SW: Lucide 1.0 RC1 available to eComStation customers

2007-01-24
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Joachim Benjamins

[Moderator note: For anyone having problems getting this version of Lucide
to run, note the requirement for UCLIP to be installed. ]

Serenity Systems International and netlabs.org today released RC1 of Lucide
1.0, a document viewer for eComStation designed as a replacement for
Acrobat Reader.

One goal of Lucide is to have a fast document viewer which is well
integrated in the eComStation WPS and supports features like drag and drop
and printing and which makes as easy as possible to work with PDF and other
files on eComStation.

Important note: Lucide now requires the UniClip package
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=UClip
Lucide will not start without installed UniClip!

UniClip is designed to allow OS/2 programs to exchange unicode text using
the clipboard with other native programs or with odin-ized programs. It is
compiled using Odin source code, so it shares the same clipboard formats
recognized in win32 native programs.

Changes since the previous Lucide beta release:

- Ask for password, if document is password-protected.
- Support for Pipe commands.
- 'New window' menuitem.
- Writes into EA thumbnail of first page of document (for eSchemes
Deluxe).
- Added 'print to file' option for postscript output.
- Remember last selected printer during session (closed ticket #96).
- Copy unicode text to clipboard in OpenOffice.org compatible format.
- Optimized unicode conversion, fixes crash in uconv.dll (closed
ticket #97).
- Speedup for 'As Image' printing, fixed crash (closed ticket #94).
- Odd/Even printing for 'As Image' printing.
- Plugin API extension: extended error reporting.
- PDF plugin: freetype library updated to release 2.3.0 (closed ticket
#76).
- DJVU plugin: handle document load errors.
- Added NLS-files: Italian, Czech, Russian.
- Updated NLS-files: Spanish, German, French.

All registered eComStation customers can download Lucide 1.0 RC1 (as zip or
WarpIn file) from the the eComStation Betazone, after login at:

http://www.ecomstation.com/

If you find any bugs please report them to the Netlabs tracking system:

http://svn.netlabs.org/lucide/

If you want to provide some more plugins for Lucide you will find the
sample source code on this page as well. The package also contains all
GPLed parts of the source code.

Heiko Nitzsche published 3rd party plugins for Lucide, based on GBM.
They are available from his homepage at: http://heikon.home.tlink.de/

Support for Lucide is available on the Lucide mailinglist, you will find
details at:

http://svn.netlabs.org/lucide/

If you don't have access to the wiki, you need to request it to Adrian
Gschwend - ktk netlabs.org -

If by any chance Adrian takes some time to give you an account (Since he is
very busy on this days), go ahead and post your config.sys command on this
OS2World.com forum thread, and I will put it on the wiki.

SW: testcase UNIAUD driver on netlabs.org

2007-01-29
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Mark Dodel

Website: http://uniaud.netlabs.org

"UNIAUD is a generic OS/2 MMPM audio driver that supports the vast majority
of audio hardware.
Based on the Linux ALSA project, it is designed to address the needs of
enterprises and SoHo/Endusers running the IBM OS/2 platform. Its
sophisticated architecture minimizes development effort for the support of
new audio hardware and ensures both high quality and current OS/2 support
without the amount of work normally involved in creating an OS/2 audio
device driver."

There is an update to the UNIAUD driver on Netlabs' FTP server:

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/uniaud/uniaud_28012007_testcase.zip

Note that this is labelled a "testcase" so use it with care. It does work
fine on my Thinkpad T42p.

From the changes file in this testcase archive:

"NOTE: UNIAUD API requires new LIBC from GCC get it from
ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.1-csd1.zip

28.01.2007
- Latest HDA code
- Fixed DART sharing problems with UNIAUD API
- A lot of other ALSA updates"

SW: netlabs.org has a new web server!

2007-01-29
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Adrian Gschwend

Dear community,

Today we physically replaced the old netlabs.org web server by the new,
much more powerful one! While there was much work done already, not
everything is finished yet. Please give me some time now to finish the
migration, I will try my very best to make sure all the information are
back online as soon as possible and hopefully even more soon.

Again, I would like to say a big "thank you!" to everyone that contributed
to the new server!

Changes:

- new site layout! You just get an impression right now, much more to
come :-) I *know* it is broken for now so don't report that ;) It is just
*very* basic right now.
- most links have a different structure now. While the sub domains like
warpin.netlabs.org still work I have to add some redirects for links &
downloads etc.
- new XML/XSLT based CMS (thanks a lot to Arne Blankerts for his fCMS!,
see www.fcms.de for more information, it rocks!). It's blazing fast :)
- the FTP server is case sensitive now
- all FTP users are gone, I will migrate them as soon as possible.
Anonymous user works for sure
- Subversion & TRAC is running on the new server now, it is much faster :-)
- CVS moved away already some days ago, now at cvs.netlabs.org. Snapshots
of the old projects are available at ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/snapshots
- IRC points to irc.aroa.ch for now, will change (see below)

To be moved within the next few days:
- wiki.netlabs.org
- www.edm2.com

You will notice when this is done because the pages will react much faster ;)

Server:

After years of running the web server on OS/2 I decided to move to FreeBSD
as a server OS for various reasons which I would like to explain because
some people do not seem to understand that:

- My daytime job is administrating servers, most servers I run are
FreeBSD so I know this OS pretty well
- netlabs.org provides mainly software for the desktop. I prefer to
invest time in organizing netlabs.org itself than debugging issues on the
server just because most of the software I run on the server are made for
Unix (TRAC, Subversion, Apache...) and might not work on OS/2 that easy
- I do much more on this server than just providing basic services like a
little bit of PHP & MySQL. We use quite a bunch of software on this server,
see http://wiki.netlabs.org/index.php/R2-d2 if you are interested in the
details
- FreeBSD works just fine on this dualcore AMD CPU and because the server
is in Hamburg (Germany) and I live in Biel (Switzerland) I didn't feel like
experimenting on new hardware
- we simply have much more important things to discuss than the OS of
netlabs.org. Talk about Voyager for example! :-)

Unfortunately the admin of the eCS Network refuses to accept any servers in
the IRC network which are not running OS/2 so I am not allowed to connect
to that network anymore. While I find that very narrow-minded I have to
accept that and move the IRC network. In the next days I will most probably
join another existing network and #netlabs will move to that network as
well. I will announce that for sure. For now irc.netlabs.org points to
irc.aroa.ch. I would have preferred to stay on eCS Network because that's
where we belong...

so far, I'm sure I forgot some things but I will inform again in a few days
or so.

Thanks again to Arne for his friendly support with fCMS, the new hardware
(thanks for the reinstall ;) and finally changing the server itself :-) I
will also bug him the next weeks till the web pages look the way I want it.
Also thanks to n@work which still provides a very fast Internet connection!
With the new server you should be able to notice it :-)

cu

Adrian
