12th Anniversary meeting
Saturday, September 17, 2005
9:30 AM - 1 PM

For directions, see: http://www.scoug.com/directions.html

Don't know how it happened, but its our 12th Anniversary already.

To celebrate, we are going to have more of our usual interesting meeting
topics, coffee and donuts. Then we are going to finish up with so extras.

The meeting is going to start of with a demo install (or two) of the eCS
1.2 Media Refresh. This is eCS version 1.2 with all the content updated
to the latest fix levels. There's even a several new features. The
Media Refresh installs easily on wide variety of systems than ever,
including the latest Athon64s. Installs over existing installations is
better supported than ever.

Next Greg will continue his porting to GCC project. With some luck, we
will see vim spring to life and edit a file or two.

Following the presentations, will be a Q&A session.

Finally, we will top this all off will a bit of celebrating. There will
be pizza and cake. Bring your appetite and bring your friends.

SW: BTTV Movie Recorder

2005-09-16

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: doconnorDESPAM@DESPAMreamined.on.ca

After try several different approaches, I have created a OS/2 program
designed capturing the video from BTTV for OS/2. BTTV is a port of the
Linux driver for BT8X8 TV-Cards. Unlike most OS/2 TV applications, it does
support NTSC.

Unfortunately the methods it uses are far from ideal. To capture video it
screen captures the video window of the BTTV TV application. It captures
audio from the line-in of your sound card, but it does not include it in
the AVI file, but stores it in a separate wav file.

However, since it captures from the screen, it could be used to capture
video off other applications.

It is distributed under the GPL and is written in Virtual Pascal.

For people that have abandoned the comp.os.os2.* Usenet groups because of
the psycho-troll that harasses everyone there, some good news.
comp.os.os2.announce and comp.os.os2.moderated are back in business. The
moderator had had ongoing posting problems and seems to have now corrected
those. So please feel free to come back Usenet if you want.

SW: SeaMonkey 1.0alpha released

2005-09-17

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: mozillaDESPAM@DESPAMWeilbacher.org posetd in
news://secnews.netscape.com/netscape.public.mozilla.os2

There is now an OS/2 release of the first alpha release of SeaMonkey, the
successor of the Mozilla suite. It is listed on
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/releases/ under contributed
builds. I hope there are not too many bugs that I didn't notice during
testing, but no guarantees... As there were no nightlies of the 1.8 branch
there were probably not too many people besides me who would have noticed
bugs.

If someone who has permissions could replace the old 1.8b release (which
nobody should be using any more) on http://www.mozilla.org/ports/os2/ with
the SeaMonkey alpha release?

Columba e-mail client 1.0 has been released. It is free, open-source Java
based client. It is capable of POP3 and real IMAP (like Mozilla,
Thunderbird, not like Polarbar).

It worked fine with Innotek Java 1.4.2, but seemed to not work with Golden
Code Java 1.4.1. Performance is not an issue (at least on a 1.6GHz
laptop), no noticeable sluggishness. Start as you would most other Java
apps like Art of Illusion, JAlbum, etc.

EVENT: PASUG Mtg: Thurs, Sep 22nd

From: "Larry Lavins"

.. PHILADELPHIA ALTERNATE SYSTEMS USER GROUP
.. http://www.pasug.org
The Philadelphia Alternate Systems User Group (PASUG) invites all
interested computer users to attend the September meeting. .
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd, 2005 7:00-10:00PM
.. Bryn Mawr Community Center, 9 S. Bryn Mawr Ave, Bryn Mawr,PA

*** THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd MEETING AGENDA ***
.. -- BeOS REINCARNATIONS: ZETA and HAIKU --

Welcome back to all. Hope everyone had an enjoyable summer.
We look forward to another year of interesting meetings.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that PASUG member Ben
Bowers plans to attend the September 22nd meeting, following
a rather lengthy convalescence. We wish him a continued return to a 100%
healthy condition. All PASUG members are urged to come on out to the
meeting Thursday evening to welcome Ben back on the road to full recovery
and renewed PASUG participation.

In addition to his support for OS/2, Ben has also been a long-
time fan of (the now defunct) BeOS which has been reincarnated as a
commercial operating system named ZETA being developed in Germany by
YellowTab Co. (www.yellowtab.com). Another parallel open source project
named HAIKU is under development by groups of volunteer programmers all
around the world.

At the September meeting, Ben will conduct a presentation and demo of ZETA
1.0, YellowTab's recent first commercial product release from the BeOS
family. We will examine how YellowTab's description of the ZETA 1.0
product compares to their claims, quoted as follows ....

"ZETA is a very fast operating system written from the ground
up to get more out of your hardware than any other. With a
true micro kernel is of only 640 KB and a 64-bit journalling
filesystem to make things fly. Never before was it so easy to
create MP3's or encode and decode videos. Never before was it
so easy to partition a hard drive or create CDs. Needless to
say, ZETA is also virus-free leaving you to concentrate on
getting things done.

Discover the TRUE power within your computer - install ZETA
today. It's the cheapest upgrade you'll ever do! Install ZETA
in just a few mouse clicks and be working in a matter of
minutes. And you don't even have to worry about your old
system and data - use the ZETA Bootmanager to install and
manage other operating systems."

Ben will also briefly discuss the status of the ongoing HAIKU open source
project, which is being redone. It's progressing steadily, but will
probably not be ready for release any time in the near future.

Other March agenda items include announcements, news & new
software releases, Q&A session, and possible 50/50 raffle.
Soft drinks, pretzels & chips will be available.

MEETING FORMAT & TIME SCHEDULE (Subject to change)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
.. 7:00 - 7:30 Meeting start, announcements, etc.
.. 7:30 - 8:30 ZETA/HAIKU presentation/demo
PASUG meetings are open and free for all users, their guests
and others interested in learning about OS/2, Linux & their
associated technologies. Please try to be on time promptly by 7:00pm to
avoid missing earlier parts of the meeting.
