SW: Uniaud 1.2 .0beta1 *** Experimental release. ***

2007-10-08
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Mark Dodel

"the Universal Audio Driver for eCS and OS/2."

UNIAUD32 1.2.0beta1 aka "ReSync 0.9.5"

This is an experimental test release of a Resync of ALSA 0.9.5 in UniAud.
It is only the uniaud32.sys driver. You must already have a recent UniAud
release installed to use this. Though I found this release works fine on
my Thinkpad T42p, please heed the warning below.

"WARNING

These 1.2.0 beta releases should be treated with the caution due to any
experimental/unstable software. They should not be used on a production
system without proper system backups. Always keep a bootable CD handy for
reverting to a more stable release of Uniaud32.sys in case this one should
trap."

SW: DFSee 9.02 released today

2007-10-11
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Jan van Wijk

DFSee version 9.02 has been released today

It fixes a few rather minor bugs, and adds a menu item to clear the unused
sectors in the first track of a disk. More important for me, it can now
generate static-HTML documentation for its menu-system :-)

Although not all screen-shots have been added yet, you can download the
results from the DFSee website:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfsmenu-html.zip

DFSee is a very powerful disk-utility with disk partitioning, filesystem
and disk analysis, file recovery, UNDELETE for HPFS JFS, and NTFS, resizing
and smart imaging or cloning.

More details at:
http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/

Or from the HOBBES website:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/dfsee902.zip
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=dfsee

Most important functional changes since 9.01:

SW: whois v4.7.23 - Command line WHOIS client.

2007-10-14
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Ian Manners

Hi everyone,

Long overdue whois.exe update for OS/2 - eComStation.

What is a whois client ?

It's a utility for checking domains and IP address's in various whois
databases on the internet.
Type 'whois -h' for help/summary from the command line.

Requires OS/2 v4.xx or eComStation v1.x or higher, and libc063.dll
Might work on earlier versions of OS/2 but not tested.

Replaces whois-4.6.6-os2.zip.

Programmer is Marco d'Itri - http://www.linux.it/~md/software/
Compiled for OS/2 by Ian Manners.

Filename: whois-4.7.23.zip includes source and binary.

Can be found at hobbes
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?sh=1&button=Search&key=whois-4.7.23.zip

or at OS/2 Site - http://www.os2site.com/sw/internet/util/

Cheers

SW: ACPI 3.03, suspend/resume, QuadCore

2007-10-14
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Eugene Gorbunoff

"ACPI (short for "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface") is a
standard that defines power and configuration management interfaces
between an operating system and Hardware. It is meant to supersede
the older APM standard (for power management) and provide a generic
interface for recognition and configuration of hardware devices."

Now testing:
* suspend/resume on multi-core notebooks and barebones (Read APM.doc)
* support of QuadCore desktops (follow standard recommendations:
ACPI-SMP.doc), Please inform us, does it work well or not.

How to achieve success in testing?
* update danis506.add to 1.8.1 (How to update Danis -- Software updates
-- http://ecomstation.ru/apecs.php?action=item&id=203
* disable all device drivers before testing suspend/resume (USB, audio,
network)
* You can see the list of Sleep states supported by your computer when
starting ACPI daemon (S1 - computer is stopped; S2 - computer is stopped,
part of devices are powered off; S3 - all devices are powered off, except
memory; S4 - all devices are powered off; S5 - power off)
* Post the bug-report (ticket) to the tracker --
http://svn.netlabs.org/acpi/newticket (login: guest, pass: netlabs)
View tickets -- http://svn.netlabs.org/acpi/report/1

How to post good ticket?
* From: your name or nickname
* Title: model of notebook/motherboard/SMP, problem in 3-5 words
* if you have troubles then grab log: copy acpica$ acpi.log
* if you see trap then read ACPI-Tester.doc

How to help to other users? Share the results of your tests.
* Post report about your computer/motherboard to Hardware database --
http://ecomstation.ru/hardware.php
* Install ACPIFU WPI (Fast Upgrade) if 3.x is working fine on your computer.

Net: Sad news from Sundial

2007-10-14
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Cees van Veelen

As a customer of Sundial Systems and user of Junkspy I received the
following sad news:

"On October 5th, Sundial Systems suddenly and unexpectedly lost its
President and chief developer, Randell Flint. Randell was the heart and
soul of Sundial, and we are mourning his untimely passing."

This information is confirmed by the website of the company.
http://www.sundialsystems.com/

I think the OS/2 community lost a valuable member.

Greetings, Cees van Veelen.

[Moderator note; This is truly sad news. Besides being a developer of many
great OS/2 applications, Randell was a long time supporter of many OS/2
organizations and was very supportive of VOICE and Warpstock. He will be
greatly missed.]
