Net: ERACC is Moving to eCommerce using osCommerce

2007-08-27
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Gene Alexander

Hello Friends,

After a long time using static HTML pages and handling all orders via a web
form I finally decided to move us to an eCommerce package. Mainly this is
to streamline our order process. Since the majority of our orders are from
eComStation customers I am notifying this list first. The very first
products I put on the site are eComStation products. If you are in the
market for an eCS preloaded PC or an upgrade for your OS/2 or eCS system
please give our new eStorefront a look.

http://shopping.eracc.com/catalog/

Note that I am still learning the osCommerce software so if you notice a
problem when trying to place an order or when viewing the site *please*
e-mail me and let me know. I will fix any problems as soon as I can. Those
of you that have ordered from us in the past - thank you. We look forward
to serving the eCS community for as long as there is interest in eCS.

Sincerely,
Gene Alexander

SW: New CUPS 1.30 for OS/2 & eComStation build released

2007-08-28
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Paul Smedley

Hi All,

A new package for using CUPS on OS/2 & eComStation is now available from
http://svn.netlabs.org/ecups/wiki/CupsPort

Download:
http://download.smedley.info/cups-1.3.0-espgs-8.15.4-gutenprint-5.1.3-os2-20070827.zip

New in this release:
1) Updated CUPS to v1.3.0
2) Fixed a Gutenprint bug that stopped the last xx bytes of output being
sent to the backend daemon, and on some printers left the print job 'stuck'
and the busy light flashing.

Note that it currently isn't straightforward to setup CUPS to be able to
print from OS/2 applications, and currently it is only possible to print to
printers connected using either the LPD or IPP protocols using CUPS.

However - USB connected printers can be printed to using LPD, if the OS/2
LPD daemon is started.

For example, if you have a USB connected printer with Physical Name
EpsonSty, and you start lpd.exe with 'start /min lpd -c -b' your USB
connected printer can be printed to lpd://localhost/EpsonSty

Even if you have a USB printer that has current OS/2 printer drivers - I'd
_REALLY_ appreciate feedback - CUPS is our BEST (and probably ONLY) chance
to get printer drivers for MODERN printers.

There is a eCups mailing list at Netlabs which can be viewed via Gmane at
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.org.netlabs.ecups.devel

Please, please post feedback. A list of printers that Gutenprint supports
can be found at http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php3

Further details on using CUPS on OS/2 or eComStation can be found at
http://svn.netlabs.org/ecups or in the readme.os2 file in the download package.

Thanks,

Paul.

Net: OS2 World.Com: Do we need to care about OOXML?

2007-08-29
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Kim Haverblad

I guess that some of you have noticed the circus regarding how the vote of
OOXML was bought by Microsoft by rounding up Gold Partners here in Sweden.

The question that some might have been asking is if we really need to care
about this? Then ask yourself, do you think that Microsoft will release
tools for all available OS on the market to make a proper implementation of
OOXML?

Also another question to be asked if Microsoft really wants to make the
implementation of OOXML in good faith; why are they then making sure to win
the vote to what ever price it takes?

Another issue is that quite a few countries are looking at Sweden as a
neutral and objective country when it comes to this question and as we now
know; sadly we are not.

To give a few more lines to read:

Microsoft Bought Sweden's ISO Vote on OOXML?
http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/08/28/1237255

Microsoft buys the Swedish vote on OOXML

Microsoft forced partners to vote Yes!
http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14868/2/

What Happened in Germany
http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20070824123112581

Well, what can you do to make sure that you country place an objective vote
without Microsoft doing the same trick once again? Well, since Microsoft
was caught with the hand in the jam can - make sure that your local press
gets the story.

Sincerely Yours,
Kim Haverblad

Net: OS2 World.Com: The Swedish OOXML vote as been declared invalid!

2007-08-30
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: kimhDESPAM@DESPAMos2world.com

Hello Everybody!

The Swedish Standards Institute has tonight issued a press release where
they declared this weeks earlier vote regarding OOXML as invalid and by
that Sweden don't have any official position regarding OOXML any more.

