Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 2550L, a color laser printer, is about to go
on sale from May 15 through 21 at Staples (the U.S. office products store)
as part of their anniversary sale. The Staples stock number is 567293.
After an instant discount and "easy rebate," the final price will be
$299.98 plus tax.

Look for the Staples sales flyer, available at Staples.com, a couple days
before this sale. Be ready to jump on it -- stores may go out of stock
quickly.

This price is quite excellent for a color laser printer. This printer
features both PCL Level 6 and Postscript (for excellent support with
eComStation and OS/2 Warp), 64 MB of RAM (expandable), and both parallel
and USB ports. Always check the cost of consumables (toner, etc.) when
buying a printer to make sure it's reasonable for the type of printing you
do.

I have no affiliation with Staples or HP.

Net: Team Warped moves into 9th place.

06 May 2005 23:59:20

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Kevin McCoy

After a year or two as the 10th ranked team on Distributed.net's OGR
challenge, Team Warped has moved up a spot to number 9. We shot past "Ars
Technica Team Roast Beef", trouncing them with a key completion rate over
3 times greater than theirs. This is very significant, as they have 130
more members than we do, and who knows how many more computers working on
the challenge.

Many thanks to all the Team Warped members, especially the ones that
joined recently!

Visit our Team Warped web site and see how _you_ can help us move up even
higher in the rankings:

http://idk.serveftp.net:81/cowboy/participant.html

Click on the links under "Cowboy Information" for information about the
contest, how to join the team, and how to post your up-to-the-minute
statistics on the site. If you have a fast computer (or better yet, lots
of fast computers), show them off on the site. "Cow", by the way, refers
to Cluster Of Workstations - hence the site name and some really bad
puns. ;-)

This site is free, has no advertising and does not collect any personal
information. It is provided as a service to the OS/2 community by IDK,
Inc., the maker of KeyRing/2.

Contact cowboyadminDESPAM@DESPAMidk-inc.com for more details and help
getting set up.

Here is a short description of the contest that I posted a few weeks ago:

Did you know that some dedicated OS/2ers have been competing on your
behalf for over 7 years, using our computers to solve some very difficult
cryptographic and mathematic problems?

Did you know that Team Warped is in the TOP 10 teams in the world in one
of the contests! This is out of thousands of teams, so its quite an honor
to be this high in the rankings! By our high rankings, we show the power
of OS/2 to the world - even when we are vastly outnumbered by users of
other operating systems.

Team Warped (OS/2) is currently working on two distributed.net contests.
The first one, called RC5-72 is attempting to crack a commonly used
cryptographic algorithm. The second is a mathematic algorithm called
OGR-25.

By "cracking", I don't mean *anything illegal*. It is simply a test of
what kind of computing power and time is required to figure out the
"password" of a sentence encrypted using RC5 encryption. Everyone knows
the text of the sentence. The hard part is trying out every possible
password. There are more possible keys than stars in the sky, so it takes
a while :-)

It is the OGR-25 contest where we are in the top 10, so we would like to
concentrate on that one.

Team Warped members donate computer time using a simple utility that runs
in the background on your Warp, eCS, windoze or Linux box. The utility
periodically downloads new blocks of possible "passwords"(keys actually)
and tries to decrypt the encrypted sentence or work on another block of
mathematic problems. Since the utility only uses your CPU when it is not
being used for other tasks, you will likely not know it is running.

To stay in the top 10, we need your help!

You can help by downloading the appropriate "client" or utility from:

http://www.distributed.net/download/clients.php

There are different clients for OS/2 (one client works on all OS/2
flavors) and other operating systems. Make sure you download the correct
one. Team Warped can use your help *even if some of your machines use
other operating systems*, but we do prefer OS/2 and its variants :-)

Next, _join Team Warped_, so that we get credit for the work your
computer(s) do. If you don't join, you aren't helping us in the rankings!

Thanks for joining!

SW: Update Intel PRO/1000 Gigabit Ethernet

06 May 2005 22:57:56

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: madodelDESPAM@DESPAMptdprolog.net

I've been told (Thanks to Ed Durrant) that the IBM Device Driver site was
again incorrect in listing the IBM version of the Intel Pro/1000 Gigabit
driver as updated. It is again the same driver from last year.

However checking the Intel site, they have a different version (Intel
lists it as 10.0) of a driver (PRODOS.EXE) for the Intel Pro/1000 and
Pro/100 which shows as having been updated 05/02/2005. This doesn't
require any subscription to download, but it is in a stupid windoze
executable archive. You can unarchive it using Odin. This package
includes both DOS and OS/2 drivers. The included OS/2 drivers are:

e1000.os2 28,212 2/28/2005
e100b.os2 25,140 11/23/2004

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProductID=983&DwnldID=4239&strOSs=10&OSFullName=OS/2*〈=eng

The release notes are at
ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/4239/ENG/relnotes.rtf but it
doesn't really have anything useful that I could see. Note this is in RTF
format, which is readable using OpenOffice.org and probably Lotus WordPro,
but not by a web browser.

From: madodelDESPAM@DESPAMptdprolog.net

I'm almost afraid to send this out since I heard that the last update of
this driver was not really an update. I don't have access to an IBM
subscription, so I can't check this. Why IBM lists things as updated that
aren't I don't know, but it happens on occasion. So this may or may not
in fact be a new version. Anyway IBM's Device Driver site lists the Intel
PRO/1000 as updated as of 05/06/2005.

