SW: Mozilla's Firefox 2 Alpha2 Has Been Released

2006-05-24
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Sander Nyman <2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net>

Mozilla Firefox 2 ("Bon Echo") Alpha 2 has been released. This release is
NOT intended for typical Firefox users. While it is the next generation of
Firefox, it *IS* an early alpha version, and is available FOR TESTING
PURPOSES ONLY.

You can download it here:

http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/bonecho/alpha2/contrib/bonecho-alpha2-os2.zip

NOTE: This release requires the newer libc0.6.1 based version of the GCC
runtime library. Available here:

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.1-csd1.zip

NOTE: This release requires IPLUGINW.DLL to use the Java and Flash
plugins. The latest (backward compatible) version is available here:

http://e-vertise.com/warpzilla/ipluginw20050915.xpi
or here:
http://download.innotek.de/javaos2/mozilla/ipluginw20050915.xpi

IMPORTANT NOTE: To have both Firefox, & Thunderbird in use at the same
time (or ANY other Mozilla app) they *MUST* be at the SAME version level,
or a mismatched DLL will still be in memory when you attempt to start a
second Mozilla based program. The easiest way to get around this
limitation, and use DIFFERENT version levels of Firefox, Thunderbird, NVU,
etc., is with Rich Walsh's Run! utility. It is tiny, and VERY easy to set
up. To make life even easier, I HIGHLY recommend that you download & use
the Internet Application Integration utility from Chuck McKinnis, which
actually contains the Run! utility, and sets it up for you, along with
coordinating your web brower with your email client for "mailto" links,
etc. You can find it here:

http://www.7cities.net/%7Emckinnis/code/iai1010.exe

Or, if you'd rather do it yourself, here is the Run! utility:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/wps/run_060.zip

Firefox extensions (add-ons) that add new functionality are available
here:

https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=firefox

Firefox themes (skins) are available here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/themes/?application=firefox

SW: PHP updated, Battle for Wesnoth fix

2006-05-24
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Paul Smedley

Hi All,
I've made some updates at http://smedley.info/os2ports

Firstly, PHP 5.1.4 has been updated:
New in this build is:
Added more modules - now included are: bz2, curl, dbase, gd, exif,
filepro,, gd, gettext, mbstring, mysql, mysqli, openssl, pdo_mysql,
pdo_sqlite, pgsql (postgresql) & sqlite, and converted some modules that
were built into php5.dll to dynamically loaded modules.
Fixed problems with uploads being uploaded as ascii instead of binary.
Fixed mail() functionality using sendmail not working.

Secondly, a fix is available for The Battle for Wesnoth. This fix allows
the 'wesnoth' directory to be moved out of the root.

Cheers,

SW: Gendatam Suite Beta 2

2006-05-24
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From:Peter J Seymour

Web site: http://www.gendatam.com/

Gendatam Suite is a Family History application.

Beta version 2 of Gendatam Suite for OS/2 is now available at the website
http://www.gendatam.com/. Gendatam Suite uses its own data model while
providing support for the usual Gedcom format. The current Beta adds an
improved user interface, improved gedcom access and an optional macro
facility for data entry. Files of any size may be read.

The application is a Java program which has been pre-compiled for use on OS/2.
Running as native code makes the application generally quicker and more
responsive.

The application has its own look-and-feel. This provides a consistent
interface regardless of the host system.

OS/2 users may be interested in this application for a number of reasons:
- It is written in Java but packaged as an OS/2 native code program.
- It is a family history program available first on OS/2, but also to
be available on the Microsoft Windows NT/2000/XP series with data
compatibility between operating systems.

This beta will be of particular interest to those people who like to see
how well programs will read the various varieties of Gedcom files.

This current beta version expires at the end of August.

Feedback is welcome as noted on the website. Feedback is particularly
requested from OS/2 users (there were all of about 20 downloads for OS/2
beta 1).