According to the press release issued by SIS tonight (the pdf document is
created 18:05) the SIS board has declared this weeks earlier OOXML vote as
invalid due to that one of the participating companies has voted two times
where the SIS rules clearly says that each company can only cast one vote each.

SW: eComStation 2.0 RC2 available

2007-08-31
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Joachim Benjamins

Serenity Systems International and Mensys BV are pleased to announce the
immediate availability of eComStation 2.0 RC2.

This release is available to customers with an active Software
Subscriptions Services subcription. It adds a few new features and contains
a lot of updated drivers and fixes.

More details can be found at http://www.ecomstation.com/subscription/

== BACKUP ==

As always, the following applies:

!!! WHEN TESTING BETA SOFTWARE, ALWAYS BE SURE TO HAVE A TRIED AND TESTED
BACKUP OF YOUR SYSTEM !!!

** Netware installation **

This version of eComStation allows the installation of the Netware client
software and utilities straight from the regular installer. It is
integrated in the network pages and makes it easier to setup eComStation as
a workstation in a Netware environment.

** Disk Resizer GUI **

This beta has a custom DFSee engine that enables reliable RESIZING of FAT32
and NTFS filesystems to allow shrinking an existing Windows installation to
make room for eComStation on the same system.

The GUI to this tool has been updated and is now using a graphical
interface. To invoke it, please select 'Paritition Resizing Tool' from the
Installation Volume Manager which can be called during installation.

** GenMac support **

This package provides generic driver support for several network interface
cards under OS/2 and eComStation. Moreover, Genmac is enabled to support
WPA encryption with the Wireless LAN Monitor 3.x or better.

Genmac and the Wireless LAN monitor will be installed when the appropriate
hardware is detected by the installer. If it is not detected, you can
manually select the driver in the network installation dialog.

** Bootable JFS **

This release of eComStation contains the option to install the operating
system on a JFS volume. The advantage of doing this is that the amount of
diskcache is only limited by system memory (typically 10% of available
memory is assigned) This increased cache size gives a huge gain in overall
system performance.

To install onto a Bootable JFS volume, you will have to select 'JFS' as
filesystem type in the 'Format Volume' page of the installer.

** ACPI 3.01 **

ACPI support has been updated to the latest available version (3.01) which
results in varying success rate. For example, AMD Opteron multicore CPU is
now reported to be supported.

Installation of ACPI has been improved by the use of the ACPI Wizard, which
tries to determine system configuration and set parameters accordingly. You
can manually change them of course. It will be run after regular
installation has completed.

** multicore CPU support **

This beta supports the installation of eComStation on a MultiCore CPU
computer. This includes Intel Core Duo, Core2 Duo and AMD 64 X2. To enable
it, you can do so in the ACPI Wizard that is launched from the Post
Installation tasks at the end of the installation. Alternatively you can
start the ACPI Wizard at any time from the install/remove folder in the
Local System folder on the desktop.

** eComStation Virtual File System (Samba client support) **

Samba is a SMB/CIFS protocols file and print sharing server/client set
originally made for UNIX world to cooperate with corresponding Windows and
OS/2 servers or clients. eComStation has a native implementation of
SMB/CIFS server/client set - IBM LAN Manager and IBM Peer. These products
have not been recently updated and may have some compatibility issues with
modern Windows SMB/CIFS implementations.

Serenity Systems International has reached an agreement with Blueprint
Software Works for the inclusion of the 'eComStation Virtual File System'
driver which provides support for Samba Client. Currently a GUI to
configure it is lacking, but an example of how to mount a Samba resource is
available.

== REPORTING ==

To tell us your findings, please create a report at:

http://www.ecomstation.com/support/rc2report/

You are also welcome to join the TestTeam if you want to discuss this beta
and future developments. See http://ewiki.ecomstation.nl/TestTeam for more
details.

== SOFTWARE SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES ==

Please note that although some subscriptions have expired by now, you are
not required to purchase a renewal to obtain the GA version of eComStation
2.0. If you want to try this RC2 release however, you are encouraged to
renew your Software Subscription Services contract.

More details can be found at http://www.ecomstation.com/subscription/

Enjoy!
