Net: netlabs.org: xTracker problems (hopefully) fixed

10 Jul 2004 10:34:58 -0500

From: Adrian Gschwend

Hi all,

As some of you noticed the xTracker database at netlabs.org was not
working correctly for some time. I noticed that some MySQL tables were
corrupt and fixed them, unfortunately this did not resolve all the
problems. Some bugs were simply lost and some fields had some *very*
strange values instead of real content.

So I had to restore the last working backup I found and this was the one
from 19. June 2004.

I saw that some people signed up after this date, unfortunately your
account will be lost now. Please join again and submit your bugs as well
once again.

Sorry for the troubles, I hope it's fixed now

controller driver and mass storage layer. The initial version of the
driver will support PCI attached Firewire controllers build around the
VIA Technologies Inc. VT6306 chipset. A hard drive connected via a
Firewire case will be supported by the sbp2 protocol.

OT: A Finger in the Eye of Microsoft

07 Jul 2004 15:43:06

From: The Appraising Microsoft mailing list
http://lists.essential.org/mailman/listinfo/am-info

[Moderator's note: This is not my idea, I'm just passing it on for anyone
that might find it interesting. Yes its off topic for this list and is so
noted in thesubject, so if it annoys you, just delete it, but you
shouldn't be reading it anyway. ;-) It is however a small way to stick
it to M$ in their latest scheme to assimilate and control yet another part
of the internet.]:

If you're a techie, like me, you've probably noticed that Microsoft has
been making a lot of noise about competing with Google these days. Yahoo,
too, has been active. In general, the search engine space is starting to
heat up again after several years of google-dominance. And if you're
running a website, for yourself or for someone else, you've probably seen
the Microsoft search bot in your server logs. At least, you have if you
pay attention to your server logs and Microsoft can find your site yet.

Now, don't get me wrong, competition is a good thing... but competition
from Microsoft is not. We all know that competition from Microsoft
involves things like "cutting off their air supply" and aggressively
wielding their desktop muscle and huge cash reserves to get a foothold in
the new market. Google's an established player, but it's facing a fair
amount of competition and the current IPO can perhaps be taken as a hint
that they are vulnerable -- that is, sufficiently in need of cash that it
might affect their ability to respond to new players.

So it looks like Microsoft is trying to extend its overbearing self into
the search engine space, and the target at the top of the list is Google.
Now, as a Linux user, I understand two things about this situation: first,
Microsoft is not my friend; and second, Google has been a very good
friend.

So here's what I have to say: from now on, the Microsoft search bot will
be specifically excluded from my web sites via the robots.txt file. The
following entry should accomplish this:

User-agent: msnbot/*
Disallow: /

What that means is that I won't allow Microsoft's search engine to index
my websites. Google can, yahoo can... but Microsoft can't. It's the
website owner's version of an invisible boycott. And if enough people do
it, the Microsoft search engine will find itself unable to search large
segments of the web. And that means that people who notice this won't want
to search using Microsoft's search engine.

HW: Tim's Warped Bargains: Dell P1500 Laser Printer

06 Jul 2004 19:01:25 -0500

From: Timothy Sipples

Dear Bargain Hunters,

If you're looking for a budget laser printer (single sided printing,
monochrome), there's a sale running through July 10, 2004, that might
interest you.

It's the Dell P1500 Laser Printer. According to reports this printer is a
Dell-branded Lexmark E321 laser printer. However, Lexmark made sure that
only Dell's toner cartridges would work, even though mechanically they are
the same as Lexmark's. Just be aware of that bit of "marketing
engineering" and make sure you understand the price and availability of
Dell toner cartridges and how that affects your printing costs. You can
find the printer's specifications here:

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/print_p1500?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh

Despite Dell's admonition, this printer understands standard Postscript
and PCL datastreams, so it has plenty of driver support for your favorite
operating system. (You can use the E322 or E310 profile in the standard
LaserJet driver. That should produce excellent results.) The printer has
both USB and parallel ports, and the engine is rated at a very speedy 19
pages per minute

Dell has factory refurbished P1500 printers available for $129 plus $14
shipping. But we can do better than that. Use coupon code WJFDF4C0HQTXSM
at checkout for $25 off. Also, if you surf through to Dell's web site
from http://www.fatcash.com you may also earn a 3% rebate on your
purchase. So your final price is $118 or possibly lower.

Check the Dell Outlet section of Dell's web site to locate this printer
(and specifically in the Dell Outlet Peripherals - Dell Printers section).
Or you can click on "View Inventory" from the above web link if you aren't
trying for the FatCash rebate.

I'm generally a fan of factory refurbished laser printers. I think they
(generally) represent a good value given that most of the "action" is
contained in the toner cartridge (and fuser if that's separate). These
particular printers still carry a one year warranty.

As always, I have no affiliation with any of these companies. Caveat
emptor.

All,

Upgrade of pmsheet is available for free:

Get it at http://home-5.worldonline.nl/~jdekeij/pmsheet.html

Please let me know what you think about it.

Jasper

---END FORWARDED MESSAGE---

"PMSHEET is a file explorer like program, showing at the left a directory
tree and at the right the images in the selected directory. The images are
shown as thumbnails. The size of the thumbnails can be varied in three
different sizes, small, medium and large. A very important property of the
program is that almost any action can be done by the keyboard thereby
minimizing the dependancy of the mouse. Each thumbnail uses a maximum of
10 kb. The program support the standard drag & drop of OS/2 Warp, even the
tree at the right accepts dropped files. This makes it easy to maintain
your image folders. On the images simple functions can be applied like
rotating, zooming and slideshow of sellected images etc. The program comes
with online help. Last but not least, it is freeware.