A note to archive administrators: The version is a beta version which
incorporates an expiry date. There is no point in archiving it.

Regards
Peter

SW: SigmaMD5 ver 1.31 Released

2006-05-27
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From:"Keith"

A new version of SigmaMD5 has been released an uploaded to Hobbes. It is
currentlly in the /pub/incoming directory but should be moved to
/pub/os2/util/misc within he next few days or so.

Download: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/misc/sigmamd5v1.31.zip

SigmaMD5 is a PM MD5 checksum generator and checker. Is compatable with the
output of Linux GNU MD5SUM and can check the eCs CD's for correct data
using the MD5 checksum list files on the CD's. Provides a clear visual
indication of checksum status (error's etc.) as well as error sorting, file
filtering and comprehensive logging facilities

This version now supports the languages Dutch, English, German, Italian and
Swedish and shortly I hope Taiwanese Chinese. Help files (with the
exception of German) have also been translated and are automatically
selected depending on the language used by SigmaMD5.

There is also a 'floating line display' which shows the complete filename
of any truncated file name both in the File menu and the Results window.

The support of removable media has been improved to avoid potential lockups
plus various bugs have been resolved.

Keith Merrington

SW: GBM 1.40 + REXX, GBMV2 1.27, GBM File Dialog + REXX

2006-05-28
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Heiko Nitzsche

NEW: Windows 16/32 bpp RGB and BITFIELDS BMPs can now be read.

Notes for eComStation 1.2/1.2R users
------------------------------------
Please read the installation instructions. eCS 1.2/1.2R ships with an old
GBM.DLL (1.12) which prevents loading of the new GBM.DLL (1.40). Please
follow the instructions to use the new GBM.DLL for all programs as well as
for eCS WPS features like bitmap previews.

If you cannot replace the eCS shipped GBM.DLL, please execute unlock
x:\os2\dll\gbm.dll from a command line. Then override the old GBM.DLL with
the new one. Don't forget to reboot afterwards.

GBM.DLL 1.40 and GBM command line tools
---------------------------------------
(Public Domain)

The Generalised Bitmap Module (GBM) is a library capable of loading and
saving bitmap files in a variety of popular and less popular bitmap file
formats. Programs may be written to use this code, and thus be able to
access a variety of file formats without actually knowing what format the
pictures are in, or any details about file format itself.

In this version, extended BMP, PNG, TIF and PPM support is additionally
included. PNG and TIF support also 16, 32, 48, 64 bpp colour depths
with/without alpha channel. PPM supports also 48 bpp colour depth. BMP
supports also OS/2 RLE24 and Windows 16/32 bpp RGB and BITFIELDS formats.

It comes with a useful set of command line bitmap manipulation tools.

Get package gbmos2_140_bin.zip from Hobbes.
It is also included in the WarpIN installation package (see below).

Enhanced GBMV2 Version 1.27
---------------------------
(Public Domain)

GBMV2 is a fast and simple bitmap viewer and editor for the OS/2 and eCS
Presentation Manager.

Enhanced release of the GBMV2-Viewer from the GBMOS2PM package:
* An English and a German version of GBMV2 is included.
* An English and a German version of the GBM file dialog is included.

GBMDLG.DLL has been extended by:
* Bitmap preview within the file dialog
* Redesign to fit eComStation file dialog style

Several extensions for keyboard shortcuts have been added. Both parts got
new resources that better fit to the Warp 4 and eComStation look & feel.
Resources for fonts 8.Helv and 9.WarpSans for both, German and English are
available in the sources package.

Get package gbmos2pm127_bin.zip from Hobbes.
It is also included in the WarpIN installation package (see below).

GBM.DLL REXX adapter library (GBMRX 1.0)
----------------------------------------
(Public Domain)

GBMRX.DLL is a REXX adapter DLL for OS/2 and eComStation which
REXX programs may use to load or save all bitmap file formats supported by
the GBM.DLL (to/from a file).

