Event: Warpstock Europe 2008 Announcement

2008-04-16
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Christian Hennecke

Team OS/2 Deutschland e.V. and warpevents.eu are pleased to announce that
WARPSTOCK EUROPE 2008 will be held at the City Hostel Düsseldorf, Germany
on November 14-16, 2008. For more information, visit the Warpstock Europe
web site at:

http://www.warpstock.eu

Warpstock is an annual conference for the OS/2 and eComStation operating
systems and related technology. It is dedicated to information, education,
support, and exchange and addresses users, developers, and software
vendors. To achieve these goals, the event offers seminars and workshops,
exhibition areas, and room for personal exchange.

Warpstock conferences are held in different parts of the world. The
originating event is targeted at the users of the United States of America
and Canada, while the Warpstock Europe event obviously is its European
counterpart. Also, there is the Warpstock Czech Repuplic, which dedicated
to the community within the Czech Republic and countries of Eastern Europe.

OS/2 and eComStation users from Europe--and anywhere else for that
matter--are invited to come to Germany this year to attend Warpstock Europe
2008. The Event Team has many ideas on what to offer during this three day
OS/2-fest.

Warpstock Europe 2008 will be an excellent opportunity to attend
high-quality presentations about a variety of OS/2- and eComStation-related
subjects, exchange ideas with other developers, meet the people behind
projects, get support from user groups, and talk to other users.

Located in the heart of Western Europe near the Dutch border, Düsseldorf is
at a convenient traveling distance for people coming from Germany, the
Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France. Attendees flying in from other
countries will arrive at Düsseldorf International Airport, which is only 10
km away from the event location. The distance to the railway station
Düsseldorf Main Station is 5 km. Public transport to the event location is
available.

Following a complete refurbishment, Düsseldorf now boasts the most modern
youth hostel in Europe. The City Hostel offers 96 sunny and stylish rooms,
all with ensuite shower and toilet facilites, and 386 beds. The
innovatively designed building also houses a very popular bistro and
outdoor terrace--the perfect place to unwind after a busy day in this
exciting city! Four conference rooms will host sessions, workshops, and the
exhibition area, while a restaurant takes care of the physical well-being.
The hostel is located directly at the left bank of the river Rhine opposite
the famous historic city centre, making it a perfect starting point for
everybody who wants to extend his visit beyond the duration of the event
itself and avail themselves to the opportunity of a broad range of cultural
offerings.

Behind the organisation of Warpstock Europe 2008 is an international group
of OS/2 users, lead by Wolfgang Wilms, chairman of organiser Team OS/2
Deutschland e.V., and Christian Langanke, chairman of the supporting Team
OS/2 Ruhr e.V. Both have vast experience in running such events as they
already created Warpstock Europe 1999 in Bochum and Warpstock Europe 2000
in Karlsruhe, and provided support for other events. This event will again
benefit from the support of warpevents.eu, an organisation with the goal of
enabling others to create OS/2-related events by providing information
about event organisation, a communication and coordination center, and the
means for running event web sites as well.

SW: FAT32 0.9.12

2008-04-16
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Mark Dodel

FAT32 0.9.12 is now available on the Netlabs.org FTP server.

Web site: http://fat32.netlabs.org

"This project is based on the original FAT32 sourcecode by Henk Kelder.
He released the source to netlabs.org in January 2002 because he no longer
had the time to continue work on it. The present release comes in both WPI
and ZIP formats. If you want the original package done by Henk, look for it
at Hobbes, for example. The present code is compiled by KO Myung-Hun. "

Zip archive: ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/fat32/fat32_0912.zip
WarpIn archive: ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/fat32/fat32_0912.wpi

FAT32 User support group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fat32user

Please read the extensive FAT32.TXT file included in the archive for more
information. The changes for this version are listed in this file

"Version 0.9.12:

-Fixed the problem that CACHEF32 is crashed after calling CHKDSK for dirty
volume.
-Fixed the problem the regonition of USB removable media takes very long time
when inserting it since 0.9.11.
This is because FAT32 always calculates free space on mount. Now, FAT32
calculates free space only if /CALCFREE specified or free space info was not
stored on disk.
-Fixed the trap when removing USB removable media without eject.
-Improved Read/Write performance. By Lars.

*** Known Problems ***

-When using USB removable media with other OS such as Windows, free space can
be incorrect. At this time, you should use 'chkdsk' to correct it or
'/CALCFREE' to avoid it."

SW: Alpine 1.10 and webmail

2008-04-17
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Nicholas Sheppard

This is to announce that Alpine v1.10 is now available for OS/2 and
eComStation, along with the corresponding versions of the University of
Washington's POP3 and IMAP servers.

This release includes fixes for several bugs in the OS/2 versions of Alpine
and Pico, in additon to changes made by the University of Washington that
you can read about according to the announcement forwarded below.

I'm also interested in whether or not there is any interest in a web mail
server for OS/2 and eComStation. The Alpine source code includes a webmail
server ("Web Alpine") that I have not yet attempted to port, but if there's
interest I can try it. I can't guarantee it'll work but who knows.

You can find further information at:

http://www.zeta.org.au/~nps/software/alpine/en/index.html

"Alpine is a revised version of Pine, a well-known and well-loved
text-based e-mail client developed by the University of Washington, USA. It
can access mail from POP3 and IMAP mail servers, as well as act as a client
for NNTP news servers. The package also includes the simple text editor
Pico and file browser Pilot, along with some small utilities for managing
mail stored on IMAP servers."

SW: Firefox 2.0.0.14 (Official) Has Been Released

2008-04-18
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Sander Nyman <2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net>

Michael Kaply has released Mozilla's Firefox 2.0.0.14 (Official) for OS/2.
This is a security release to address bug MFSA 2008-20 (Crash in
JavaScript garbage collector) which was rated critical.

You can download it here:

http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0.0.14/contrib/firefox-2.0.0.14.en-US.os2.zip

NOTE: This release requires the C runtime DLLs from Innotek. Version
0.5.1 includes an installer. Available here:

http://download.innotek.de/gccos2/runtime/libc-0.5.1.exe

NOTE: This release requires IPLUGINW.DLL to use the Java and Flash
plugins. Available here:

http://e-vertise.com/warpzilla/ipluginw20050915.xpi
or here:
http://download.innotek.de/javaos2/mozilla/ipluginw20050915.xpi

NOTE: To have both Firefox, & Thunderbird in use at the same time (or ANY
other Mozilla app) they *MUST* be at the SAME version level, or a
mismatched DLL will still be in memory when you attempt to start a second
Mozilla based program. The easiest way to get around this limitation, and
use DIFFERENT version levels of Firefox, Thunderbird, Kompozer, etc., is
with Rich Walsh's Run! utility. It is tiny, and VERY easy to set up. To
make life even easier, I HIGHLY recommend that you download & use the
Internet Application Integration utility from Chuck McKinnis, which
actually contains the Run! utility, and sets it up for you, along with
coordinating your web browser with your email client for "mailto" links,
etc. You can find it here:

http://7cities.net/~mckinnis/code/iai1050.exe

Or, if you'd rather do it yourself, here is the Run! utility:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=run_070.zip

Firefox extensions (add-ons) that add new functionality are available here:

https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=firefox

Firefox themes (skins) are available here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/themes/?application=firefox