SW: Mr. Message (AIM client) 5/2/2005 update

03 May 2005 12:27:50

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

Forwarded message from Marty on Tue,
3 May 2005 07:11:52 UTCPosted on: comp.os.os2.apps

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR
protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and
a variety of other clients).

It has been updated with the following changes:

* Changed the way messages are sent so that they are wrapped in HTML.
This should fix messaging with some braindead clients that won't
display plain text.
* Added some fundamental building blocks of file transfer and group
chat support. Nothing functional yet, but it's a start.
* Added a command line option: "-showrawincoming". This will allow
me to see in the debug log file if a given received packet was
misinterpretted to cause a problem.
* Fixed the way certain user information packets are interpretted,
cleaning up the log and eliminating the slim possibility of a
crash.
* Fixed the migration process completely. Any server-initiated
disconnect should now be handled correctly.
* Fixed a few double and bad frees when a connection has been cut and
re-initiated automatically.
* Fixed a deadlock in the receiver thread causing Mr. Message to stop
responding to messages from the server on your first sent message.
This condition occurred only if you had told Mr. Message to add a
buddy to your local buddy list, and this same buddy had already
been added to your server-stored buddy list by another program. * Fixed
some settings being "forgotten" because of a change in
capitalization or spacing of your screen name (initiated by the
user or the server).
* Added a routine to patch the MrMessage.INI file to recover these
"forgotten" settings and remove garbage entries created by bugs
in previous releases.
* Fixed highlighting as "in use" the wrong entry when an entry is
automatically started but the Session Manager had a different item
cursored on startup.
* Fixed a crash when using the -nosound option and REXX script
events occur.
* Fixed a crash when receiving an empty instant message.
* Fixed a crash when receiving rendevous messages (file transfer,
group chat, advanced text messages, etc.)

To download, please visit the new official Mr. Message web page:
http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage

If anyone has any new suggestions for the REXX interface or has written
some REXX scripts that they think can be generally useful, I'd love to
hear about them.

I will continue to post updates to USENET as well as updating the web
page.

SW: Visual Paradigm for UML (VP-UML) 4.1 Build ? Released

03 May 2005 09:27:40

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: stellaDESPAM@DESPAMvisual-paradigm.com

Visual Paradigm is pleased to announce the release of Visual Paradigm for
UML (VP-UML) 4.1, a powerful yet the most easy-to-use UML modeling and
CASE Tool. The latest release of VP-UML features several new features and
enhancement over the previous version, such as Object Relational Mapping
(ORM) support, Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD), more extensive UML 2.0
coverage, enhanced Sequence Diagram and new freehand connector style
(curve).

VP-UML 4.1 provides extensive support for Object Relational Mapping (ORM)
and ER Diagram (ERD). The tool helps generating the persistent Java source
code you need to access database(s). It provides multiple database support
which allows you to access various database system (MYSQL, Oracle, HSQLDB,
MS SQL, Sybase ...) with the same set of persistent source code. Another
feature is the ability to generate database from Class Diagram or ERD. You
can design your application with Class Diagram and ERD within VP-UML, and
generate database table from the resulting diagrams. The tool also
facilitate in the reverse engineering of relational database(s). You can
reverse engineer legacy database system (MySQL, Oracle, DB2,
HypersonicSQL, Pointbase, MS SQL, jTDS, Sybase ...) to Class Diagram and
ERD.

In VP-UML 4.1, UML 2.0 support is enhanced to cover new UML model,
notation and diagrams more extensively, which includes Interaction
Overview Diagram, Timing Diagram, Composite Structure Diagram, Activity
Diagram, Sequence Diagram, ActivityPartition (Swimlane) ,Action, Exception
Handler, Timing Frame, Port and many more. For Sequence Diagram, it is not
only enhanced to support UML 2.0 notation, it is also improved in
diagramming features and usability so that it is easier to use and more
reliable than ever before.

Beside the rectilinear and oblique connector style, VP-UML 4.1 adds the
freehand connector style (curve) which makes it a lot easier to route
connectors in a complex diagram.

Core features of VP-UML 4.1
=======================
* Object Relational Mapping (ORM) support.
* ER Diagram (ERD) support
* Bi-directional code generation between UML models and EJBs.
* Ad-hoc documentation generation with content synchronization with
project
* MSVisio integration
* Support of Requirement Capturing (Use Case Modeling, CRC Card, Textual
Analysis)
* PDF report generation
* HTML report generation
* Teamwork Support
* Support of XMI import
* Support of Rose project import
* Sophisticated Diagram layout facility

The latest release of Visual Paradigm for UML is available and well-tested
in platforms such as Windows, Linux and Java Desktop. You can download it

SW: Updated Python Build 20050501

01 May 2005 10:22:11

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Paul Smedley

Hi All,
I've again updated the Python build - a new build can be found at
http://smedley.info/python241-os2-innotekgcc20050501.zip

The major change in this build is that I've made the necessary changes for
large file (ie >2gb) support.

There are now some known issues based on feedback from users:
1) Bittorrent v4.0 or higher is not working due to problems with ncurses
support.
2) Bittorrent v3.4.2 shows some error messages at startup (in common with
the EMX Python 2.4.1 build) however does download OK.

Again, as I have limited upstream, please only download this if you intend
testing. Once it is stabilised, I'll upload to Hobbes.

Cheers,

Paul.