Almost full feature set of GBM.DLL is provided by the REXX API.
I/O remapping is not supported due to language restrictions.

Get package gbmos2rx101_bin.zip from Hobbes.
It is also included in the WarpIN installation package (see below).

GBM File Dialog REXX adapter library (GBMDLGRX 1.01)
----------------------------------------------------
(Public Domain)

The REXX adapter DLL allows REXX programmers to use the GBM File Dialog in
their programs. It requires availability of GBM.DLL and the GBM File Dialog
DLLs (GBMDLG.DLL and GBMDLG.HLP).

Get package gbmos2rx101_bin.zip from Hobbes.
It is also included in the WarpIN installation package (see below).

The new homepage of GBM for OS/2 and eCS
----------------------------------------
http://heikon.home.tlink.de

It provides:
- reworked documentation (now also included in the download archives)
- developer tutorials on how to use GBM libs in your own programs
- download of all sources and binaries

What's new compared to GBM.DLL 1.39, GBMV2 1.26
-----------------------------------------------

GBM.DLL:
* NEW: Windows 16/32 bpp RGB and BITFIELDS BMP formats can now be read
* Fix the strange handling of 1bpp bitmaps. Now the colour
palette is honored just as in all other formats.
* A few internal gbm core changes.

GBM command line tools:
* gbmhdr:
- Dynamically load GBM.DLL for querying image page count
to allow it to run also with older GBM.DLL versions.
The previous version didn't work on eComStation 1.2/1.2R
because eCS ships with an old GBM.DLL (1.12) which is
incompatible (missing interfaces).

GBMV and GBMV2:
* they got new program icons (created by David Graser)
* Fix display of 1bpp color bitmap for which no RGB color
table was created and thus only the closest pure color
was used. This caused wrong colors in display but had
no effect on bitmap operations.
* Fix makefile issue with English IPFC country code. It's now 001.

GBM File Dialog
* Fix preview of 1bpp bitmaps
* Updated online help to reflect newly supported BMP formats
* Fix makefile issue with English IPFC country code. It's now 001.

For more details please have a look at the change log in the included
documentation or at my GBM homepage (see above).

SW: New ScummVM build available!

2006-05-30
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Paul Smedley

Hi All,

I've just uploaded a new build of ScummVM to OS/2 World. No time to link
it to my site right now, so currently it's available from
http://www.os2world.com/smedley/scummvm-20060530-svn-os2.zip

This build of ScummVM is based on code from the svn repository. ScummVM
v0.9.0 will be released in a few weeks, so the intention is to get a fresh
OS/2 build out to see if there are any OS specific issues.

All feedback is appreciated, bugs should be reported via
http://mantis.smedley.info

ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical
point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data
files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables
shipped with the game, allowing you to play them on systems for which they
were never designed!

Thanks!

From: Chris Roossien (roossiendDESPAM@DESPAMgmail.com)

"DOSBox is a DOS-emulator portable (and ported) to many platforms. A port
was made feasible by the implementation of SDL on OS/2. For more
infomation, visit the homepage of DOSBox. Since DOSBox/2 is a regular OS/2
application, there is no need to have DOS-based drivers for video and sound
support - everything is passed through and handled by OS/2."

Com (serial) part rewritten for DosBox 0.65.
Help/inf files updated.
Added ioctl, aspi, usecd in mount.
Double click in the mount windows puts the values.
Small bug fixed.

(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Federally owned Banco do Brasil
has completed the migration of all its Windows XP computers to the
OpenOffice.org open source suite, reported local tech service Computerworld.

The migration involved 35,000 PCs, and Banco do Brasil now aims to migrate
another 30,000 computers that use the OS/2 operating system. These should
all migrate to the OpenOffice.org system by year-end..."

I assume that means they are going to be running OpenOffice.Org on the OS/2
machines since it also appears from the article that they only migrated the
office suite and not the platforms. Also just interesting to see that at
least someone still has a large OS/2 installation.
